From the 70’s, this design became consolidated in Brazil and other countries because of policies and strategies by states and private groups. However, some doubts has been raised on its environmental and socioeconomic issues, in special for family farming. This study aimed to contribute by identifying changes and resistance in agricultural structures, systems and demographic aspects of this model and its adoption by farmers. It was carried out in the state of Paraná - Brazil, within the microregion of Toledo and in the northern pioneer area, which represent the history and diversity of this state about socioeconomic and human aspects, as well as technical development. It was based on statistics of agricultural censuses (1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1996 and 2006), population censuses (1970, 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010) and municipal agricultural production data (1980-2012). Data from both areas were compared to each other and analyzed in face of state changes. There has been a decrease in farming properties and rural population, with an outstanding decline in the number of young people and women. Moreover, results showed a large reduction of properties with 20 to 50 ha, and an increase in those of up to 2 ha. Such decline is due to technological standard changes throughout the period, as well as recent grants offered to rural areas, as housing and leisure spaces. Both regions showed expansion of soybean plantations, but integrating distinctively to agriculture and, finally, family farming continuity, despite the intense changes. Unfortunately, coral reef dynamics have been poorly documented at any temporal scale in the Southern Caribbean. Through the 'National Monitoring System of Coral Reefs in Colombia' (Spanish acronym: SIMAC), we assessed 32 permanent plots at different depth levels in six reefs areas of the Colombian Caribbean from 1998 to 2004. Temporal trends in coral and algal cover were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. The model included the effect of depth levels (a fixed effect), monitoring plots (a random effect) as a nested factor within depths, and time (repeated factor). We found high spatial variability in major benthic components. Overall means indicated that algae were the most abundant biotic component in nearly all areas, ranging from 30.3% at Rosario to 53.3% at San Andrés. Live coral cover varied considerably from 10.1% at Santa Marta up to 43.5% at Urabá. Coral and algae cover per se are not always accurate reef indicators and therefore they need supplementary information. Temporal analyses suggested relative stability of coral and algal cover along the study but the causes for the observed trends were rarely identified. A significant decrease (p=0.042) in coral cover was only identified for some monitoring plots in Tayrona-time x plot (depth level) interaction, and importantly, few coral species explained this trend. Significant increase (p=0.005) in algal cover was observed over time for most plots in Rosario. Temporal trajectories in algal cover were influenced by depth-significant time x depth interaction-in San Andrés (increase, p=0.004) and Urabá (decrease, p=0.027). Algae trends were mainly explained by changes in algal turfs. Monitoring programs must focus on the mechanisms mediating the changes, in particular those concerning coral recovery and reef resilience in the current context of climate change. Rev. Biol. As pequenas propriedades agrícolas são encarregadas de produzir para a maioria da população e para própria subsistência familiar. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho revelar a importância das ações de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (ATER) para permanência de pequenos agricultores no campo, devido ao seu papel na produção de alimentos e na geração de emprego. O estudo foi realizado no município de São Bento do Una/Pernambuco, o qual recebe assistência técnica do Instituto Agronômico de Pernambuco (IPA). Foram feitas entrevistas com roteiro semiestruturado aos agricultores familiares e aos técnicos do IPA, além de observações diretas englobando dados qualitativos e quantitativos. Foi percebida uma necessidade de maior atenção do governo, com mais políticas públicas para que os serviços, projetos e programas possam ser melhores desenvolvidos. Nesse sentido, os agricultores familiares necessitam de ações de ATER mais efetivas e que tragam melhores condições de trabalho e desenvolvimento para o meio rural do município.
