The intensive production requires appropriate management of soil to ensure the productivity and to avoid deterioration. One of the alternatives in improving the environmental quality in agriculture is the use of organic waste in the development of crops, reducing the dependence on mineral fertilizers. To evaluate the development of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) using mineral fertilizer and biofertilizer, the experiment was conducted with six treatments randomly distributed in four blocks, with plots of 8.0 x 5.0 meters. The experimentation treatments were characterized as: with and without biofertilizer (WB e WOB, respectively), and for mineral fertilization it was used the recommended dose at planting, ½ dosages and no mineral fertilization (MF, ½ MF, and WOMF). It was adopted conventional cultural practices to prepare the initial soil, followed by irrigation with bovine biofertilizer in dosage of 100 m³ ha-1, three months ahead of sowing. It was evaluated the accumulated mass of the dry matter from different parts of the plant, leaf area and the culture productivity. The results showed similarities between the parameters examined, resulting in better development in the culture that received biofertilizer, either with the combination of half or equivalent amount of mineral fertilizer or only with the use of the effluent biodigester. The analysis of variance proved to be significant for the use of biofertilizer.</text>

<text>A cultura do feijoeiro apresenta elevada importância no contexto agrícola nacional. A’.The dry bean has great importance to Brazilian agriculture. In addition to being a crop that meets the characteristics of family agriculture, it is also cultivated in extensive areas using high technology. Research related to the behavior and development ofthe bean crop in relation to regional soil and climatic variants have assumed a prominent role, especially because it is a plant that is sensitive both to the lack and excess of water in the soil. The objective of this research was to compare two methods of management ofcenter pivot irrigation: a) soil sensor (tensiometry) and b) simplified climatological water balance – Class A pan; in conventional and no-tillage systems of soil cultivate (first year), onthe irrigated dry bean winter crop growing under center pivot in succession to the corn crop in a Oxisol soil. The leaf area index (IAF), dry matter plant production and variation of the soil matrix potential were evaluated. It was concluded that both irrigation managements and tillage systems did not result in differences in IAF, nor in dry matter accumulation along the crop cycle; the tensiometry method brought on a larger variation in the soil matrix potentialthan the Class ‘A’ simplified climatological method.</text>

The physicochemical properties evaluated in the biochar were specific surface area, pore volume, average pore size, total carbon content, pH, total acidity, elemental composition, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content. A higher specific surface area of 108.28 m2/g and a mean pore size diameter of about 2.24 nm were found when the pyrolysis was conducted at 600 °C. In general, the pH and total acidity increased with the increased pyrolysis temperature. The total PAH concentration in all of the combinations studied varied from 0.16 to 8.73 μg/kg, and only phenanthrene, pyrene, and chrysene were detected. The increased temperature seemed to decrease the PAH concentration in the biochar. Nevertheless, there was no correlation found between the PAH content and the combined evaluated parameters.</text>

<text>The phytosanitary emergency caused by the spread of Xylella fastidiosa in the Mediterranean has raised demands for a better understanding of the ecology of its presumed and candidate insect vectors. Here, we present the results of a two-year survey carried out in olive groves across southern, eastern and Central Spain and northeastern Portugal. Several sampling methods were tested and compared to select the most appropriate to estimate population levels of potential vectors of X. fastidiosa. The spittlebugs Philaenus spumarius and Neophilaenus campestris (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) were the main species associated with olive groves. Both species were widely present on herbaceous ground vegetation within the olive groves; P. spumarius mainly associated with Asteraceae and N. campestris with Poaceae. Due to the patchy distribution of spittlebugs within the olive groves, sweep nets were the most effective and least time-consuming sampling method for the estimation of population size both in the ground cover and tree canopies. Trends in population density showed that spittlebugs can be abundant on ground vegetation but very rare on olive canopies. Spittlebugs disperse in late spring to non-cultivated hosts that act as natural reservoirs. In late fall, adults return to the olive groves for oviposition. However, olive trees may act as transient hosts for spittlebugs and high population densities of these insect vectors should be avoided in areas where X. fastidiosa is present.</text>
