El objetivo de este trabajo fue medir el carbono capturado en la fracción aérea de la planta de la palma de aceite (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). El estudio se realizó de enero del 2016 a junio del 2017 en tres regiones productoras; donde a veintiún plantas de doce años en promedio se les determinó la biomasa del estípite mediante la técnica del cono truncado, mientras que, para las hojas se utilizó la equivalencia del 65% de la biomasa del estípite. Con estos datos se realizó una estadística descriptiva para conocer los valores de biomasa. La cantidad de C se determinó por el método de Walkley y Black modificado por espectrofotometría de UV. La biomasa acumulada por planta fue de 1877,30 kg, que representó 268,45 t/ha con una densidad promedio de 143 plantas/ha. El 49,35% y 44,15% fue carbono en estípite y hojas, respectivamente; por tanto, la cantidad de este elemento fue 877,64 kg de carbono por planta, que representó 125,5 t/ha. Se generó una ecuación alométrica que estima la biomasa a partir del volumen del estípite (y = 243,86 + 990,61x), así como para la cantidad de carbono a partir de la biomasa (y = 149,07 + 0,39x). Se determinaron dos modelos alométricos con los datos obtenidos del cultivo de palma de aceite, los cuales se sugiere sean evaluados en campo para determinar el grado de confiabilidad en la estimación de biomasa y el carbono almacenado bajo condiciones agroclimáticas similares a las del presente estudio. El documen-to explora esta paradoja y contrasta la hipótesis de que la inseguridad alimentaria está determinada no sólo por la insuficiencia sino por la incertidumbre del flujo de ingresos, conduciendo el análisis hacia la perspectiva de la estabilidad laboral. Estos modelos por lo general integran un conjunto de modelos matemáticos que dentro de un soporte computacional (software) pueden llegar a predecir el impacto que podría ocasionar un sistema de manejo del suelo sobre el agua en particular y sobre el ambiente en general. Por otra parte la previsión del efecto de los cambios climáticos globales sobre el suelo también es posible a través de estas herramientas. Sin embargo, los mismos requieren de datos de entrada que en ocasiones no están fácilmente disponibles como es el caso de las propiedades físicas de los suelos, y dentro de estas aquellas relacionadas con el funcionamiento hídrico. A esta situación hay que añadir que en ocasiones los datos existen, pero debido al método utilizado en su obtención y la manera en que son expresados, su utilización en los modelos de simulación conduce a resultados que están muy alejados de lo que ocurre realmente en el ambiente natural que se está estudiando. En el trabajo se muestran las propiedades físicas más utilizadas en algunos de los modelos de simulación con los que se ha trabajado en nuestro país, así como su manera de expresarse y el método que se recomienda para su determinación en el campo. Description An account of the resource La Reserva de la Biosfera de Urdaibai (RBU) es uno de los espacios naturales protegidos más importantes del País Vasco. Históricamente, la importancia de Urdaibai para las aves ha potenciado el desarrollo de diversos estudios de avifauna en la zona. No existe, hasta la fecha, una revisión que facilite tener un punto de vista global sobre lo que se ha publicado, identificando lo que ya se conoce bien, así como los déficits de conocimiento que deberían ser subsanados en el futuro o la identificación de oportunidades de investigación en el ámbito de la avifauna. El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una revisión de los estudios de avifauna llevados a cabo hasta ahora en la RBU. Se analiza el periodo 1960-2012. El número de estudios de avifauna en la RBU asciende a 86, de los que un 51,2% (44) lo son en forma de artículo científico, un 37,2% (32) de informes, un 9,3% (8) de libros y un 2,3% (2) de tesis (de las que únicamente una es doctoral). Se publican en promedio 1,6 trabajos por año, si bien esta tasa se ha incrementado en los últimos años pasando de 0,1 en la década de 1960 a 5,0 en la década actual. En cuanto a la temática, globalmente, el 30,3% de la literatura se centra en la distribución y estimación de tamaño de población de distintas especies. Le siguen los estudios que analizan aspectos de biogeografía y comunidades o ensamblados (25,8%), así como los estudios sobre ecología migratoria (24,7%). Al considerar grupos de especies, destacan los estudios que se centran en la avifauna acuática (65,1%). Por otro lado, son mayoritarios los estudios que tratan exclusivamente la RBU (n = 52) frente a los que incluyen muestras más allá del ámbito geográfico de la RBU (n = 34). En las áreas agrícolas de la cuenca del Río Cuyaguateje, los animales de trabajo son la principal fuente de potencia para las labores agrícolas. El estudio fue conducido en parcelas, y en ellas fueron realizados tres experimentos. El primero: laboreo con arado de vertedera en contorno (c), el segundo, rastrillo perpendicular al contorno (r) y el tercero, arado a favor y en contra de la pendiente (af y c). En todos los casos se utilizaron trazadores para medir la traslocación del suelo y con ello evaluar la erosión por laboreo. A partir del análisis de las mediciones realizadas se observa la tendencia a que el suelo se desplace preferentemente en el sentido de la pendiente en cada parcela. Algunos factores que influyeron en los resultados fueron: 1) la presencia de malas hierbas alteró el movimiento de los trazadores en algunos tramos de la pendiente; 2) La profundidad del laboreo no se mantuvo durante toda la labranza.
