A análise de paisagem através da geoecologia consiste numa abordagem de base sistêmica e holística que de forma integrada delineia a compreensão da realidade. Assim, além de apresentar reflexões sobre o estado da paisagem da Ilha do Príncipe, procurou-se delinear as características dos componentes naturais e aspectos socioculturais de forma integrada, como condição necessária ao processo de gestão ambiental. Para a elaboração deste trabalho seguiu-se as seguintes etapas metodológicas: levantamento bibliográfico; análise das condições socioambientais, através da observação das relações socioespaciais locais no campo e leitura e interpretação dos dados de sensoriamento remoto e cartografia temática. Desta forma, constatou-se que a Ilha apresenta um sistema ambiental com biodiversidade diversificada e em bom estado de conservação, porém a nova reestruturação econômica, alicerçada na exploração do turismo, tem demonstrado preocupações quanto a sua qualidade futura, bem como das condições de vida da população local a médio e longo prazo. THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL ECOLOGICAL APPROACH OF THE PRINCE ISLAND/SAO TOMÉ AND PRINCIPE: challenges to the local environmental management ABSTRACT The landscape is understood as a system which includes concrete and abstract elements naturally produced resulting of an integration of it with the socio-cultural and technological components, in both time and space. Based on a theoretical foundation and methodological procedure of the landscape Geo-ecology, this paper aims to analyze the environmental management of the Prince Island/Sao Tomé and Principe presenting an integrated reading of the physical, natural, as well as socio-cultural aspects as support to planning and local, environmental management. The landscape analyses through Geo-ecology comprise a systemic and holistic approach that set out the understanding of reality. Besides presenting the reflection concerning the condition of Price landscape, an attempt was made to set out the physical and natural characteristics and the socio-cultural aspects in an integrated way, as a necessary condition to the environmental management process. Some important methodological steps were followed in the making of this report: bibliographic survey; socio-environmental analysis through observation of the socio-spacial relationship in the field and data reading of distant and cartography. In this way, it’s been noted that the Island has an environmental system with a diverse biodiversity in a good of repair, however, the new economic restructuring, based on the exploitation of tourism, has shown concerns related to its future quality, as well as the life condition of the local population in short and long-term. RESULTADOS: Se detectaron 4 casos de infección por el nuevo coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) por RT-PCR en miembros del personal de salud; solo 1 tenía antecedente de detección por RT-PCR durante el brote inicial ocurrido 95 días antes; los resultados en los residentes fueron negativos. Se encontraron 40 casos con anticuerpos de tipo IgG (63,5%); 12 de ellos (30%) no tenían antecedente de detección mediante RT-PCR en ninguno de los brotes. It overrun people’s life styles, society’s organizational models, welfare systems, the economy and business world, as well as solid waste management schemes. The critical issues that have emerged require actions to overcome the crisis, while paving the way to achieve sustainable development goals: in this view, the CoViD-19 emergency may represent an opportunity, as suggested by the International Institute for the Sustainable Development. This work discusses the impact of the CoViD-19 emergency on both the generation and the management of solid waste originating from both household and healthcare activities. Data about the amount of waste produced and associated ordinary handling procedures were gathered in order to highlight how both have been affected by the measures implemented to cope with the emergency. Nevertheless, an ever-growing number of people (more than 75% of the European population) is living in cities and towns, so that identifying sustainable urban development solutions is a dramatically urgent need. Already in the 70s, some researches proposed parameters to evaluate urbanization costs in Italy, but they mainly focused on the economic and financial sustainability of real estate development. The land value capturing approaches proved to be inadequate when municipal budgets are facing growing social unbalances and critical environmental threats. The question being not just “where the money for urban infrastructures could come from”, but also “what could be a more sustainable development model”. A recent study has suggested that the deletion allele (D allele) of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with hypoxemia in SARS patients. Moreover, the ACE D allele has been shown to be more prevalent in patients suffering from adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in a previous study. Thus, we have investigated the association between ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism and the progression to ARDS or requirement of intensive care in SARS patients. Method One hundred and forty genetically unrelated Chinese SARS patients and 326 healthy volunteers were recruited. The ACE I/D genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. Results There is no significant difference in the genotypic distributions and the allelic frequencies of the ACE I/D polymorphism between the SARS patients and the healthy control subjects. Moreover, there is also no evidence that ACE I/D polymorphism is associated with the progression to ARDS or the requirement of intensive care in the SARS patients. In multivariate logistic analysis, age is the only factor associated with the development of ARDS while age and male sex are independent factors associated with the requirement of intensive care. A recent study has suggested that the deletion allele (D allele) of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with hypoxemia in SARS patients. Moreover, the ACE D allele has been shown to be more prevalent in patients suffering from adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in a previous study. Thus, we have investigated the association between ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism and the progression to ARDS or requirement of intensive care in SARS patients. Method One hundred and forty genetically unrelated Chinese SARS patients and 326 healthy volunteers were recruited. The ACE I/D genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. Results There is no significant difference in the genotypic distributions and the allelic frequencies of the ACE I/D polymorphism between the SARS patients and the healthy control subjects. Moreover, there is also no evidence that ACE I/D polymorphism is associated with the progression to ARDS or the requirement of intensive care in the SARS patients. In multivariate logistic analysis, age is the only factor associated with the development of ARDS while age and male sex are independent factors associated with the requirement of intensive care. Conclusion The ACE I/D polymorphism is not directly related to increased susceptibility to SARS-coronavirus infection and is not associated with poor outcomes after SARS-coronavirus infection.
