As habitat change and large abundances of urban exploiter species have been related to changes in urban bird communities, we evaluated shifts in the bird communities in 2 small sized settlements, 1 with exploiter species and one without them. Our results show that bird species richness decreases when an area becomes urbanized, regardless of the presence of urban exploiters. While bird densities were low in the human settlement lacking urban exploiters, they were high in the other settlement due to the numbers of 2 urban exploiter species. Bird community evenness decreased from forests to the human settlement lacking urban exploiters, while decreased importantly in the settlement dominated by urban exploiters. The composition of bird communities was highly similar between forest conditions and the settlement lacking urban exploiters, and highly different to that from the settlement with urban exploiters. Our results thus suggest that when an area becomes urbanized, changes in habitat structure and their subsequent invasion by urban exploiter species generate a significant loss in bird species richness, favoring those species that can inhabit and exploit the new urban condition.La urbanización limita el número y tipo de especies que pueden colonizar a los ambientes urbanos. Debido a que los cambios de hábitat y las elevadas abundancias de especies explotadoras de ambientes urbanos han sido relacionadas con cambios en las comunidades de aves, en este trabajo evaluamos los cambios en las comunidades de aves en dos asentamientos humanos pequeños, uno con especies explotadoras y otro sin ellas. Nuestros resultados muestran que la riqueza de especies de aves disminuye cuando un área es urbanizada, sin importar la presencia de especies explotadoras. Las densidades de aves fueron bajas en asentamientos humanos sin especies explotadoras y fueron significativamente más altas en el otro asentamiento, básicamente debido a la presencia de dos especies explotadoras. La equitatividad de las comunidades decreció de los bosques a los asentamientos humanos. La composición de las comunidades de aves fue más similar entre las condiciones de bosque y el asentamiento sin especies explotadoras, y altamente diferente en relación con el asentamiento con especies explotadoras. Cruz Flores Description An account of the resource RESUMEN Una de las formas más eficientes de evaluar los cambios históricos en las propiedades de la cobertura vegetal a gran escala, es mediante índices de vegetación que derivan de las técnicas de percepción remota. Debido a la ausencia de información sobre las dinámicas de la vegetación en áreas protegidas cubanas, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo la evaluación de la variabilidad del índice de Campo Continuo de Vegetación en las formaciones vegetales naturales de 10 Parques Nacionales de Cuba, desde 2000 al 2010, así como de la variación futura de las condiciones bioclimáticas sobre estas formaciones. Se utilizó la capa producto anual de este índice, obtenida a partir del sensor MO DIS, que presenta una resolución de 250 m y que cuantifica el porcentaje de cobertura vegetal en un área determinada. Se generaron 1000 puntos aleatorios en cada área de estudio de los cuales se extrajo el valor del índice. El análisis multitemporal incluyó la comparación del porcentaje de cobertura de las formaciones vegetales durante 11 años consecutivos. Se estimaron los rangos ambientales de cada formación y se evaluaron los cambios de estos en dos proyecciones futuras: bc26bi50 y bc85bi50 para el escenario BCC-CSM1-1 correspondiente a 2050. En el período evaluado, la cobertura vegetal total varió ligeramente, en cinco Parques Nacionales aumentó y en cinco disminuyó. En cada Parque Nacional la cobertura de las formaciones vegetales se mantuvo constante con pequeñas fluctuaciones. No se detectaron cambios significativos entre los rangos ambientales actuales y las proyecciones futuras. Conocer los cambios históricos ocurridos en los ecosistemas terrestres de Cuba, así como, las posibles afectaciones que tendrán lugar por el efecto del cambio climático, son elementos fundamentales para diseñar acciones para la protección de los mismos. Palabras claves: formaciones vegetales, Índice de Campo Continuo de Vegetación, MODIS, rangos ambientales One of the most effective ways of evaluating the historical changes in the properties from the vegetation cover to great scale is by techniques of remote perception, by spectral vegetation indexes. Considering the absence of information on the dynamics of the vegetation in Cuban protected areas, the present study has as objective to evaluate the variability of Continuous Vegetation index in the natural vegetal formations in 10 National Parks of Cuba, from 2000 to 2010, as well as the impact of climatic change on these formations. The product of the satellite MODIS was used for a year of the index in 11 images with a resolution of 250 m and 1000 random points were generated in each study area. The multitemporal analysis included the comparison of the percentage of cover of the vegetation during 11 serial years. They were considered the environmental ranges of each formation and the changes of these were evaluated in two future projections: bc26bi50 and bc85bi50 for the scenario 2050. In the evaluated decade, the vegetation covering varied slightly, in five National Parks it increased and in five it reduced. In each National Parks the cover of vegetation was constant with small fluctuations. Significant changes were not detected between the current environmental ranges and the future projections. To know which the historical space changes are in the Cuban terrestrial ecosystems, as well as their possible affectation for the climatic change, it can be fundamental when undertaking actions for their protection.
