A cv.

On May 1 of 2006, the President of Bolivia Evo Morales passed a decree to nationalise hydrocarbons which, in nine brief clauses, inaugurated a new cycle of State participation in the economy. The initial reactions tended to be concerned with the merits and risks of nationalisation itself, but few analyses have considered the long term impact of this process. Beyond the conjunctural debate on the role of the State in the economy, it seems relevant to assess the implications of a «gas led economy» from a historical perspective. The article examines the prospects of an economic model «beyond the gas», which includes exports of jewellery, textiles, leather goods, timber, and organic produce, with the participation of actors from the urban and rural sectors. This economy structured around a broader productive base has the potential to generate employment, redistribute income and establish a new productive base for the emerging middle class in the urban areas. The principle challenge at present is building a bridge between a «gas economy» and a new «economy beyond the gas».</text>

L. Moench var. Blanco C-21) y maíz (Zea mays.
