Strawberry fields receive several pesticides spraying and residues in fruits are recurrent. Development and application of methods that avoid applying pesticides mostly during fructification period are imminent needs. Comparison of population of two-sppoted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae Koch. in organic and mineral fertilized plants (as used by growers) and treated with alternative products were done. Plants were grown in vessels in a greenhouse infested with local population of TSSM. Extracts of Tephrosia voggeli (Hook), neem oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.), and lime sulfur were applied three times against TSSM in ten days intervals. Assessments were done three times after each spraying. Interaction between fertilization and spraying alternatives was also assessed but was not significant. TSSM population was about 44% lesser in organic fertilized plants than those in inorganic fertilized. T. voggeli extracts reduced in large amounts TSSM; neem oil reduced in some assessments and an intermediate reduction was found for sulfur lime. Organic fertilization and T. voggeli extracts are potential strategies to manage TSSM and additional studies are proposed to enable wide utilization

RESUMO: A utilização de bioestimulantes pode auxiliar a mitigar os prejuízos ao milho, ocasionados pela má qualidade de estande. Este trabalho foi conduzido objetivando avaliar o efeito do tratamento de sementes com bioestimulante sobre o desempenho agronômico do milho, submetido a diferentes níveis de variabilidade na distribuição espacial das plantas na linha de semeadura. O experimento foi implantado em Lages, SC, durante o ano agrícola de 2013/2014. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, dispostos em parcelas subdivididas. Nas parcelas principais, testaram-se três níveis de desuniformidade espacial na linha: 0, 50 e 100% do Coeficiente de Variação (CV). No nível 0 % de CV, todas as sementes foram uniformemente distribuídas no sulco de semeadura, a uma distância de 17cm entre si. Nos demais níveis de CV, as distâncias entre sementes variaram conforme o tratamento. Nas subparcelas, testou-se a presença ou ausência do tratamento de sementes com bioestimulante. O aumento da variabilidade na distribuição espacial das plantas reduziu a área foliar e o teor de clorofila da folha índice no espigamento, bem como o diâmetro do colmo na colheita, independentemente do tratamento de sementes com bioestimulante. Isso contribuiu para reduzir o número de grãos por espiga e o rendimento de grãos dos tratamentos com 50 e 100% de CV na variabilidade espacial, tanto na presença quanto na ausência do bioestimulante. Portanto, o tratamento de sementes com bioestimulante não mitigou os prejuízos ao rendimento de grãos do milho ocasionados pela distribuição espacial irregular das plantas na linha de semeadura.

Gladiolus is an ornamental species produced for cut flowers and propagated by corms. The early flowering and increase in the number of flower buds, besides the production of commercial corms are constant challenges to be addressed in the crop improvement. Commercial production of ornamentals is technologically accelerated by means of growth regulators. Among them, the auxins stand out for their key role in the adventitious rooting and cell elongation. Alternatively, the humic substances present in the organic matter also have biostimulating effect, which is very similar to the auxinic effect. Therefore, this work aimed to study the growth and development of gladiolus in response to application of different concentrations of humic acids (HA) isolated from vermicompost. Corms were soaked for 24 hours in solutions containing 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mmol L-1 of C from HA. The corms were planted in 10-dm³ plastic bags filled with substrate and kept in a greenhouse. Growth of shoots and roots was evaluated. The results showed that the use of HA accelerates growth, and anticipates and increases flowering of Gladiolus.O gladíolo é uma planta ornamental para a produção de flores, cuja propagação é realizada por bulbos. A antecipação do florescimento e o aumento do número de botões florais, além da produção de bulbos comerciais, são problemas constantes a serem equacionados na cultura. A produção comercial de plantas ornamentais é tecnologicamente acelerada por meio de reguladores de crescimento. Dentre eles, vêm-se destacando as auxinas, hormônios vegetais com ação no enraizamento adventício e no alongamento celular. Alternativamente, as substâncias húmicas da matéria orgânica apresentam, também, efeito bioestimulante, muito semelhante ao efeito auxínico. Por essas razões, este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar o crescimento e desenvolvimento do gladíolo, em resposta à aplicação de diferentes concentrações de ácidos húmicos (AH), isolados de vermicomposto. Os bulbos foram imersos, por 24 horas, em soluções contendo 0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 mmol L-1 de C de AH. Em seguida, foram plantados em sacolas plásticas de 10,0 dm³, contendo substrato e mantidos em casa de vegetação. Foram avaliadas características de crescimento da parte aérea e do sistema radicular. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que o uso de AH acelera o crescimento, antecipa e aumenta a floração do gladíolo.

