Both behavioral disturbances in bvFTD and cognitive impairment in AD contribute to caregiver burden. Objective: To investigate the impact of home confinement during the COVID-19 crisis on the burden of caregivers of bvFTD or AD patients. Methods: During the COVID-19 lockdown in France, neurologists and neuropsychologists from the Memory Center of Nantes Hospital conducted teleconsultations for 38 AD patients and 38 bvFTD patients as well as for their caregivers. During these consultations, caregivers were invited to rate the change in their burden during home confinement. They were also invited to rate behavioral or emotional changes in the patients during, compared with before, the confinement. Results: Twenty-two bvFTD caregivers and 14 AD caregivers experienced an increase in burden. For bvFTD caregivers, this increased burden occurred regardless of behavioral changes, while AD caregivers experienced an increased burden related to changes in patients’ neuropsychiatric symptoms. Among the whole cohort, 2 factors were associated with increased caregiver burden: behavioral change and bvFTD. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that during home confinement in the COVID-19 crisis, neuropsychiatric symptoms were the core factor that impacted caregiver burden in different ways depending on the disease. In order to connect with clients, most independent sex workers use adult service websites (ASWs), whose services range from simple advertising websites to platforms with both direct and indirect governance of workers. Although ASWs do not employ sex workers, their response to the pandemic has a large impact on sex workers’ financial and physical wellbeing. This effect is even stronger among migrant workers, who are less likely to qualify for, or be aware they qualify for, government support. This study reviews the response to COVID-19 of 45 of the leading ASWs in Britain, and triangulates the data with seven sex worker-led organisations. It shows a large variation in the responses of ASWs: the majority had no public response to the pandemic at all, a minority took intentional steps to support workers or donated to hardship funds for sex workers, and at least one ASW reduced their safety features during the pandemic. These findings illustrate that while most ASWs do not acknowledge the influence they have over the working practices of their service users and the shift of economic risk to them, some recognised the potential that their platforms have to support sex workers during crises. The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to examine the impact of psychological characteristics on human adaptation under uncertainty. Hardiness, which is still controversial for its role in maintaining human mental, physical, and social health, is such a psychological characteristic. Methods. To test the hypothesis that individuals with different levels of hardiness have different attitudes towards the current COVID-19 pandemic, the present study used the Hardiness Survey by S. Maddi (modified by E. N. Osin and E. I. Rasskazova) and a special questionnaire to assess various aspects of the pandemic situation, including its characteristics and impact on various spheres of life, fears, and possibilities for coping (using a 11-point Likert scale). The study was conducted during self-isolation using the Google Form (N = 421; age 18–78 years, mean age = 40.3 ± 12.6 years; 81 % females). Results. Most Russians perceived the pandemic situation as a challenge to their capabilities. The high-risk group comprised 17 % of respondents, which indicates the need for targeted psychological assistance aimed at psychological education. High hardy Russians recognize the uncertainty and complexity of the pandemic situation, and consider it controllable. For the low hardiness group, this situation is highly uncertain, complex, unpredictable, and uncontrollable, affecting physical activity and the quality of social contacts. Besides fears for their loved ones, fear of the future is pronounced among respondents of this group. Discussion. The findings from this study are in agreement with the idea of hardiness as the ability to withstand stressful situations, while maintaining internal balance without reducing performance in activities, which indicates the predictive value of this construct. Martin Weller famously claimed in 2007 that “the VLE is dead”. This provocation positioned the VLE as an object of history, forcing us to consider its past, present and future. This notion of historical mapping is important as many educational technologies that failed to deliver on their promises can be easily forgotten. Hence, we sought to develop a short history of VLE metaphors. Using a defined search and selection strategy we selected 30 metaphors spanning a 15-year period from 2004 to 2019 derived from a variety of sources ranging from social media to scholarly publications. We first arranged the metaphors according to a chronological timeline. Next we sought to unpack their significance by thematically analysing them using the notion of metaphorical concepts. Through this thematic analysis, six organizing metaphorical concepts were generated: Straitjacket, Behemoth, Digital Carpark, Safe Space, Smorgasbord and Pathfinder. We then used these metaphorical concepts as a lens, to map and explore historical developments and debates over the past two decades of educational technology. As the world scrambles to go online during the COVID-19 pandemic there has never been a more important time to remember and reflect upon digital learning history. Through this work we contribute to the history of educational technology by remembering its metaphors and what they have taught us. After we had navigated these historical seas, we noticed that the VLE was still here, as a limpet resolutely awaiting the next wave.
