El artículo pretende brindar un panorama general sobre la realidad global y las principales dinámicas relacionadas con el tema del cambio climático, desde un proceso de reflexión humanística, crítica y holística sobre los retos y desafíos actuales que plantea este tema, con el fin de desarrollar una mejor comprensión y un mayor compromiso en la búsqueda de soluciones globales y locales. Además de los aspectos técnicos, la gestión del cambio climático requiere de una perspectiva humanística, capaz de integrar la dimensión ética, social, educativa y cultural, que permita comprender el papel que desempeña el ser humano, su vulnerabilidad, la distribución geográfica del fenómeno, los impactos esperados, los escenarios presentes y futuros (costos y beneficios) y el planteamiento de soluciones posibles, desde las decisiones cotidianas de la ciudadanía, hasta las políticas públicas impulsadas por las instituciones locales, los estados y las organizaciones internacionales. Costa Rica se ha preocupado y tiene una gran voluntad por mitigar el cambio climático. Sin embargo, el problema es que nuestro país es muy vulnerable a las consecuencias y, en el corto y mediano plazos, se requiere plantear medidas concretas de adaptación que tomen en cuenta sus necesidades reales y que vinculen directamente a la población con participación activa.

Las políticas públicas en general y, por lo tanto, las referidas al fenómeno del cambio climático no son neutrales en términos de género. Los planes de acción contra los efectos de la crisis climática, según cómo se conciban, diseñen y proyecten, pueden profundizar las brechas estructurales de género, siendo ciegos a las desigualdades, o promover una mayor equidad al problematizarlas desde una perspectiva de género. De este modo, se configuran como una oportunidad para transversalizar la perspectiva de género a partir de una lectura crítica del contexto local y sus estructuras de desigualdad, la generación de indicadores de vulnerabilidad desagregados por género y un diagnóstico del rol que desempeñan las mujeres en relación a la gestión de los bienes de la naturaleza.

La producción de orégano es de relevancia económica en el noroeste de México. Sin embargo, los productores para obtener altos rendimientos recurren a la fertilización química, pero su mal uso, agudiza la salinidad. Lippia palmeri crece de manera natural en suelos áridos, pobres en materia orgánica, alta salinidad y temperatura en el noroeste de México. En el contexto de una agricultura sustentable, los microorganismos mantienen la fertilidad del suelo e incrementan la productividad de la planta. Actualmente existe interés en proponer biofertilizantes en la agricultura de alta intrusión salina y elevadas temperaturas para el cultivo de orégano. Las Halobacterias Promotoras del Crecimiento de Plantas (HPCP), se han destacado por beneficiar a los cultivos nutrimentalmente y mitigar el efecto de la salinidad. El objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en identificar termo- y halo-tolerantes HPCP asociadas a la rizosfera de L. palmeri; se evaluó la actividad solubilizadora de fosfatos, producción de ácidos orgánicos, sideróforos y fijación de nitrógeno; se identificaron mediante el gen ARNr-16S aquellas con alta actividad evaluándose su efecto en la germinación y longitud radicular. Quince diferentes colonias sobresalieron al crecer en NaCl (0.25, 0.50 y 0.75 M) a 35 y 45 °C, destacando tres bacterias identificadas: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus subtilis y Bacillus licheniformis. El efecto en la longitud radicular es significativo por la aplicación de B. amyloliquefaciens. Estudios relacionados con la promoción vegetal deben ser considerados en posteriores estudios. Este es el primer informe de B. amyloliquefaciens como una bacteria fijadora de nitrógeno asociada a L. palmeri.

Colorimetric sensors developed by the solution blow spinning (SBS) technique have a rapid response to a variation in different physicochemical properties. In this study, polystyrene nanofibrous (PSNF) mats containing the bromothymol blue (BTB) indicator were obtained by SBS for the pH sensing of wine sample. The incorporation of the indicator did not promote changes in fiber diameter but led to the appearance of beads, allowing for the encapsulation of BTB. The halochromic property of BTB was retained in the PSNF material, and the migration tests showed that the indicator mats presented values below the maximum acceptable limit (10 mg dm−2) established by EU Commission Regulation No. 10/2011 for foods with an alcohol content up to 20%. The present study opens the possibility of applying nanostructured materials to innovative food packaging which, through nanosensory zones, change color as a function of the food pH.

