El procedimiento metodológico basado en el enfoque participativo comprendió tres fases, desarrolladas en el segundo semestre de 2012. El proceso permitió evidenciar los cambios que ha tenido la agricultura en el municipio de Subachoque a lo largo de siete décadas y caracterizar la agricultura actual. Una adecuada planificación del uso del territorio debe privilegiar la conservación de áreas naturales estratégicas y promover la agroecología para la producción agropecuaria conservacionista, tal como lo plantea la Red Agroecológica Campesina.

The adoption of agroecological practices such as consortium and agroforestry systems are effective in improving and maintaining soil quality, with the delimitation of factors that may be related to the preservation of soil fertility being essential. The indicators of sustainability of participative soils are characterized by their ease of application, which can be used by farmers themselves and contributing to improvements in family farming production systems. The objective was to quantify the levels of resilience and diversity in the different agroecosystems located in the Serraria, PB County. The studied agroecosystems had three contortium, three monocultures and three areas in transition to an agroforestry system. For the study, the Participative Rural Diagnosis was used as a tool combined with the method of attributing scores applied to social, economic and sustainable indicators. In not all systems, soluble chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used in their management, being the model of family production. From the analysis, it can be concluded that in small monoculture areas it is possible to guarantee a certain level of resilience of the agroecosystem when worked in a manner in keeping with the principles of management and conservation.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre as perspectivas de futuro dos jovens do Projeto Jaíba, localizado no município de Mocambinho – MG. Procurou- se analisar os aspectos relevantes da vida das novas gerações rurais, a repercussão do processo de êxodo rural, principalmente entre as mulheres, e a conseqüente masculinização da juventude, uma vez que alguns aspectos da vida rural no Jaíba não oferecem atrativos e condições de sobrevivência condizentes com as expectativas dos jovens entrevistados. Através de um roteiro de entrevistas, aplicado individualmente aos jovens, foram coletadas informações e opiniões de 31 jovens de ambos os sexos, residentes em áreas distintas do Projeto. Os dados mostram jovens com bom índice de escolaridade e baixa renda, convivendo no seio familiar, e com projetos de vida, em sua maioria, completamente desvinculados da agricultura. As informações obtidas permitem observar uma baixa expectativa quanto à vida no meio rural do Jaíba e uma profunda insatisfação diante da realidade do campo, trazendo implicações para o futuro dos jovens que vivem no Projeto Jaíba.

Conducting botanical and ecological explorations with the objective of studying the floristic composition of post-fire communities in the Aysén Region, we found new regional records of the fern Botrychium dusenii (H. Christ.) Alston (Ophioglossaceae). These findings, that extend the north limit of the species distribution, occurred in open areas affected by historical human-provoked fires (happening between 1950 and 1960) during the regional process of colonization.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only had a significant and catastrophic effect on business and economies globally, but has identified the external and internal enablement of new venture creation. This paper aims to provide entrepreneurship insights, implementations and dynamics to demonstrate the role of entrepreneurship in times of such adversity within an Australian context. We provide emergent enquiry narratives from leading Australian scholars, identifying entrepreneurial initiatives as a catalyst to new venture creation and growth. Narratives include insights associated with the entrepreneurial mindset, the multidimensional effects of resilience and entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurship enablers and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Opportunities for further research are identified, particularly regarding context and empirical outcomes. We postulate that entrepreneurship may well be the unsung hero during the current COVID-19 economic crisis.

In the last few years, all countries worldwide have fought the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) by exploiting Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to perform contact tracing. In parallel, the pandemic has highlighted the relevance of mobility and social distancing among citizens. The monitoring of such aspects appeared prominent for reactive decision-making and the effective tracking of the infection chain. In parallel to the proximity sensing among people, indeed, the concept of social distancing has captured the attention to signal processing algorithms enabling short-to-medium range distance estimation to provide behavioral models in the emergency. By exploiting the availability of smart devices, the synergy between mobile network connectivity and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), cooperative ranging approaches allow computing inter-personal distance measurements in outdoor environments through the exchange of light-weight navigation data among interconnected users. In this paper, a model for Inter-Agent Ranging (IAR) is provided and experimentally assessed to offer a naive collaborative distancing technique that leverages these features. Although the technique provides distance information, it does not imply the disclosure of the user’s locations being intrinsically prone to protect sensitive user data. A statistical error model is presented and validated through synthetic simulations and real, on-field experiments to support implementation in GNSS-equipped mobile devices. Accuracy and precision of IAR measurements are compared to other consolidated GNSS-based techniques showing comparable performance at lower complexity and computational effort.

Infection by SARS-CoV-2 in domestic animals has been related to close contact with humans diagnosed with COVID-19. Objectives: To assess the exposure, infection, and persistence by SARS-CoV-2 of dogs and cats living in the same households of humans that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and to investigate clinical and laboratory alterations associated with animal infection. Animals living with COVID-19 patients were longitudinally followed and had nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal and rectal swabs collected and tested for SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, blood samples were collected for laboratory analysis, and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT90) to investigate specific SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Between May and October 2020, 39 pets (29 dogs and 10 cats) of 21 patients were investigated. Nine dogs (31%) and four cats (40%) from 10 (47.6%) households were infected with or seropositive for SARS-CoV-2. Animals tested positive from 11 to 51 days after the human index COVID-19 case onset of symptoms. Three dogs tested positive twice within 14, 30, and 31 days apart. SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies were detected in one dog (3.4%) and two cats (20%). In this study, six out of thirteen animals either infected with or seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 have developed mild but reversible signs of the disease. Using logistic regression analysis, neutering, and sharing bed with the ill owner were associated with pet infection. The presence and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been identified in dogs and cats from households with human COVID-19 cases in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. People with COVID-19 should avoid close contact with their pets during the time of their illness.

The coronavirus outbreak has come in the aftermath of other concerning and disastrous events, from the rainforest fires in the Amazon to the wildfires of Australia. So far, the political response worldwide has been limited to identifying the villain and the hero who will first invent the life-saving vaccine. However, in a time of crisis, it is becoming obvious that the problem is not external but rather embedded and systemic. We argue that a political economy based on compound economic growth is unsustainable. While the pandemic is no proof of the unsustainability of economic growth as such, the speed and scope of this disease are driven by the interconnectivities of accelerated globalization. Through three ongoing cases, which we have been studying following a participatory action research approach, we discuss an alternative trajectory of a post-capitalist future based on the convergence of localized manufacturing with the digitally shared knowledge commons.
