<text>In the humid tropics, the largest obstacle to the implementation of sustainable farming systems is the reduced efficiency of nutrient use by crops. This study assesses the effectiveness of five selected rhizobia strains in symbiosis with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), with the objective of replacing N fertilization in the predominant agricultural system used by smallholder farmers. The study was carried out in three adjacent areas with distinct agricultural uses: conventional tillage, itinerant agriculture, and a no-till system. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks with four replicates and seven treatments: five rhizobia strains (BR3262, BR3267, BR3299, INPA3-11B, and UFLA 3-84) and two controls without inoculation (one without mineral N and another fertilized with 74 kg N ha-1). We measured the dry mass of 100 grains, nodules and shoots, as well as cowpea yields and calculated relative and absolute efficiency indices for dry biomass production of cowpea shoots. Agricultural uses affected the number and dry mass of the nodules and, consequently, the mass of the dry plant matter and bean yield. In terms of yield, there was a major difference between the conventional and the itinerant systems. Yield was around four times as high in the itinerant system (1009.9 kg ha-1 compared to 243.7 kg ha-1). Under conditions of cohesion-prone soils, the system of conventional tillage reduces the possibility of cultivation of a second harvest in the year even with inoculation or N fertilization.

The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse from May 1 to July 31, 2008, in Areia county, Paraiba State, PB, Brazil, in order to evaluate the effects of irrigation water salinity on initial growth of the passionfruit seedlings in non-saline substrate with and without bovine biofertilizer. The treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design, with three replications and twelve plants per plots, in a factorial arrangement 5 x 2 x 2, corresponding the former to the levels of salinity in the irrigation water: 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0 and 4.0 dS m-1, in soils with and without bovine biofertilizer applied at two moments (25 and 65 days after seedling emergence). The growth of the seedlings and the soil electrical conductivity were evaluated at the end of the experiment. The biofertilizer was diluted in a low saline water at a 1:1 ratio and was applied once two days before sowing, corresponding to 10% of the substrates volume. The increase in water salinity inhibited the growth in height of plants, leaf area and root length, but always to a lesser extent in the treatments with bovine biofertilizer. The increase in electrical conductivity of the irrigation water elevated the soil salinity, independently of the addition of biofertilizer.</text>

The purpose of this paper is to identify and characterize forestry and socio-economic systems of tidal river floodplain utilization in agroforestry production units (UPA). Forest inventory techniques, budget sheets and questionnaires were utilized. The results obtained express an average floristic composition of 2,920.7 plants/ha, with a breast-high circumference (CHC)>10cm, the highest frequency being for açaí (Euterpe oleracea) (50.63%), cocoa (Theobroma cacau) (31.02%) and virola (Virola surinamensis) (6.76%). The system comprises timber and non-timber forest exploitation, fishing, and poultry and swine raising. The annual cost of the agroforestry system (SAF) is R$1,866.25/UPA and annual gross income is R$2,959.08/UPA. It was concluded that the system is an agro-silvi-pastoral one, where poultry and swine raising utilizes floodplain shellfish as feed source; in principle, the technology used is favorable to the ecosystem conservation; however, there is a need for improving the quality of family labor. The SAF annual gross income demonstrates the economic feasibility of the UPAs at a minimum wage level; however, such units are multi-functional and have multiple incomes whose non-agricultural earnings are fundamental to families persevering in this activity and staying in the rural environment.</text>

= The pinhão-manso (Jatropha curcas L.), from the Euforbiaceae famíly, is a species that can be raised in different edafoclimatic conditions. It presents a regular medicinal and ornamental value, and it is also useful for oil production, Nowadays it is increasing the interest in the agronomic knowledge of this culture, mostly related to the selection and improving of more productive and economically feasible varieties, mainly due to its high potencial for biodiesel production. Although this species is not yet cultivated for market use in Brasil, it has shown feasibility for family agriculture in North and Northeast regions, because of its great resistance to draught as well as its good adaptation to high temperatures and insolation. This species can also produce in highly acid and scarcely fertile soils, such as those in the Amazonian savannah. There are various studies in progress dedicated to this culture in Roraima state, and through these studies, it may be achieved a possibility to develop feasible production technologies that could be adopted by family agriculture. That would show a promising alternative for job creation and better income, fostering the recovering and protection of modified areas, and promoting the organization of native fruit and annual cultures consortiums.</text>

We document the diet of wild boar in south-central Chile based on analysis of 20 stomachs collected on the outskirts of Mocho-Choshuenco volcano (39°54' S, 72°02' W) and of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (41°03' S, 71°54' W). The diet incorporates animals, plants and fungi. Among the latter two, both epigeal and hypogeal parts are consumed, together with fruits and seeds. Fungi and rhizomes of Gunnera tinctoria are the most abundant plant items in the diet. The wild boar in Chile forages chiefly in forested environments, but nonetheless the most frequent plant items in its diet are found in open spaces or outside the forest. Environments dominated by bamboos Chusquea spp. constitute important foraging sites. Rodents in the family Muridae prevail among animal items in the wild boar diet. This situation, however, is associated to the occurrence of a mouse outbreak (ratada) resulting from the mast seeding of Chusquea spp. during our study. Birds in the family Rhinocryptidae together with invertebrates (specially Coleopteran larvae of Chiasognathus grantii) made up a sizeable part of the animals in the wild boar diet. In comparison to elsewhere, the wild boar in Chile consumes fungi in a similar percentage of occurence (65 %) as in the United States of America but much higher than in Europe (5-32 %). With regard to the animal component, the wild boar in Chile consumes more (20 % volume) of such items than in the United States of America (6 %) and in Europe (7-13 %)</text>
