Se destaca su labor en Cuba, donde realizó siete viajes, en los últimos cinco años de su vida, los cuales totalizaron un año y dos meses, realizando exploraciones prácticamente por todo el país, principalmente con el Hno León (J.S.Sauget). Como resultados florísticos describió 24 nuevas especies y cinco nuevas variedades en 11 familias, las recolectas se encuentran en el herbario del Jardín Botánico de Montréal, Canadá (MV), con 4853 especímenes, de 2195 especies de 171 familias, otra colección en el herbario del Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática, La Habana (HAC) y en varias importantes instituciones. Le fueron dedicados un género y 11 especies de diez familias. Los resultados fitogeográficos se encuentran en tres volúmenes de los “Itinerarios Botánicos en la Isla de Cuba”, con un aproximado de 1100 páginas y unas 650 ilustraciones (mapas, esquemas de vegetación y fotos) con descripciones de las  localidades visitadas, en particular de las formaciones vegetales, los principales elementos florísticos y comentarios sobre su distribución y usos. Por su contribución a la ciencia cubana le fue otorgada en 1944 la Orden al Mérito “Carlos Manuel de Céspedes” en el grado de Oficial por el Ministerio de Estado de Cuba. Palabras claves: Marie-Victorin, Itinerarios botánicos ABSTRACT A synthesis of the life and work of Brother Marie-Victorin (Dr. Conrad Kirouac, 1885-1944) is presented. He travels to Cuba in seven times, in his last five years, totalizing a year and two months, with Brother León (J.S.Sauget). The floristic results were the description of 24 new species and five new varieties belonging to 11 families; the collection is in the  herbarium of the Botanical Garden of Montréal, Canadá (MV), with 4853 sheets, from 2195 species, belonging to 171 families; another collection is in the: Ecological and Systematic Institute, La Habana (HAC); other collections are in various important institutions. The phytogeographycal results are in three volumes: “Botanical Itineraries in the Island of Cuba”, with 1100 pages, nearly 650 figures (maps, vegetation schemes and photos) with descriptions of the vegetation types, floristic elements, their distributions and uses. Se trata de un proceso, de transformación multidimensional y multiescalar, que presenta rupturas y continuidades con la expansión del anterior modelo de la agroindustria orientado al mercado interno a partir de regulaciones estatales. Según nuestras investigaciones desde la Comunidad de Estudios Campesinos (CEC) pudimos identificar cinco dispositivos según los cuales el agronegocio se territorializa: económico-financiero, jurídico-normativo y de políticas públicas, legitimación ideológica, formación y desarrollo tecnológico, coercitivo (CEC, 2009). Nos interesa abonar a la caracterización del despliegue del último de los dispositivos del agronegocio: el de la violencia. En esta oportunidad presentamos un análisis del conjunto de los asesinatos o muertes de campesinos e indígenas en conflictos de tierra en Argentina, desde la desregulación económica hasta la actualidad. En este sentido nos proponemos indagar el significado de la violencia sobre los cuerpos de campesinos/as e indígenas que registramos desde 1991. Nuestra hipótesis se orienta a explicar la vinculación entre la violencia rural y la desterritorialización de la emergente intencionalidad campesina. Entre os problemas enfrentados pelos agricultores estão a dificuldade de seu controle com o uso de inseticidas devido à sua preferência pelas partes internas das flores e a evolução de resistência aos agroquímicos. O objetivo da pesquisa foi caracterizar a resistência de F. occidentalis a espinosade e avaliar a frequência de insetos resistentes ao inseticida, em áreas comerciais de crisântemo de diversos municípios do Estado de São Paulo. Seleções para resistência a espinosade foram realizadas em laboratório, utilizando-se uma população de F. occidentalis, coletada em 2007 de um cultivo comercial de crisântemo em Campinas (SP). No decorrer de sete seleções para resistência, a CL50 de espinosade passou de 8,41 mg i.a. L-1 para 1111 mg i.a. L-1. Comparando-se a linhagem resistente (R) (selecionada) e a suscetível (S), a razão de resistência (CL50 R/CL50 S) atingiu valores de ≈280 vezes. Estabeleceu-se uma concentração discriminatória de 98 mg i.a. L-1 para o monitoramento da resistência de F. occidentalis a espinosade. O monitoramento foi realizado coletando-se 19 populações do tripes em áreas comerciais de crisântemo no Estado de São Paulo. Os bioensaios foram realizados com ninfas de segundo ínstar de F. occidentalis, colocadas em arenas de folha de feijão. As aplicações de espinosade, na sua concentração discriminatória, foram realizadas sobre as ninfas em torre de Potter. Os resultados indicaram alta variabilidade entre as populações com relação à suscetibilidade a espinosade. Foram observadas populações com até 40,7% de insetos resistentes. Este é o primeiro relato de resistência de F. occidentalis a espinosade no Brasil. Solo el 3% de las aves actuales consumen plantas como fuente de energía. Tanto la composición química de las plantas como las restricciones asociadas al vuelo y digestión en aves pueden explicar el reducido número de pequeños endotermos, como las aves, que son herbívoros. Nuestro objetivo es explicar como las aves herbívoras satisfacen sus requerimientos nutricionales y energéticos cuando consumen dietas extremadamente pobres. Para lo cual nos centramos en Phytotoma rara (Phytotomidae), posiblemente el ave herbívora más pequeña. Phytotoma rara presenta numerosas características, como el rápido tiempo de transito, un efectivo rompimiento de la pared celular, y la alta y constante actividad de las enzimas digestivas, que le permiten disponer de nutrientes y energía celulares, sin los costos energéticos asociados al desarrollo de estructuras anatómicas de fermentación bacteriana o lentos tiempos de transito. Estos son posiblemente adaptaciones cruciales en la evolución de la herbivoría en aves pequeñas.Herbivory is a rare strategy in birds. Only 3% of extant birds exploit plant material as an energy source. Both plant chemical composition and bird constraints associated to flight and digestion may explain why herbivory is so scarce in small endotherms such as birds. Here we tackle the question of how herbivorous birds meet energy/nutrient requirements when feeding on extremely poor diets. We focus on Phytotoma rara (Phytotomidae), possibly the smallest herbivorous bird. From our mini-review we conclude that several features such as the fast passage rates, an effective physical breakdown of cell walls, and constant and high activities of digestive enzymes make available the highly nutritious cell contents to the small herbivore, without the energy costs of anatomical structures for bacterial fermentation or slow passage rates. These are possible crucial adaptations in the evolution of herbivory in small birds. También se presentan algunos de los resultados obtenidos sobre las características de las angiospermas marinas presentes en aguas cubanas y sobre el estado de conservación del ecosistema de pastos marinos, formado principalmente por Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König.AbstractThe key results of the research about the macrophytobenthos of the Cuban marine shelf since 1973, at the Center for Marine Research at the University of Havana, are presented. Most are related with systematics of macroalgae, with 159 new records in the period. Phytobenthos ecology has been worked in the nine zones of the marine shelf. Some phytogeographical studies in Cuba and adjacent zones are reflected. Some of the results on the characteristics of marine angiosperms in Cuban waters and the condition of the seagrass ecosystem, composed mainly Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König, are also presented.