A agrobiodiversidade é a parcela da biodiversidade constituída por um conjunto de organismos e ecossistemas que apresentam fortes relações com os seres humanos, podendo ser domesticados, semidomesticados, cultivados ou manejados pelo homem. Essa diversidade, conservada há séculos pelo uso (conservação in situ ou conservação on farm) pelos pequenos agricultores em todas as regiões do planeta, encontra-se ameaçada. De um lado, a agricultura industrial ou química através de suas práticas, ricas em insumos químicos, provoca muitas externalidades negativas, até recentemente pouco consideradas. De outro lado, as mudanças climáticas, igualmente, produzem efeitos adversos à diversidade genética. No entanto, as preocupações com a produção de alimentos de alta qualidade biológica em sistemas agrícolas sustentáveis remontam ainda o início do século XX. Dentre os vários sistemas agrícolas sustentáveis ou alternativos, a agroecologia apresenta vários atributos favoráveis: não faz uso de insumos químicos, é sustentável em todas as suas dimensões, faz uso de grande diversidade genética no cultivo, é socioeconômico-associada, estimula as relações de vizinhança e produz alimentos com alta qualidade biológica e nutricional. No âmbito da agroecologia e não da agricultura industrial ou química, há inúmeras oportunidades para a C&T desenvolver pesquisas participativas, contextualizadas, que podem empoderar tanto a agricultura familiar quanto as comunidades tradicionais no aperfeiçoamento dos processos e princípios agroecológicos utilizados. Assim, muitas das externalidades negativas atualmente inadmissíveis poderiam ser evitadas.

Em 2003, foi criado o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA), no qual agricultores familiares comercializam sua produção junto aos órgãos públicos municipais, que a repassam aos restaurantes populares e banco de alimentos. Com o desenvolvimento do PAA, tornou-se necessária a existência de um modelo de avaliação constante do desempenho dos fornecedores, ou seja, dos agricultores familiares. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo propor um modelo de avaliação dos fornecedores, utilizando um scorecard que avaliasse e classificasse o desempenho dos agricultores familiares do PAA da Secretaria Municipal de Agricultura e Abastecimento (SMAA) do município de São Carlos - SP. A revisão teórica abordou temas referentes à logística e à gestão da cadeia de suprimentos, à medição e avaliação de desempenho e o pedido perfeito. Para o desenvolvimento do estudo de caso, foram realizadas entrevistas com aplicação de questionários semiestruturados junto aos envolvidos no programa. Com base nas informações obtidas, elaborou-se um modelo, que busca conciliar as necessidades da SMAA com os requisitos de um pedido perfeito. O modelo avalia os fornecedores por meio dos indicadores de uniformidade, nível de maturidade, pragas e doenças, pontualidade, entrega completa e entrega futura. Sua aplicação tem o objetivo de promover o desenvolvimento dos fornecedores e contribuir para a melhoria do abastecimento de produtos.