A lo largo de los últimos 70 años, los Kaiowa y Guaraní que viven en Brasil sufrieron la pérdida masiva de sus territorios tradicionales. A partir del caso de Tierra Indígena Caarapó se argumenta que la expropiación territorial y las políticas públicas que la promovieron condujeron a cambios sociales y ambientales significativos y disgregadores entre los kaiowa y guaraní, comprometiendo su soberanía alimentaria. Se muestra que los rituales—no se realizan más— ligados a la producción agrícola eran eventos que producían reciprocidad ampliada entre las parentelas, además de la abundancia de alimentos. Se concluye que el enfrentamiento de la situación por parte del Estado, en lo que se refiere a la garantía de la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional de estos pueblos, ha sido parcial y desalentador.

Although the emphasis on behaviors of hand-washing and mask-wearing was repeated during the pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), not everyone paid enough attention to this. A descriptive statistic was used to make sense of the status of hand hygiene and mask-wearing among primary school students in Wuhan, China. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the risk factors affecting the behaviors of hand-washing and mask-wearing. p < 0.05 (two-sides) was considered as significant at statistics. 42.05% of the primary school students showed a good behavior of hand-washing, while 51.60% had a good behavior of mask-wearing. Gender, grade, out-going history, father’s occupation, mother’s educational background, and the time filling out the survey were significantly associated with hand hygiene, whereas grade, mother’s educational background, and residence were associated with mask-wearing. The behaviors of hand-washing and mask-wearing among primary school students were influenced by gender, grade, shady is back tell a friendand other factors, therefore, parents should make efforts of behavior guidance whereas governments should enlarge medium publicity.

Hand hygiene is of utmost importance as it may be contaminated easily from direct contact with airborne microorganism droplets from coughs and sneezes. Particularly in situations like pandemic outbreak, it is crucial to interrupt the transmission chain of the virus by the practice of proper hand sanitization. It can be achieved with contact isolation and strict infection control tool like maintaining good hand hygiene in hospital settings and in public. The success of the hand sanitization solely depends on the use of effective hand disinfecting agents formulated in various types and forms such as antimicrobial soaps, water-based or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, with the latter being widely used in hospital settings. To date, most of the effective hand sanitizer products are alcohol-based formulations containing 62%–95% of alcohol as it can denature the proteins of microbes and the ability to inactivate viruses. This systematic review correlated with the data available in Pubmed, and it will investigate the range of available hand sanitizers and their effectiveness as well as the formulation aspects, adverse effects, and recommendations to enhance the formulation efficiency and safety. Further, this article highlights the efficacy of alcohol-based hand sanitizer against the coronavirus.

Los albores del siglo XX estuvieron marcados por el surgimiento de agentes infecciosos y el resurgimiento de otros considerados controlados, eventos ambos posiblemente conectados con alteraciones ecológicas que condujeron al reconocimiento de un notorio cambio climático, del cual apenas comenzamos a ver los efectos. Entre todas las variedades de agentes infecciosos considerados nuevos, los virus sobresalen en número no sólo por su capacidad de proliferación, sino también por su versatilidad genética, lo que los hace más diestros para evolucionar y adaptarse a nuevas circunstancias. Uno de los agentes virales más ubicuos y populares de las Américas en los últimos tiempos, son los transmitidos por roedores silvestres y urbanos, y entre estos, están los hantavirus causantes de un conocido síndrome pulmonar humano. Este género viral, del cual se han descubierto cerca de 18 agentes sólo en Suramérica en las últimas dos décadas, pertenece a la familia Bunyaviridae; aunque muchos de sus representantes sólo causan infecciones persistentes en roedores silvestres (miembros de la subfamilia Sigmodontinae) y subclínicas en el hombre, otros pueden causar una letalidad humana del 60 %. El objetivo de este documento fue revisar el estado actual del conocimiento de algunos aspectos generales de los hantavirus y las enfermedades que producen en el mundo, mencionando de paso los hallazgos más recientes en nuestro país. Al final se discuten algunas de las muchas dudas aún presentes respecto a la importancia clínica y los impactos que estos agentes puedan ocasionar sobre la salud pública humana en Colombia.

