This study examined the public’s preventive behavioral responses during the 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreak in Korea and the influencing factors. Two cross-sectional telephone surveys were conducted by Gallup Korea using random digit dialing in June 2015 (n = 2004). The main outcome variables were nonpharmaceutical preventive measures (survey (1): Measures for reducing transmission (handwashing, face masks); and survey (2): Measures for avoiding contact with others). Multiple logistic regression was used to identify the factors influencing preventive behaviors. In survey (1), 60.3% of respondents reported more frequent handwashing and 15.5% reported wearing face masks at least once due to the MERS-CoV epidemic. In survey (2), 41−56% of respondents reported practicing avoidance measures. The concerned group was more likely to practice reducing transmission measures (odds ratio (OR) 4.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3−6.1) and avoidance measures (OR = 9.6; 95% CI, 6.4−14.4). The respondents who had low trust in president or ruling party had a higher practice rate of reducing transmission measures (OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.2−2.6) and avoidance measures (OR = 2.1; 95% CI, 1.2−3.5). Cooperative prevention measures need appropriated public concern based on effective risk communication.

OBJECTIVES This study was performed to investigate the relationship between community residents’ infection sensitivity and their levels of preventive behaviors during the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea. METHODS Seven thousands two hundreds eighty one participants from nine areas in Gyeonggi-do including Pyeongtaek, the origin of the outbreak in 2015 agreed to participate in the survey and the data from 6,739 participants were included in the final analysis. The data on the perceived infection sensitivity were subjected to cluster analysis. The levels of stress, reliability/practice of preventive behaviors, hand washing practice and policy credibility during the outbreak period were analyzed for each cluster. RESULTS Cluster analysis of infection sensitivity due to the MERS outbreak resulted in classification of participants into four groups: the non-sensitive group (14.5%), social concern group (17.4%), neutral group (29.1%), and overall sensitive group (39.0%). A logistic regression analysis found that the overall sensitive group with high sensitivity had higher stress levels (17.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 13.77 to 23.00), higher reliability on preventive behaviors (5.81; 95% CI, 4.84 to 6.98), higher practice of preventive behaviors (4.53; 95% CI, 3.83 to 5.37) and higher practice of hand washing (2.71; 95% CI, 2.13 to 3.43) during the outbreak period, compared to the non-sensitive group. CONCLUSIONS Infection sensitivity of community residents during the MERS outbreak correlated with gender, age, occupation, and health behaviors. When there is an outbreak in the community, there is need to maintain a certain level of sensitivity while reducing excessive stress, as well as promote the practice of preventive behaviors among local residents. In particular, target groups need to be notified and policies need to be established with a consideration of the socio-demographic characteristics of the community.

The Cuban health system, through community performance with students and professors, along with preventive work, allowed to mitigate the risk that this disease constitutes for the human health. To such effects, it is briefly commented on the teaching organization in the University of Medical Sciences from Santiago de Cuba, where, in a virtual way and under different conditions, a new teaching scenario was designed to guarantee the ending of the subjects that are not part of the basic curriculum in the existing plan of study, according to the careers and the different academic years.

En este estudio, describimos la dieta de Scinax fuscomarginatus mediante la evaluación de su posible dieta generalista con respectoa la disponibilidad de presas en su entorno. Estudiamos la dieta deScinax fuscomarginatus mediante el análisis del contenido estomacal de 48 ejemplares capturados en el municipio de Campo Grande del estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, en Brasil. Encontramos ocho categorías de presas, de las cuales Hemiptera fue la más abundante y representativa. El índice de selectividad de las dos presas más importantes varió inversamente entre las estaciones seca y lluviosa. La disponibilidad de presas también varió entre las estaciones. Estos resultados sugieren la existencia de una pauta temporal en la composición de las presas y en la dieta de Scinax fuscomarginatus.

