The prevalence of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) has been historically associated with the degradation of the environment in urban and agricultural areas. The ATL is an illness of obliged notification, remaining endemic in Maringá. The aim of this work was to identify the nature of the cases of Leishmaniose occurred in the residential complex Inocente Vila Nova Júnior and the actions carried out for the vector’s control. The ATL samples were collected with the data base of the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde, Coordenação Municipal de Epidemiologia, Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN), from 2001 to 2003. After the investigation of the cases, considered autochthonous, combat actions against the vector in the local bush area. Results show that the urban area, considered as reference and sociability between men and nature, starts to have the quality of aggravating space when it creates life forms inside of a non-balanced system that can infect the men. Thus, it is important to have scientific studies and planning for these areas, protecting its functions and impacts to the society.</text>

The quality of poultry manure composts obtained from composting heaps were evaluated, in the following treatments: 1) without gypsum and turning; 2) without gypsum and with turning; 3) with gypsum and turning; 4) with gypsum and without turning. The quality of composts was evaluated with the Department of Agricultural (DA) standards established to the occurrence of eggs and grubs of helminthes, Salmonella sp, fecal and total coliforms, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Se, C, N, humidity, C:N and C:CEC rations, and pH. The quality of composts from the turned heaps agrees with the DA standards, except the C content, which was lower. In the composts obtained from heaps with gypsum addition and without turner, the content of this element was higher than the minimum required but the values of N, eggs of helminthes, and water content did not meet the DA standards. The metal content of the composts was low, with the exception of Cd, but it was due to the high content of this metal in the manure used to make the gypsum heaps. This additive decreased the pH value of the composts and increased the N content of the no turned heaps. Considering all evaluated attributes, the best composts were obtained from the turned heaps.</text>

Jasmonic acid (JA) and its jasmonate derivatives are endogenous hormones produced by numerous plant species that interfere on plant defense mechanism and act as stress signaling. The aim of this work was to compare the plant growth regulator potential of a fermented broth, obtained by the fermentation of the filamentous fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina, containing jasmonates to the action of the jasmonic acid used as standard. Selected seeds of Capsicum frutescens (pimenta malagueta) and Physalis angulata (camapú) were planted in soil containing mineral and organic fertilizer. Thirty seven days after germination seedlings were sprinkled with two different concentrations of JA (25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1) and with the jasmonate-containing fermented broth (corresponding to 50 mg L-1 of JA). Water was used as control. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a completely randomized block design, with three replications with five plants and treatments applied to a 4x1 factorial (1 control; 2 doses of JA and 1 dose of filtrated). The evaluation of seedlings was performed 80 days after scattering with JA and the fermented broth. Capsicum control plants produced 6.4 fruits/plant, while plants sprinkled with 25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1 JA produced 7.2 and 9. 2 fruits/plant respectively and plants sparged with the fermented broth produced 11.7 fruits/plant. Moreover, Physalis control plants produced 10.5 buds/plant and when sprinkled with 25.0 and 50.0 mg L-1 JA produced 15.5 and 16.0 buds/plant respectively. Plantlets sparged with the fermented broth doubled the production of buds/plant (23.0) when compared to the control. The results obtained validate the growth regulator potential of JA and of the fermented broth on the tested plants, evidenced by the increased production of fruits and flower buds by the plant species tested. Thus, the fermented broth of the fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina is a lower cost alternative to commercially obtained JA.</text>
