Debido a esto, surgen alternativas como la bioeconomía que busca disminuir el impacto ambiental y cambio climático a través de sus principales senderos. Los principales resultados muestran que durante el período entre los años 2015 y 2018 la contribución del sector agrícola se mantuvo en 14%, ocupando el tercer lugar después del sector de industria manufacturera y la intermediación financiera. The objective of this study was to describe and analyze the knowledge and practices of urban farmers, and how they categorize and control animals that are considered pests of cultivated plants. The survey was conducted in areas of cultivated vegetables in the vicinity of the Supply Logistics Center of Pernambuco (CEASA) in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco State, in northeastern Brazil. Thirty-three farmers were interviewed, who mentioned 13 animals as pests. The most frequent animal cited as a pest that causes injuries to cultivated plants was the ant, and the most frequent ecological relation cited was cochineals that were described as “mold”. The techniques used to control undesired animals are related to the cultural identity of the farmers and the market, resulting in a predominantly utilitarian perception of natural resources. Especially in rural areas, water with appropriate quality, available at the right time is required to meet basic needs and to improve the productivity of land and labor. The Water Poverty Index (WPI) is able to assess whether individuals possess this natural resource in satisfactory quantity and quality, for both household and community use. This work focuses on the application of WPI in João Batista Soares Agrarian Reform Settlement, Carapebus, Brazil. The settlement has environmental problems such as degraded soil, lack of vegetation, and it is considered environmentally vulnerable. Through the application of the WPI, we conclude that the settlement also has water shortage, as the index result was 42.5%, a rate which reflects water insecurity. The water shortage of the settlers affects their production, earning income and quality of life. We believe that access to the settler’s rights to funding and grant can alleviate water shortage and minimize the environmental vulnerability faced by these individuals. Encontramos que o processo decisório sobre o uso da terra é fortemente atrelado à indissociabilidade das categorias camponesas “terra”, “trabalho” e “família” e a categorias específicas dos colonos do sul do Brasil, tais como “liberdade”, “capricho com a terra” e “trabalho árduo”. Destacamos ainda a importância da produção para consumo familiar e o recurso a atividades não-agrícolas como estratégias de reprodução da unidade produtiva e a fumicultura como uma atividade que ameaça essa reprodução.