Key to understand predator choice is the relationship between predator and prey abundance. There are few studies related to prey selection and availability. Such an approach is still current, because the ability to predict aspects of the diet in response to changes in prey availability is one of the major problems of trophic ecology. The general objective of this study was to evaluate prey selection by two species (Characidium cf. vidali and Pimelodella lateristriga) of the Mato Grosso stream, in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Benthos and fishes were collected in June, July and September of 2006 and January and February of 2007. Fish were collected with electric fishing techniques and benthos with a surber net. Densities of benthic organisms were expressed as the number of individuals per/m2. After sampling, the invertebrates were fixed in 90% ethanol, and, in the laboratory, were identified to the lowest taxonomical level. Approximately, seventy individuals from each species were selected randomly in each month. Fishes were fixed in 10% formalin in the field and transferred to 70o GL ethanol in the laboratory. Fishes had their stomachs removed for subsequent analysis. Fish diet was described according to the numeric frequency method. The Manly Electivity I ndex was applied in order to verify prey selection. The most abundant families in both benthos and diet of both fish species were the same, indicating that these species consume mainly most abundant prey in the environment. We concluded that prey selection occurs even for preys that had small abundance in the environment . However, it is the availability of the macroinvertebrate resources that determines the major composition of items in diet of fish, demonstrating that the abundance is the factor that most influences the choice of prey. Actualmente, este enfoque se mantiene, debido a que uno de los principales problemas de la ecología trófica es la capacidad de predecir los aspectos de los hábitos alimentarios en respuesta a los cambios en la disponibilidad de las presas. El objetivo general de este estudio fue evaluar la seleccion de las presas en los especies (Characidium cf. vidali y Pimelodella lateristriga) del arroyo Mato Grosso en Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. Se recolectaron bentos y peces en junio, Julio y septiembre 2006 y en enero y febrero 2007. Los peces fueron recolectados con técnicas de pesca eléctrica y los del bentos con una red surber. La densidad de los organismos bentónicos se expresó como el número de individuos por m2. Luego del muestreo, los invertebrados se fijaron en 90% de etanol y se identificaron con el nivel taxonómico más bajo. Los peces fueron fijados con 10% de formalina en el campo y transferidos a etanol 70o GL en el laboratorio. Los estómagos de los peces fueron extirpados para su posterior análisis. Las familias más abundantes del bentos y las dietas de los peces fueron las mismas, lo que indica que estas especies consumen principalmente la presa más abundante en el ambiente. Se concluye que la selección de la presa se produce incluso para aquellas presas con una abundancia pequeña en el entorno. Sin embargo, es la disponibilidad de los recursos de los macroinvertebrados la que determina la mayor composición en términos de la dieta de los peces, demostrando que la abundancia es el factor que se ve más influenciado por la elección de presas

