Large scale sequencing of small RNA libraries obtained from C. elegans has revealed that a broad spectrum of siRNAs is endogenously transcribed from genomic sequences. The biological role and molecular diversity of C. elegans endogenous siRNA (endo-siRNA) molecules, nonetheless, remain poorly understood. In order to gain insight into their biological function, we annotated two large libraries of endo-siRNA sequences, identified their cognate targets, and performed gene ontology analysis to identify enriched functional categories. Results Systematic trends in categorization of target genes according to the specific length of siRNA sequences were observed: 18- to 22-mer siRNAs were associated with genes required for embryonic development; 23-mers were associated uniquely with post-embryonic development; 24–26-mers were associated with phosphorus metabolism or protein modification. Moreover, we observe that some argonaute related genes associate with siRNAs with multiple reads. Sequence frequency graphs suggest that different lengths of siRNAs share similarities in overall sequence structure: the 5' end begins with G, while the body predominates with U and C. Conclusion These results suggest that the lengths of endogenous siRNA molecules are consequential to their biological functions since the gene ontology categories for their cognate mRNA targets vary depending upon their lengths. In turn, functional diversity describes how assemblages of species as a whole are adapted to their environment, which also determines how they might react to changing conditions. To fully understand functional diversity, it is fundamental to (a) disentangle the influences of environmental filtering and species richness from each other, (b) assess if the trait space saturates at high levels of species richness, and (c) understand how changes in species numbers affect the relative importance of the trait niche expansion and packing. In the present study, we determined functional diversity of fern assemblages by describing morphological traits related to resource acquisition along four tropical elevational transects with different environmental conditions and species richness. We used several functional diversity indices and their standardized effect size to consider different aspects of functional diversity. We contrasted these aspects of functional diversity with climate data and species richness using linear models and linear mixed models. Our results show that functional morphological trait diversity was primarily driven by species richness and only marginally by environmental conditions. Moreover, increasing species richness contributed progressively to packing of the morphological niche space, while at the same time decreasing morphological expansion until a saturation point was reached. Overall, our findings suggest that the density of co-occurring species is the fundamental driving force of morphological niche structure, and environmental conditions have only an indirect influence on fern resource acquisition strategies. Using functional genomics, we analyzed early host responses to SARS-CoV infection in the lungs of adolescent cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that show lung pathology similar to that observed in human adults with SARS. Analysis of gene signatures revealed induction of a strong innate immune response characterized by the stimulation of various cytokine and chemokine genes, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IP-10, which corresponds to the host response seen in acute respiratory distress syndrome. As opposed to many in vitro experiments, SARS-CoV induced a wide range of type I interferons (IFNs) and nuclear translocation of phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 in the lungs of macaques. Using immunohistochemistry, we revealed that these antiviral signaling pathways were differentially regulated in distinctive subsets of cells. Our studies emphasize that the induction of early IFN signaling may be critical to confer protection against SARS-CoV infection and highlight the strength of combining functional genomics with immunohistochemistry to further unravel the pathogenesis of SARS. One of the best VWO management measures is the use of tolerant cultivars. Remarkably, no information is available about olive functional traits and their potential relationship with tolerance to V. dahliae. Twenty-five selected functional traits (for leaf, stem, root and whole plant) were evaluated in six olive varieties differing in their VWO tolerance level to identify possible links between this phenotype and functional traits’ variation. High intervarietal diversity was found among cultivars and several functional traits were related with VWO tolerance. Tolerant varieties showed higher leaf area, dry matter content (leaf, stem and plant) and mass fraction for stems, but lower for leaves. Significant differences were also detected for root functional traits, tolerant cultivars displaying larger fine root diameter and lignin content but smaller specific length and area of thick and fine roots. Correlations were found among functional traits both within varieties and between levels of tolerance/susceptibility to VWO. Associations were observed between biomass allocation, dry matter content and VWO tolerance. The most relevant difference between tolerant and susceptible cultivars was related to root system architecture. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo determinar el cumplimiento de las exigencias técnicas y agrotécnicas, y los indicadores tecnológico-explotativos y económicos y de los tractores de baja potencia, realizando operaciones de subsolado, roturación, cruce, mullición y acanterado, Para este trabajo se seleccionó como área experimental una casa de cultivos protegidos modelo BK-2, que está generalizada en Cuba y como fuentes energéticas representativas se emplearon los tractores Carraro y MTZ-321. Esta casa protegida fue diseñada con el propósito de obtener rendimientos alrededor de 60 t/ha de hortalizas, y está basada en túneles 540 m2 ubicados en módulos que ocupan 1 ha, con el propósito de un mejor aprovechamiento del sistema de riego, la maquinaria y la energía eléctrica. Se confeccionó una metodología para realizar los experimentos basada en los Instructivos Técnicos para las investigaciones de los equipos utilizados. Los tractores con que se trabajaron eran no articulados y para ellos se calculó la franja de viraje necesaria en las casas de cultivos la cual fue de 3,84 m a 4,96 m. Como resultados se determinó que las productividades alcanzadas por los tractores MTZ-321 y Carraro son similares con cada uno de los aperos estudiados. No hay diferencias importantes entre los gastos totales de trabajo anuales, pero en cuanto a los gastos trasferidos, el MTZ-321 supera al Carraro en un 33% a 50%, lo cual se debe fundamentalmente al mayor consumo de combustible y es de destacar que todos cumplieron satisfactoriamente con las exigencias agrotécnicas. En este trabajo, una vez estudiados y considerados los principios «todo está conectado» y el «todo es superior a la parte» como los fundamentos de la encíclica, se aborda la teología de la creación de corte trinitario y la filosofía de la biología de los sistemas abiertos que se consideran los lugares donde echan las raíces los principios citados. Ahora bien, esta investigación también saca a la luz el ángulo muerto de la ecología integral: el puesto del hombre en el cosmos y su derivada ética.