O que acontece quando consumidores e produtores agroecológicos adotam uma prática econômica alternativa ao consumo convencional? O presente artigo analisa e qualifica as comunidades aprendentes existentes no âmbito desse tipo de prática econômica. O estudo de caso do grupo de consumo coletivo de produtos agroecológicos Trocas Verdes, situado em Campinas (SP), no contexto da agricultura familiar no Brasil, mostrou que as trocas econômicas são também trocas de saberes. Além disso, tais trocas constituem uma práxis em educação ambiental. As três dimensões da sustentabilidade - econômica, social e ambiental - são as categorias de análise utilizadas para determinar o potencial pedagógico existente na articulação de uma prática de consumo coletivo. A partir da metodologia da pesquisa participante, observou-se que, na venda direta de produtos agroecológicos a grupos de consumidores organizados de forma autônoma ou que funcionam em regime de autogestão, essa prática econômica também caracteriza um processo de educação ambiental crítica, pois possibilita que se apreenda coletivamente a realidade socioeconômica dos atores envolvidos. As dinâmicas socioeconômicas são objeto de aprendizado dos consumidores e pesquisadores atuantes nas compras e, assim, conclui-se que esse tipo de prática promove um aprendizado coletivo. O presente estudo confirma que um importante fator para a existência de comunidades aprendentes é a autogestão da organização social.What happens when consumers and agro-ecological producers adopt an economic practice alternative to conventional consumption? This article characterizes and analyzes the learning communities which exist within this type of economic practice. The case study of Trocas Verdes (Green Exchange), - a group of collective consumption of agro-ecological products, located in Campinas (SP) - in the context of family farming in Brazil, has shown that economic exchanges are also exchanges of knowledge. Moreover, these exchanges constitute a praxis in environmental education. To determine the educational potential which exists in the articulation of a practice of collective consumption, we have used the three dimensions of sustainability - economic, social and environmental - as categories of analysis. Based on the participatory research methodology, we have observed that in the direct sale of agro-ecological products to groups of consumers that are organized independently or self-managed, this economic practice also characterizes a process of critical environmental education, because it allows learning collectively the socioeconomic reality of the actors involved. The socio-economic dynamics are learnt by the consumers and researchers working in the trade, and thus it is possible to conclude that this practice promotes collective learning. This study confirms that an important factor for the existence of learning communities is the self-management of social organizations.