This study was designed to evaluate prey selection (type and size) by the octocoral Carijoa riisei at Porto de Galinhas beach, Northeast Brazil, relating prey availability in plankton with the content inside polyps. Diatoms and cyanophytes were the predominant items found in both polyp gastric cavity and plankton. A correlation between prey abundance in the plankton and in the gastric cavity of C. riisei polyps was observed. Mastogloia sp. showed the highest positive electivity index (0.99). Benthonic items were found, with 0.51% of total consumed preys. The size amplitude of prey items in the plankton was similar to those found inside the polyps, although the mean prey size in the polyps (112.7 µm) was significantly lower than the value found in the plankton (240.5 µm). Thus, the study indicates some size selectivity in this species or at least size limitation. From the results, we concluded that the octocoral C. riisei is an opportunistic polyphagous species in the Brazilian northeast coast, showing suspensivorous passive filtering feeding habit with a preference for small prey items and evidencing its important ecological role in the reefal ecosystem as responsible for bidirectional energy transference between pelagic zones and the benthos.Este estudo foi desenvolvido para avaliar a seletividade de presas (tipo e tamanho) do octocoral Carijoa riisei na praia de Porto de Galinhas, nordeste do Brasil, relacionando a disponibilidade de presas no plâncton com o conteúdo gástrico dos pólipos. Diatomáceas e Cianofíceas foram os itens de presas mais abundantes tanto na cavidade gástrica dos pólipos quanto no plâncton. Foi observada uma correlação entre a abundância de presas no plâncton e na cavidade gástrica dos pólipos de C. riisei. Mastogloia sp. apresentou o maior índice de seletividade positiva (0,99). Foram encontrados organismos bentônicos, totalizando 0,51% do total de presas consumidas. A amplitude de tamanho das presas no plâncton foi similar à da cavidade gástrica dos pólipos, no entanto, o tamanho médio das presas nos pólipos (112,7 µm) foi significativamente menor que a do plâncton (240,5 µm). Assim, o estudo indica certa seletividade de tamanho nesta espécie ou, pelo menos, limitação de tamanho. A partir dos resultados, conclui-se que o octocoral C. riisei é uma espécie polífaga oportunista na costa nordestina brasileira, com hábito alimentador suspensívoro passivo, preferindo itens de presas com pequeno tamanho e evidenciando ter importante papel ecológico em ecossistemas recifais como responsável pela transferência bidirecional de energia entre as zonas pelágica e bentônica.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a rapidly evolving global pandemic for which more than a thousand clinical trials have been registered to secure therapeutic effectiveness, expeditiously. Most of these are single-center non-randomized studies rather than multi-center, randomized controlled trials. Single-arm trials have several limitations and may be conducted when spontaneous improvement is not anticipated, small placebo effect exists, and randomization to a placebo is not ethical. In an emergency where saving lives takes precedence, it is ethical to conduct trials with any scientifically proven design, however, safety must not be compromised. A phase II or III trial can be conducted directly in a pandemic with appropriate checkpoints and stopping rules. COVID-19 has two management paradigms- antivirals, or treatment of its complications. Simultaneous assessment of two different treatments can be done using 2 × 2 factorial schema. World Health Organization’s SOLIDARITY trial is a classic example of the global research protocol which can evaluate the preferred treatment to combat COVID-19 pandemic. Short of that, a trial design must incorporate the practicality of the intervention used, and an appropriate primary endpoint which should ideally be a clinical outcome. Collaboration between institutions is needed more than ever to successfully execute and accrue in randomized trials.

Uvod: Za uspešno, samozavestno in učinkovito spoprijemanje s spremenjenimi vlogami in zagotavljanje ustrezne pomoči prizadetim morajo biti tudi medicinske sestre v času izrednih razmer ustrezno usposobljene in pripravljene. Namen raziskave je bil prevesti in prilagoditi merski instrument Lestvica profesionalnih kompetenc medicinskih sester v izrednih razmerah (LPKMS-IR) ter oceniti njegove psihometrične lastnosti. Metode: Uporabljen je bil kvantitativni metodološki raziskovalni dizajn. Lestvica je bila testirana na priložnostnem vzorcu 118 medicinskih sester. V trifaznem procesu prilagoditve in validacije se je poleg vsebinske skladnosti preverjalo notranjo konsistentnost, stabilnost in povezanost spremenljivk ter faktorsko strukturo. Rezultati: Faktorska analiza je podala model s tremi faktorji, pri čemer prvi faktor Temeljne kompetence medicinskih sester v izrednih razmerah pojasni 36,53 % celotne variance. Rezultati kažejo tudi zelo visoko povezanost med faktorji (p < 0,001) in stopnjo zanesljivosti pri celotni lestvici LPKMS-IR (Cronbach α = 0,937). Diskusija in zaključek: Rezultati potrjujejo, da je slovenska različica lestvice LPKMS-IR veljaven in zanesljiv merski instrument. Ob pomanjkanju ustreznih merskih instrumentov omogoča identifikacijo kompetenc medicinskih sester v izrednih razmerah ter nekatere okoliščine njihovih vlog. Ugotovitve nakazujejo tudi potrebo po nekaterih spremembah izobraževanja za zdravstveno nego in ciljanem raziskovanju tistih skupin v zdravstveni negi, ki se po pričakovanjih pogosteje srečujejo z izrednimi situacijami.
