Worldwide, cervical cancer was the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women, while in Mexico was the second cause (5.28%). Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy have a high risk of malnutrition secondary to the disease and treatment, affects the patient’s overall, with adverse effects on gastrointestinal symptoms. These use affects the medical therapy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the benefits on individualized nutritional therapy on decrease weight loss and gastrointestinal adverse effects and to consider these outcomes in pharmacology research, especially in repurposing drugs. We conducted a longitudinal design with two comparation groups with medical diagnosis of cervical cancer and received radiotherapy weekly, 1) the intervention group (nutritional intervention and counseling -INC-) with 20 participants and 2) control group (retrospective cohort -CG-) with 9 participants. Weekly body composition, dietary intake, adverse effects (gastrointestinal symptoms), glucose, hemoglobin, and blood pressure were analyzed during 4 to 5 weeks. Both groups had weight loss weekly (p = 0.013 and p = 0.043 respectively) but the CG vs INC presented loss fat-free mass ≥500g in 67 and of 37% respectively. By the end of the intervention a 25% of the INC group had <10 g/dL of hemoglobin vs 60% for the CG. To compare the dietary intake of vitamins (A and folic acid), fiber (p = 0.006), iron (p = 0.03) and energy (mainly carbohydrates) (p = 0.04) were according to the recommendations in INC group (p>0.05). The number needed to treat was 4 (95% CI, 2 to 13). The nutritional intervention and counseling weekly during radiotherapy in cervical cancer to maintain/improve muscle mass, hemoglobin, and dietary intake above 70% of the recommendations for INC group compared to the evidence. Adequate nutritional status was maintained and decrease the rate of complications, mainly gastrointestinal symptoms, in INC group. The efficacy of drug repurposing can improve through individualized nutritional therapy for preventing adverse effects of radiotherapy in patients with cervical cancer.

The need for proven disease-specific treatments for the novel pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 necessitates a worldwide search for therapeutic options. Since the SARS-CoV-2 virus shares extensive homology with SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, effective therapies for SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV may also have therapeutic potential for the current COVID-19 outbreak. To identify therapeutics that might be repositioned for treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 disease COVID-19, we strategically reviewed the literature to identify existing therapeutics with evidence of efficacy for the treatment of the three coronaviruses that cause severe respiratory illness (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2). Mechanistic and in vitro analyses suggest multiple promising therapeutic options with potential for repurposing to treat patients with COVID-19. Therapeutics with particularly high potential efficacy for repurposing include camostat mesylate, remdesivir, favipiravir, tocilizumab, baricitinib, convalescent plasma, and humanized monoclonal antibodies. Camostat mesylate has shown therapeutic potential, likely by preventing viral entry into epithelial cells. In early research, the targeted antivirals remdesivir and favipiravir appear to benefit patients by decreasing viral replication; clinical trials suggest that remdesivir speeds recovery from COVID-19. Tocilizumab and baricitinib appear to improve mortality by preventing a severe cytokine storm. Convalescent plasma and humanized monoclonal antibodies offer passive immunity and decreased recovery time. This review highlights potential therapeutic options that may be repurposed to treat COVID-19 and suggests opportunities for further research.

A expansão da vitivinicultura nacional para além das áreas tradicionais é uma realidade cada vez mais notória. Entretanto, a diversidade climática entre as diferentes regiões produtoras expõe as plantas a condições ambientais distintas e capazes de influenciar o seu desempenho. Neste contexto, estudos sobre o comportamento das variedades frente ao seu ambiente de cultivo são importantes subsídios técnicos na implementação de novos empreendimentos. O objetivo foi avaliar a fenologia, as necessidades térmicas e a maturação de oito variedades viníferas entre 2013 a 2020 nas condições de São Joaquim-SC. As condições térmicas disponíveis na região foram expressas em graus-dia (GD) de forma correlativa com as avaliações fenológicas. As colheitas foram submetidas às análises de acidez total, pH e SST. O ciclo vegetativo médio das variedades foi de 200 dias, sendo a ‘Rebo’ a variedade com ciclo mais longo e a ‘Manzoni Bianco a com ciclo mais curto’. As variedades estudadas produziram frutos com parâmetros de maturação adequados para a elaboração de vinhos finos, com destaque para a ‘Rebo’ dentre as tintas e ‘Manzoni Bianco’ dentre as brancas.