Foram comparados três consórcios de cebola (cv. Alfa Tropical) e alface (cv. Regina 2000), variando o intervalo de tempo entre transplantios de cada espécie para o campo. O experimento, no delineamento de blocos casualizados, constou dos tratamentos monocultivos de cebola e de alface e três consórcios entre as olerícolas, em seis repetições, mantendo-se o espaçamento da cebola e transplantando- se a alface no mesmo dia, 15 dias e 30 dias depois da cebola. A alface ocupou as entrelinhas alternadas da cebola, representando, em todos os consórcios, metade da densidade populacional do respectivo monocultivo. Com exceção do último tratamento (alface 30 dias após a cebola), os consórcios mostraram-se vantajosos em termos de elevação de renda por unidade de área cultivada. A introdução da alface não reduziu a produtividade da cebola, em bulbos de padrão comercial e o crescimento da folhosa foi comparável ao do seu monocultivo. Os índices de equivalência de área confirmaram a viabilidade do cultivo consorciado, o qual, a par do adequado desempenho agronômico, possibilita um melhor aproveitamento de insumos e serviços no manejo orgânico adotado.Three intercrops of onion (cv. Alfa Tropical) and lettuce (cv. Regina 2000) were compared, varying the time intervals between transplants of each one in the field. The experiment was made in a complete randomized block design with the treatments (replicated six times): monocrops of onion and of lettuce, and intercrops of the two vegetables keeping the same onion spacing arrangement, with lettuce transplanted on the same day, 15 days, and 30 days after onion. Lettuce seedlings were placed between onion rows in an alternating manner, thus corresponding to half of its monocrop population density. Except for the last treatment (lettuce 30 days after onion planting) the intercropping system was advantageous in terms of increased income by cultivated area unit. Introducing lettuce into the system did not decrease onion yield in marketable bulbs. In addition, lettuce growth was comparable to that of its monocrop. The land equivalent ratio values confirmed the viability of intercropping onion and lettuce. Corn cultivation in the Northeast region of Brazil is characterized by a great diversity of production systems, ranging from large companies (modern cultivars and relatively high planting densities) to small farms (family agriculture, traditional cultivars, and low planting densities). In the present work we evaluated the effects of planting density (30; 40; 50; 60; or 70 thousand plants ha-1 - TPH) on green ear yield of cultivars Centralmex (traditional) and AG 510 (hybrid). Different densities were achieved by maintaining 1.0 m between rows and varying the spacing between pits, within the row. Cultivars and planting densities were combined in a factorial scheme, arranged in a random block design with four replicates and four 6 m long row plots. The number of green ears increased with density in both cultivars, but in a significantly more intense pace in cultivar AG 510. Cultivar AG-510 (14.9 t ha-1 on average, maximum yield at 58 TPH) yielded significantly more unhusked green ears than cultivar Centralmex (13.6 t ha-1 on average, maximum at 61 TPH). Marketable green ear yield increased with density in both cultivars, but more intensively in cultivar AG 510, which significantly out yielded cultivar Centralmex from 43 TPH ahead. The difference between cultivars at the planting density of 70 TPH was 14.4 t ha-1. There was no response of cultivar Centralmex in number of marketable husked green ears, while cultivar AG 510 increased yield with planting density. The difference between both cultivars started being significant at 38 TPH. Husked ear length decreased linearly and similarly in both cultivars as planting density increased. Planting density did not influence plant and ear height, and cultivar Centralmex was superior in both characteristics at all planting densities. There was no effect of cultivars on stalk diameter and root system biomass. Both characteristics decreased linearly as planting density increased.O cultivo do milho na região Nordeste do Brasil é caracterizado por uma grande diversidade de sistemas de produção, que variam de grandes empresas (cultivares modernas e densidades de plantio relativamente elevadas) a pequenas propriedades (agricultura familiar, cultivares tradicionais e baixas densidades de plantio). O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da densidade de plantio (30; 40; 50; ou 70 mil plantas ha-1 - MPH) sobre o rendimento de espigas verdes das cultivares Centralmex (tradicional) e AG 510 (híbrido). As diferentes densidades foram obtidas mantendo-se 1,0 m entre fileiras e variando-se o espaçamento entre covas na fileira. As cultivares e densidades de plantio foram combinadas em um arranjo fatorial disposto no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e parcelas com quatro fileiras de 6,0 m. O número de espigas verdes aumentou com a densidade nas duas cultivares, mas de maneira significativamente mais intensa na cultivar AG 510. A cultivar AG 510 (com rendimento médio de 14,9 t ha-1 e rendimento máximo na densidade de 58 MPH) produziu significativamente mais espigas verdes despalhadas que a cultivar Centralmex (rendimento médio de 13,6 t ha-1 e rendimento máximo na densidade de 61 MPH). O rendimento de espigas verdes comercializáveis aumentou com a densidade de plantio nas duas cultivares, mas mais intensamente na cultivar AG 510, que superou significativamente a cultivar Centralmex a partir da densidade de 43 MPH. A diferença entre cultivares na densidade de plantio de 70 MPH foi 14,4 t ha-1. Não houve alteração significativa no número de espigas despalhadas comercializáveis na cultivar Centralmex. Porém, na cultivar AG 510, essa característica aumentou com a densidade de plantio. A diferença entre as cultivares tornou-se significativa a partir de 38 MPH. O comprimento da espiga despalhada diminuiu linearmente e de maneira similar em ambas as cultivares com o aumento da densidade de plantio. A densidade de plantio não influenciou as alturas da planta e de inserção da espiga, com superioridade da cultivar Centralmex para essas características em todas as densidades de plantio. Não existiu efeito de cultivares sobre o diâmetro do colmo e biomassa do sistema radicular e ambas características diminuíram linearmente com o aumento da densidade de plantio.

It also points out the need for appropriate technologies and amendments development. Looking at experiences with urban agriculture in development countries, it shows the need for local capacity development and a search for the public sector support, specially of organized groups mobilized for urban agriculture production.
