The aim of this essay is to contribute with the articulation of a trans-disciplinary research field, political ecology, by means of the comparative synthesis of two works: 'The New Science of Organizations' by Alberto Guerreiro Ramos (1981), and 'The Mutation Point', by Fritjof Capra (1982). The central hypothesis of this article is that both authors, although with very different academic background, get to very similar conclusions in these two works, under the same emergent paradigm. Given the still diffuse context of environmentalist thought these books may be considered classics of political ecology.</text>

The present work aims to contribute to the characterization of forest resource use in rural settlements, taking as the case of study the settlement Horto Vergel in Mogi-Mirim, São Paulo State. For data collection, partially structured interviews were used, along with direct observation in the field. The farmers interviewed were randomly sampled and represented 42,63% from the total population of the settlement. The results obtained indicated that most farmers interviewed in the Settlement '12 de Outubro' (81,4%) use forestry resources on some scale, but not in a proper way, which can lead to the depletion of these resources in a medium term. Such resources are used for coal and wood production, as well the selling of eucalyptus stumps, essential oil production from leaves, incipient beekeeping activities and seed collection for tree seedling production. In general, forest resources are seen as secondary and supporting, or even antagonist elements for abidance in the land.</text>

Between April and September 1983 observations were made on the relations between Thalurcnia furcata colombica and flowers in the laguna de Pedro Palo area (Cundinamarca, Colombia). The hummingbird was seen visiting 15 species of plants (beloging to 13 families) situated mainly on the edge of forest, among which the following species showed a high degree of ornithophily: Besleria solanoides (Gesneriaceae), Bomarea racemose (Amaryllidaceae), Cornutia odorata (Verbenaceae), Erythrina edulis (Fabaceae) and Palicourea popayanensis (Rubiaceae). Nectar was available for hummingbirds during the six months of study. Although males and females of the species had similar habitat and food preferences, a relatively small number of agressive encounters between them was recorded. Three mechanisms were recognized which contributed to reduce these encounters: 1. a difference in foraging strategies, males being predominantly territorial and females generalists (behaving as territorial or 'trapliners' according to circumstances) ; 2. differences in the temporal organization of their foraging activity through the day; 3. differences in spatial organization, males and females tending to exploit different parts of the same plant. Thalurania furcata defended its feeding territories against individuals of its own and other species of hummingbirds (Chlorostilbon gibsoni, Coeliqena prunellei and others), flower-piercers (mainly Dlglossa sittoides), and butterflies.</text>

The main agronomic, industrial, and morphological characteristics of a new Brazilian potato cultivar released by IAPAR, Embrapa Hortaliças, Brasília-DF and Embrapa Sementes Básicas, Canoinhas-SC are presented. 'IPR 82-Araucária' has been selected from clonal populations derived from crosses done in CIP, Lima, Peru, and introduced for field evaluations in 1984. High yield and field resistance to late blight have been the main features of the new cultivar, allowing to predict reductions as much as 50% in fungicides applications. Susceptibility to internal brown necrosis and common scab requires special farmer's attention in respect of planting density, liming, and irrigation management to decrease risks of incidence of these diseases. 'IPR 82-Araucária' is potentially suited for organic farming, and for growing in areas close to water resources.</text>

Com este artigo encerra-se a série 'Aspectos ecológicos de tripanossomíase americana'.The results of observations on triatominae bugs in three localities, one of them under to active annual regular surveillance and the other two which had undergone house treatment six months and one and half years before, respectively, are reported. Two of these localities were situated in the dispersal center region of Panstrongylus megistus, and the third in the dispersal center region of Triatoma sordida. At two-monthly periods each area was submitted to dwelling inspection in the search for triatominae bugs in indoor and peridomiciliary environments. The results reached confirmed the slow speed of reinfestation by P. megistus, in apparent contrast with that of T. sordida. This latter producing colonies at a high rate in peridomiciliary environments. No difference was found between intra and peridomiciliary environments in their attraction for this bug. P. megistus reinfestation was frequently found associated with natural infection. Reintroduction of Triatoma infestans into dwellings was associated with human population mobility. The peridomiciliary colonization of T. sordida allowed the study of the development of these colonies, and remarkably similar results to those found in the experimental fowl houses previously reported on was obtained. The presence of Rhodnius neglectus was reported in all three localities and, though not prominent, it is necessary to pay some attention to this species as potential house invader.</text>
