There are few studies related to prey selection and availability. Such an approach is still current, because the ability to predict aspects of the diet in response to changes in prey availability is one of the major problems of trophic ecology. The general objective of this study was to evaluate prey selection by two species (Characidium cf. vidali and Pimelodella lateristriga) of the Mato Grosso stream, in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Benthos and fishes were collected in June, July and September of 2006 and January and February of 2007. Fish were collected with electric fishing techniques and benthos with a surber net. Densities of benthic organisms were expressed as the number of individuals per/m2. After sampling, the invertebrates were fixed in 90% ethanol, and, in the laboratory, were identified to the lowest taxonomical level. Approximately, seventy individuals from each species were selected randomly in each month. Fishes were fixed in 10% formalin in the field and transferred to 70o GL ethanol in the laboratory. Fishes had their stomachs removed for subsequent analysis. Fish diet was described according to the numeric frequency method. The Manly Electivity I ndex was applied in order to verify prey selection. The most abundant families in both benthos and diet of both fish species were the same, indicating that these species consume mainly most abundant prey in the environment. We concluded that prey selection occurs even for preys that had small abundance in the environment . However, it is the availability of the macroinvertebrate resources that determines the major composition of items in diet of fish, demonstrating that the abundance is the factor that most influences the choice of prey. Actualmente, este enfoque se mantiene, debido a que uno de los principales problemas de la ecología trófica es la capacidad de predecir los aspectos de los hábitos alimentarios en respuesta a los cambios en la disponibilidad de las presas. El objetivo general de este estudio fue evaluar la seleccion de las presas en los especies (Characidium cf. vidali y Pimelodella lateristriga) del arroyo Mato Grosso en Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. Se recolectaron bentos y peces en junio, Julio y septiembre 2006 y en enero y febrero 2007. Los peces fueron recolectados con técnicas de pesca eléctrica y los del bentos con una red surber. La densidad de los organismos bentónicos se expresó como el número de individuos por m2. Luego del muestreo, los invertebrados se fijaron en 90% de etanol y se identificaron con el nivel taxonómico más bajo. Los peces fueron fijados con 10% de formalina en el campo y transferidos a etanol 70o GL en el laboratorio. Los estómagos de los peces fueron extirpados para su posterior análisis. Las familias más abundantes del bentos y las dietas de los peces fueron las mismas, lo que indica que estas especies consumen principalmente la presa más abundante en el ambiente. In the European context, urban agriculture is not a recent phenomenon, however, the way it is managed by the public power has presented significant changes, since this activity tends to be increasingly integrated with urban management and land use planning policies. This is the case of urban vegetable gardens in Portugal, analyzed in this article. It has been verified, through the field research, that there are vegetable gardens that appeared spontaneously and the public power does not exercise control or inspection on the same ones and there are gardens organized by the public power. The economic crisis and its social effects, coupled with growing concern about the origin of food consumed, have led to the expansion of urban gardens, which present a diversity of forms of organization, production systems and objectives. It was verified, through interviews, that urban agriculture has provided the production of food for subsistence, without the use of pesticides; the constitution of spaces of intergenerational and intercultural coexistence; the search for greater social cohesion through the exchange of experiences among the participants; and the promotion of environmental education, which also emphasized the social and cultural importance of these cultivation practices in the city. Our method was to analyse documents from state agencies and social organizations as well as theoretical bibliography on the subject. We relate these difficulties with transformations in food systems and the international concerns about sanitary risks, pointing to complex relations between culture, risks, techno-science and development models, as well as to the strong economic interests that challenge the enhancement of public health and food security. We conclude considering the need of an integrated and contextualized analysis of risks in the case of small-scale production, processing, distribution and consumption of food, favoring production models and patterns of food consumption that are fair, democratic, environmentally sustainable, and that have the appreciation of life and health as its main focus. We focus the relations between these policies and the making of a just and sustainable development model that prioritizes family farming and local processing and consumption of foodstuff as ways to healthier eating. We approach, on the one hand, the processes of making, since the 1990’s, of the National Policy for Food and Nutrition Security as a strategic, articulated and priority aim in development strategies. On the other hand we approach the convergence of this processes and the Program for Productive Inclusion with Sanitation Safety, leading to the approval of RDC no. 49/2013. We focus on the connections between sanitation regulation, food consumption patterns, and social and economic development. We emphasize participatory processes in the making of policies, involving dialogues between governments, civil society and social movements. In the majority of the cases, the sons earn the paternal establishment. This way, the fathers compensate the daughters in different ways. The goal of this article is to analyze the transmission of the property in the family agriculture with a focus on the daughter’s compensation form. Answering the proposed issue, family farmers from Pinhal Grande and Dona Francisca municipalities were interviewed, both located at the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. The results confirm that the daughters are not excluded from the family establishment earning just in the cases when they are the only child. In the other cases, the establishments tend to remain with one of the sons - male successor -, while the daughters receive other compensations: studies payment, urban real state, trousseau and money. In many situations, the daughters earn more than one compensation form.
