Intercropping is commonly practiced in the production of vegetable crops due to diverse economic benefits. In some cases, it may decrease the infestations of pests by favoring the conservation of the natural enemies in the agroecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomical viability of the kale and coriander intercropping, under organic management, based on phytotechnical parameters, and its influence on the populations of ladybeetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in comparison to respective sole crops. Coriander, representing the secondary crop, was used aiming to provide resources to ladybeetles. The study was carried out in area of the Sistema Integrado de Produção Agroecológica, Seropédica county, State of Rio de Janeiro. The experiment consisted of two types of intercropping: 1) kale intercropped with coriander, whose four lines of plants were harvested at the vegetative phase (intercropping I), and 2) kale intercropped with coriander, whose plants of the two internal lines (near to the line of kale) were harvested at the vegetable phase, and the two external lines were cut after blossom (intercropping II). In both intercropping the phytotechnical parameters of the kale and the coriander at the vegetative phase (commercial standard) were evaluated, while in the intercropping II, the populations of ladybeetles were also evaluated by weekly samples of adults, in comparison to kale sole crop. The experimental design was of randomized blocks with four replicates. Coriander did not interfere in the productivity of the kale intercropped and its introduction contributed positively to the abundance and the species diversity of ladybeetles. The land equivalent ratio for the intercropping I, taking into account the yield of fresh aerial biomass, was superior in 92% in relation to kale sole crop. This result demonstrates the viability of the intercropping I, in the organic management adopted, for cultivation of autumn in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Baixada Fluminense region.</text>

Onion is a highly consumed vegetable whose production is based on smallholder agriculture. The onion production is responsible for the generation of jobs and income for many farmers who have this as the only source of income. There is a growing demand for onion production technologies suitable for smallholders, with emphasis on agroecology. In this respect, we highlight the use of mulches and organic fertilizers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different mulches, associated to increasing doses of castor bean cake applied in side dressing on total production and diameter of onion bulbs grown in organic system. There was a significant effect of the mulch over the total yield and the yield obtained of different diameter classes of bulbs. There were no significant effects of side dressing with the castor bean cake, neither of the interaction between the mulch and the fertilization with castor bean cake. The beneficial effect of mulch which probably had more influence on the increasing of onion yield was the maintenance of moisture and reduction of soil temperature range.</text>

<text>ABSTRACT: The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the effects of irrigation depths applied through drip and presence/absence of soil cover in onion yield, under agroecological farming. The experiment was conducted in Seropédica, RJ, Brazil, from May to September 2012. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with split-plot design with 10 treatments and 7 replications, characterized by the presence (+S) and absence (-S) of soil cover and five irrigation depths according to percentages of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc): 0, 22, 45, 75 and 100% (0, 155, 220.6, 320.5 and 372,7mm in +S condition and 0, 145.5, 207.6, 285, 351,4mm in -S condition). The irrigation influenced by second-order polynomial regression the total yield of bulbs, percentage distribution of bulbs in diameter classes and water use efficiency (WUE) in the -S condition, and in the linear regression the WUE in +S condition. The soil cover promoted an increase on the total bulb yield, WUE and the percentage of bulbs classified in classes of greater diameter.</text>

Both materials were ground and used according to the following treatments: 100% corncob (T1), 100% Azolla (T2), 50% corncob + Azolla 50% (T3), corncob 75% + Azolla 25% (T4), 25% corncob + Azolla 75% (T5) and then compared to a commercial substrate (BM2) (T6). Substrates were uniformly mixed, deposited in germination trays and watered at field capacity. Additionally, physic-chemical characteristics were determined in the different substrates used for broccoli seedling production. Stem diameter, height plant and root volume showed to be statistically higher in seedlings grown in commercial substrate (0.18 cm, 5.27 cm and 0.61 cm3, respectively) followed by those seedlings grown in 100% Azolla (0.17 cm, 4.92 cm and 0.49 cm3, respectively) (p< 0.001). Seedlings growing in substrates with higher corncob proportion showed lower values in these vegetative parameters. Based on our results, Azolla showed potential to be used as a seed substrate for production of broccoli seedlings, thus decreasing the use of peat and consequently the production costs in nurseries.</text>
