The inexistence of organic seeds in the market and the absence of information constitute a difficulty for the organic production. The green fertilizer efficiency (GF) was evaluated, of organic compound (OC), and biofertilizer (B) in carrot production and seeds quality, compared to conventional fertilizer (CF-control), through the treatments: 1) CF; 2, GF+B via soil; 3) GF+B via plant; 4) OC+B via soil; 5) OC+B via plant; 6) OC+GF+B via soil and 7) OC+GF+B via plant. Higher morphological values (height, length and diameter), of germination and vigor were given by treatment 5, while production and total soluble solids reached higher gradients when growing plants with treatment 4, upper data of treatment 1. Treatment 3 resulted in root production with lower number of branches nematode. Carrots of preview treatments 2 and 6 were classified in a lower size. Decomposition of GF, linked to B applied to the plant, may have given a higher carrot resistance to nematodes and better commercial classification. Organic treatments resulted in better roots and seed quality and higher production.</text>

This research aimed to study the economic performance of the family farming at Santa Tereza settlement, Porangatu, North of Goiás. Data were collected interviewing 45 families, in the 2001/2002 growing season. Factor analysis and a multiple regression model were used to explain the business profitability. The Santa Tereza settlement presents low rainfall, scarce water sources and a small market for their products. Farmers received government investment and operating capital, but did not receive technical assistance or human capital training. Their main activities are dairy, swine, poultry, rice and corn production. The small amount of working capital induces the adoption of labor intensive technology and small production scale (47.9% of the area is cultivated), and, as a consequence, 77.5% of the family labor is not used. This explains the low productivity levels and the high risk of the annual crops, although, all agricultural activities presented positive gross margin amounting to R$ 2,188.00 per year. Dairy was the only activity which presented positive net income. Retirement income represents 65% of the family income. Factor and regression analyses showed that technical efficiency, use of land resources, and family labor are directly related to better economic results, while annual crops and hired labor have negative effect on farm profitability.</p> <p class='western'>KEY-WORDS: Land reform settlement; production and income; factor analysis.</p></text>

A characterization of the process of organic agriculture production of Calendula officinalis L. in the State of Santa Catarina is presented, evidencing particularities and discrepancies contrasting to the models already described in specialized literature, by field visits, participative observations and interviews with a medicinal plant producer. The main particularities identified were the health in the agricultural family, demonstrated by the practice of organic culture, besides pest control and the handling of production. The main evidenced problems or divergences were: soil characteristics; period of the marigold planting and its following stages, such as transplanting and flowering. Aspects of the crop were conflicting as for the period of the day indicated for the procedure, as well as the absence of information from the producer about the existence of other government incentives to the agricultural section. It is recommended to the rural extensions and/or competent institutions to seek for guiding the organic producers of marigold to promote adequate practices for the cultivation of this medicinal species.</text>

Organic production: consumer preference and potential tracking in Fortaleza – CEAbstract: This study aimed to investigate the profile of consumers of organic products as well as their way of acquisition and which preferences that influence when deciding on the purchase. This study was developed during the VIII FECEAF - Fair Cearense Family Agriculture - Fortaleza, Ceará, in July 2015, totaling 100 sample subjects. objective questions were answered for the consumer profile, where the females (51%), the age group 21-30 (39%) and high school (48%) of that audience got more representative. There was still little knowledge about organic products among respondents (61%), with television as the main source of information on the subject (34%). With regard to consumer habits and how to purchase this type of product, 54% of respondents choose it to present a better quality when compared to conventional, 43% consume it every day and 41% usually buy them in supermarkets . Already familiar consumption habits obtained a significant percentage (87%) in all family members making use of organic consumer products. As for attractiveness, 53% report that the absence of pesticides makes them more attractive organic products. Among the most consumed organic, fruits (53%) and vegetables (29%) were most prominent.