RESUMEN El epifitismo constituye el modo de vida del 5% de la flora vascular cubana los estudios sobre requerimientos de microhábitat por parte de las epífitas se han concentrado en ecosistemas boscosos. De esta forma, existe desconocimiento acerca de la ecología de las epífitas en matorrales xeromorfos espinosos sobre serpentina. Estos ecosistemas constituyen sitios de gran importancia por su riqueza florística y alto endemismo. En este estudio se caracterizó la composición de la sinusia de epífitas vasculares y se evalúo la influencia de las variables del microhábitat sobre su abundancia en el cuabal Lomas de Galindo. La sinusia de epífitas estuvo representada por cuatro especies de Tillandsia, con dominancia numérica de T. recurvata. Todas resultaron holoepífitas y no evidenciaron especificidad entre las especies utilizadas como forófito. El área del forófito y el diámetro de la copa mostraron los mayores valores de correlación con el número de individuos epífitos. La distribución horizontal de las epífitas sobre el forófito mostró mayor afinidad de estas por las ramas internas, debido a su mayor grosor y a las más drásticas condiciones actuantes sobre las ramas externas. Sin embargo, la distribución vertical no evidenció un patrón de segregación entre las especies, probablemente debido al estrecho gradiente microclimático vertical que caracteriza las formaciones arbustivas. Thus, there is poor knwledge about the ecology of epiphytes in xeromorphic thorn scrub on serpentine. These ecosystems are sites of great importance for its floristic richness and high endemism. In this study the composition of the synusia of vascular epiphytes was characterized and influence of microhabitat on abundance was evaluated in the Lomas de Galindo cuabal. The epiphytic synusia was represented by four species of Tillandsia, with numerical dominance of T. recurvata. All were holoepiphytes and showed no specificity between the species used as phorophyte. However, the area of phorophyte and crown diameter showed the highest values of correlation with the number of epiphytic individuals. The horizontal distribution of epiphytic on phorophyte showed higher affinity for these internal branches, due to its greater thickness and to the most drastic you condition on the external branches. Nevertheless, the vertical distribution did not show a pattern of segregation among species, probably due to the narrow vertical gradient microclimate that characterizes the shrub formations. El cultivo de banano es la actividad agrícola más importante de la economía del Urabá antioqueño, desarrollada en 49 000 ha. El fenómeno ENSO ha afectado la producción debido a déficit de precipitación, incrementos de temperatura y periodos de sequía más intensos, a lo que se suman las altas incertidumbres asociadas con el cambio climático y la distribución desigual de las lluvias en la zona; todo ello ha aumentado la necesidad de riego. El objetivo fue estimar mediante simulaciones con el modelo CROPWAT los requerimientos de riego y la reducción del rendimiento del banano cuando se cultiva en condiciones sin riego en tres escenarios de precipitación: 20% (húmedo), 50% (normal) y 80% (seco) de probabilidad de excedencia. Se usaron datos diarios de precipitación y temperatura máxima y mínima de siete estaciones meteorológicas, información fenológica y referencias edafológicas del Urabá, con siembras: en la estación seca (verano) (SV) y en la estación húmeda (temporada de lluvias) (SL). En los resultados, la evapotranspiración del cultivo presenta sus valores mayores con (SV) en marzo-agosto y con (SL) en julio-agosto, Salpicón es la mayor. Todas las estaciones presentan sus valores menores de precipitación efectiva entre enero y marzo, y los requerimientos hídricos mayores para la SV y en el escenario seco (80 %). La reducción del rendimiento en SV fue de 0.9% (húmedo), 5 a 15% (normal), y 25 a 30% (seco); en SL de 2% (húmedo), 1 a 3% (normal), y 5 a 10% (seco). En la zona norte del Urabá antioqueño, el riego suplementario es importante para no tener bajas en el rendimiento en los escenarios seco y normal.

