The irrigation management in areas under water scarcity is imperative to increase the water use efficiency particularly in areas with salinization risk and high atmospheric demands. In this study, effect of mulching and irrigation intervals was evaluated using moderately saline water on cabbage yield and on its related variables in an alluvial valley in the semiarid. The experimental design was in random blocks using a 3 x 2 factorial scheme, with 4 replications, adopting irrigation application intervals of 12, 24 and 48 h, and a leaching fraction of 20%, and considering mulching presence or absence on the soil. It was verified that productivities have been affected by the irrigation interval and by mulching. The maximum water use efficiency was obtained with irrigation frequency of 12 h and mulching adoption, corresponding to 110.49 Mg ha-1 mm-1, associated to a lower soil moisture variation along the experiment. Mulching relevance was highlighted for the irrigation interval equal to 48 h, contributing to control moisture losses, and to keep cabbage yield.</text>

The objective of this work was to assess organic and mineral fertilization effects on growth and yield of castor bean (Ricinus communis), applying doses of manure, P, K and micronutrients on a chemically poor soil, under low water supply, in a randomized block design with three replications, and factorial arrangement of 3x2+4 (three manure doses, absence or presence of mineral fertilizer, plus four manure, mineral fertilizer and micronutrients combinations). Values for mean yield were: 163.7 kg ha-1, for treatment without any fertilization, and 596.9, 988.1 and 1,172.5 kg ha-1, for treatments with organic, mineral and organic + mineral, respectively. P is the most important nutrient for increasing yield and oil content. Low water supply limits mineralization and nutrients releasing from organic amendments.</text>

The cabbage crop is cultivated in small areas and requires much labor, this crop being mostly driven by family farmers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of boron levels in different cultivars of cabbage in western Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. The experiment was carried out at the Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, Unidade Universitária de Aquidauana. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial scheme 2 x 5, two cultivars and five doses of boron, with four replications. We evaluated the following features: boron foliar plant area, plant height, number of outer leaves, fresh weight of outer leaves, leaf content of boron, plant area, plant height, number of outer leaves, fresh weight of outer leaves, dry weight of outer leaves, classification according to head weight, compactness and yield per hectare. The cultivar 60 Dias showed higher values for yield components and consequently greater productivity. The application of boron influences linearly in the boron content of leaves, head diameter and number of inner leaves. The boron levels interfered the yield of cabbage, the maximum dose for '60 Dias' being 7.2 kg ha-1 and the minimum necessary dose for the cv. Chato de Quintal being 1.06 kg ha-1.</text>

The objective of this work was to evaluate yield and nutritional status of organically cultivated Santa Cruz okra as a function of planting densities and doses of swine biofertilizer. The experiment was carried out at the EPAMIG Experimental Farm, in Oratorios-MG, Brazil, from 16/10/2007 to 22/02/2008. The experiment was arranged in randomized blocks, with four replications, in a 2 x 5 factorial, with two plant populations and five doses of biofertilizer obtained by the fermentation of liquid swine waste. The two populations were 23809 and 35714 plants.ha-1, obtained in the 1.4 x 0.30 m spacing with a plant per hole and 1.4 x 0.40 m with two plants per hole. Biofertilizer doses were: 0; 6; 12; 24 and 48 m3.ha-1, with 80% applied in furrow 15 days before transplantation and 20% top-dressing at 30 days after seedling transplantation. The characteristics evaluated included nutrient leaf content, SPAD index, plant height, number of stems and production of commercial and non-commercial fruits. The use o the swine biofertilizer gave plants with a good nutritional status. The SPAD index correlated positively with N leaf content, with the highest concentrations at the highest doses of the swine biofertilizer, mainly in the smallest plant population. The number and commercial fruit production per plant were larger when a smaller plant population was used. The highest yield achieved in the population of 35714 plants ha-1 was 31.23 ton ha-1, and in the population of 23809 plant.ha-1 was 21.9 ton ha-1, both at the highest dose of biofertilizer. The highest commercial yield of okra fruits was obtained with the largest plant population.</text>

The present work aimed to evaluate the application of plant growth regulators, associate or not to liquid fertilizers, on the ratoon sprouting and productivity of sugarcane genotypes. The experiment was carried out near Jaú city (SP), in a Eutroferric Red Latosol. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks with factorial treatment structure 5x5, constituted by five genotypes (IAC87-3396, IAC91-2218, IAC91-4216, IAC91-5155 and IACSP93-6006) and five plant growth regulators treatments associated or not to liquid fertilizers (Stimulate®, 0,5L ha-1; Stimulate®, 0,5L ha-1, + Starter N®, 3,0L ha-1; Stimulate®, 0,5L ha-1, + Starter N®, 3,0L ha-1, + Cellerate®, 0,5L ha-1; Ethephon, 3,0L ha-1, and control), with four replicates. The application of the products occurred at 70 days after the fourth crop harvest. The attributes tillering, stalk productivity, sugar productivity, fiber, pol % cane and total sugar recoverable were evaluated. Ethephon provided better tillering, but this response was dependent of the genotype. The highest tiller number caused by Ethephon did not mean the highest productivity. The application of Stimulate® and liquid fertilizers did not provide effects on the sugarcane technological quality. There was increase of cane productivity and sugar productivity with the use of plant growth regulator Stimulate® for all genotypes, with or without supplementation of liquid fertilizer, being an indicative for increasing the sugarcane longevity.</text>

The objective of this work was to evaluate forage nutritive value by determining the crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) from forage submitted to some agro-ecologic practices. Two paddocks, each one with 0.15 ha, were used in the evaluation. The elephantgrass was planted in 2001, spaced 3 m between rows. Mixture of oat and ryegrass during the winter period and spontaneous growing species in the summer period has been planted/left between the rows. It was applied organic fertilizer in the rate of 150 kg/ha of N. Seven grazing cycles were carried out during the experimental period from 04/24/2004 to 05/05/2005. Holstein cows receiving 3.5 kg/daily complementary concentrate feed were used in the evaluation. The initial forage mass, the botanical composition, and the structural components of elephantgrass pastures were evaluated. Hand-plucked samples were collected to analyze the nutritive value. The experimental design utilized was randomized blocks, with two replicates (paddocks) and seven treatments (grazings along the time). The best results for nutritive value were found during the winter period. Negative correlations between CP with IVDMD and positive between NDF with elephantgrass leaf lamina biomass were found. The elephantgrass pasture, managed under agro-ecologic principles, showed high nutritional value and productivity, both during the summer and during the winter, making the animal production more sustainable along the year.</text>