Los hantavirus son un grupo de patógenos emergentes (familia Bunyaviridae; género Hantavirus) identificados como agentes etiológicos de la Fiebre Hemorrágica con Síndrome Renal (FHSR) en Europa y Asia y el Síndrome Cardiopulmonar por Hantavirus (SCPH) en las Américas. La FHSR está relacionada con roedores de las subfamilias Murinae y Arvicolinae y el SCPH con roedores de las subfamilias Sigmodontinae y Arvicolinae. Desde la identificación del SCPH en los EE.UU. en 1993, muchos casos de SCPH y un número cada vez mayor de hantavirus y sus roedores reservorios han sido identificados en Centro y Sud América. Estudios epidemiológicos han demostrado diferencias notables en las seroprevalencias de anticuerpos en humanos y roedores reservorios que oscilan entre el 1% y más del 40%. Hasta ahora han sido notificados en toda América más de 1500 casos de SCPH y aproximadamente más de 15 variantes de hantavirus genética y serológicamente distintos asociados a roedores sigmodontinos. Las formas clínicas leves-autolimitadas, moderadas y graves de la enfermedad, los antecedentes de transmisión persona a persona y una incidencia mayor de manifestaciones clínicas extrapulmonares que se diferencian de la enfermedad clásica descrita por primera vez en EE.UU., son aspectos importantes sobre la epidemiología de los hantavirus y el SCPH en Latinoamérica; sin embargo, la historia completa de los hantavirus está aún por escribirse, debido a la naturaleza dinámica de estos virus y sus patologías, y a la complejidad de los factores que intervienen en su aparición, establecimiento y diseminación en poblaciones humanas y animales. Latinoamérica continúa representando la porción del continente con una oportunidad única y desafiante para el estudio de la relación de los hantavirus con sus huéspedes reservorios naturales y las interacciones virus-roedor-humano. Probablemente más hantavirus podrían ser descritos en el futuro, y serían necesarios más datos para entender su diversidad y evolución.The hantaviruses are a group of emerging rodent-borne pathogens (family Bunyaviridae; Genus Hantavirus) that are etiologic agents for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. HFRS is associated with rodents of the family Muridae, subfamilies Murinae and Arvicolinae; HPS is associated with rodents of the subfamily Sigmodontinae. Since the identification of HCPS in USA in 1993, a large number of cases of HPS and an increasing number of hantaviruses and rodent reservoir hosts have been identified in Central and South America. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated important differences in frequency of infection with hantaviruses in both human and rodent host populations. Antibody prevalences in rodent and human populations may vary from less than 1% to more than 40%. Currently, more than 1500 cases of HCPS have been reported and more than 15 genetically distinct variants of hantaviruses, all associated with sigmodontine rodents, have been identified throughout the Americas. Several characteristics distinguish Latin American HCPS cases from the classical HCPS described for the first time in the USA. These include a variation in severity of disease from moderate and self-limiting to severe, the demonstration of person-to-person transmission, and a somewhat higher incidence of extrapulmonary clinical manifestations in the South American form of HCPS. Nevertheless, our understanding of hantaviruses in the Americas is still far from complete. The factors involved in the dynamics of these viruses in nature, their establishment and transmission within host populations and from hosts to humans, and the variable pathology of these viruses in humans are complex. It is likely that more hantaviruses will be described in the future, and much more data will be required in order to describe the diversity and evolution of this group of pathogens. Latin America, as the center of diversity for Sigmodontine rodents and their hantaviruses is presented with the unique opportunity as well as the challenge of being center stage for continued studies of the dynamics of hantaviruses in natural host populations and the links of host and virus to human populations.