Las enredaderas son elementos conspicuos de la flora de diferentes ecosistemas. Numerosos estudios basados en patrones de distribución y ecología de este grupo de plantas se han realizado a escala regional, se conoce poco sobre los factores que afectan su distribución a nivel local. Se estudiaron los requerimientos germinativos de 21 enredaderas del Bosque chaqueño serrano de Córdoba, las cuales fueron clasificadas en típicas de bosques, matorrales e indiferentes. Se llevaron a cabo experimentos de germinación en tres regímenes de temperatura (15-5ºC, 25-15ºC y 35-20ºC), en luz (12-12hr luz-oscuridad) y oscuridad permanente. Se registró el porcentaje final de germinación, el índice de germinación relativa a la luz (GRL) y la velocidad de germinación (T50). La temperatura fue el principal factor regulador del proceso germinativo. El GRL y el T50 no registraron diferencias entre fisonomías. Los patrones observados apoyan la idea de que la germinación de este grupo de plantas estaría respondiendo a factores macroclimáticos (estacionalidad del clima y las precipitaciones), más que a un microclima (factores asociados a la fisonomía del sitio). La composición diferencial de enredaderas en los parches de bosques y arbustos no estaría explicada por los factores estudiados, sino por características de las etapas posteriores a la semilla.

Las enredaderas son elementos conspicuos de la flora de diferentes ecosistemas. Numerosos estudios basados en patrones de distribución y ecología de este grupo de plantas se han realizado a escala regional, se conoce poco sobre los factores que afectan su distribución a nivel local. Se estudiaron los requerimientos germinativos de 21 enredaderas del Bosque chaqueño serrano de Córdoba, las cuales fueron clasificadas en típicas de bosques, matorrales e indiferentes. Se llevaron a cabo experimentos de germinación en tres regímenes de temperatura (15-5ºC, 25-15ºC y 35-20ºC), en luz (12-12hr luz-oscuridad) y oscuridad permanente. Se registró el porcentaje final de germinación, el índice de germinación relativa a la luz (GRL) y la velocidad de germinación (T50). La temperatura fue el principal factor regulador del proceso germinativo. El GRL y el T50 no registraron diferencias entre fisonomías. Los patrones observados apoyan la idea de que la germinación de este grupo de plantas estaría respondiendo a factores macroclimáticos (estacionalidad del clima y las precipitaciones), más que a un microclima (factores asociados a la fisonomía del sitio). La composición diferencial de enredaderas en los parches de bosques y arbustos no estaría explicada por los factores estudiados, sino por características de las etapas posteriores a la semilla.Vines are conspicuous elements of floras in different ecosystems. Patterns of distribution and ecology of this group has been studied at regional scales, mainly in tropical areas, but less is known about factors affecting their distribution at smaller scales. In this study, the germinating requirements of common vines from two plant communities (open shrubland and woodland) in xerophytic mountain forests (Chaco serrano) were studied. A total of 21 species were selected and classified as typical of woodland, shrubland, or indifferent. Experimental treatments were three temperature regimes (15-5ºC, 25-15ºC and 35-20ºC), in light (12-12h daily photoperiod) and in continuous darkness. Total germination percentage, the relative light germination (RLG) and germination rate (T50) were recorded. Among results we found that the temperature was the main factor triggering the germination process. No differences in the mean RLG and T50 between woodland and shrubland patches were found. The patterns observed in this work support the idea that, independently of patch type, germination is associated with temperature of the time of the year when most of the rainfall occurs. Germination of the studied species would be responding to macroclimate’s factors (seasonality of climate and rainfall), rather than to a microclimate. This indicates that differences in species composition between patches would not be due to the factors studied, rather than to characteristics of the later stages of the cycle life.
