Cases of H7N9 human infections emerged in eastern China in 2013 and immediately raised pandemic concerns as historically, pandemics were caused by the introduction of new subtypes into immunologically naïve human populations. Highly pathogenic H7N9 cases with severe disease were reported recently, indicating the continuing public health threat and the need for a prophylactic vaccine. Here we review the development of recombinant influenza virus-like particles (VLPs) as vaccines against H7N9 virus. Several approaches to vaccine development are reviewed including the expression of VLPs in mammalian, plant and insect cell expression systems. Although considerable progress has been achieved, including demonstration of safety and immunogenicity of H7N9 VLPs in the human clinical trials, the remaining challenges need to be addressed. These challenges include improvements to the manufacturing processes, as well as enhancements to immunogenicity in order to elicit protective immunity to multiple variants and subtypes of influenza virus. ABSTRACT This article describes the experiences of different groups of producers in the state of Jalisco and their efforts to develop an alternative development model. Beginning several years ago, they have transformed their conventional production systems into sustainable systems, and have also sought different commercialization channels. The groups have in common their participation in the Network of Sustainable Agricultural Alternatives (Red de Alternativas Sustentables Agropecuarias –RASA) in which different nongovernmental institutions and consumer groups also participate. This network may be considered a new social movement that aims to develop new schemes of sustainable rural development. We end with a discussion and conclusion in relation with the possibilities and challenges of the Network to strengthen sustainable agriculture and fair trade. The idea draws inspiration from the taxation of cigarettes for reasons of public health. Eating meat increases the risk of suffering from serious illnesses, and taxes would serve both as a deterrent and as a means to offset the associated healthcare costs imposed on society. There are further costs imposed by meat consumption: it sustains a major part of the demand of the world’s production of crops, which elevates their prices while much of the nutritional value of the crops used to produce meat is wasted. The production of meat is also highly polluting and it contributes very significantly to global warming. Finally, meat-eaters are in effect supporting the cruel practices commonly inflicted on the animals themselves.
