                <text>Diesel-powered vehicles are intensively used in urban areas for transportinggoods and people but can substantially contribute to high emissions of blackcarbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), and other gaseous pollutants. Strategiesaimed at controlling mobile emissions sources thus have the potential toimprove air quality and help mitigate the impacts of air pollutants onclimate, ecosystems, and human health. However, in developing countries thereare limited data on the BC and OC emission characteristics of diesel-poweredvehicles, and thus there are large uncertainties in the estimation of theemission contributions from these sources. We measured BC, OC, and otherinorganic components of fine particulate matter (PM), as well as carbonmonoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ethane,acetylene, benzene, toluene, and C2-benzenes under real-world drivingconditions for 20 diesel-powered vehicles encompassing multiple emission leveltechnologies in Mexico City with the chasing technique using the Aerodynemobile laboratory. Average BC emission factors ranged from0.41&amp;ndash;2.48 g kg−1 of fuel depending on vehicle type. The vehicles werealso simultaneously measured using the cross-road remote sensing technique toobtain the emission factors of nitrogen oxide (NO), CO, total hydrocarbons,and fine PM, thus allowing for the intercomparison of the results from the twotechniques. There is overall good agreement between the two techniques andboth can identify high and low emitters, but substantial differences werefound in some of the vehicles, probably due to the ability of the chasingtechnique to capture a larger diversity of driving conditions in comparisonto the remote sensing technique. A comparison of the results with the US EPAMOVES2014b model showed that the model underestimates CO, OC, and selectedVOC species, whereas there is better agreement for NOx and BC. LargerOC / BC ratios were found in comparison to ratios measured in Californiausing the same technique, further demonstrating the need for usinglocally obtained diesel-powered vehicle emission factor database indeveloping countries in order to reduce the uncertainty in the emissionsestimates and to improve the evaluation of the effectiveness of emissionsreduction measures.</text>

                <text>The tunicate Ciona intestinalis is an opportunistic invader with high potential for causing economic losses in aquaculture centers. Recent phylogenetic and population genetic analysis support the existence of a genetic complex described as C. intestinalis with two main dominant species (sp A and B) occurring worldwide. In Chile, the species has been observed around 30°S of latitude, but no official reports exist for the presence of C. intestinalis in southern regions (above 40°S), where most of the mollusk aquaculture centers are located. Here, we used occurrences from multiple invaded regions and extensive field sampling to model and validate the environmental conditions that allow the species to persist and to find the geographic areas with the most suitable environmental conditions for the spread of C. intestinalis in the Chilean coast. By studying the potential expansion of C. intestinalis southward in the Chilean Coast, we aimed to provide valuable information that might help the development of control plans before the species becomes a significant problem, especially above 40°S. Our results highlight that, by using portions of the habitat that are apparently distinguishable, the species seem to be not only genetically distinct, but ecologically distinct as well. The two regional models fitted for sp A and for sp B showed disagreement on which sections of Chilean coastline are considered more suitable for these species. While the model for sp A identifies moderately to highly suitable areas between 30° and 40°S, the model for sp B classifies the areas around 45°S as the most appropriate. Data from field sampling show a positive linear relationship between density of C. intestinalis and the index of suitability for sp A in aquaculture centers. Understanding the relation of the distinct species with the surrounding environment provided valuable insights about probable routes of dispersion in Chile, especially into those areas considered suitable for aquaculture activities but where the species has not yet been recorded. We discuss the implications of our findings as a useful tool to anticipate the invasion of such harmful invasive species with regard to the most relevant environmental variables.</text>

                <text>Los bosques sub-Andinos poseen alta diversidad biológica, de los cuales poco se conoce sobre su dinámica natural. Se evaluaron patrones de diversidad y biomasa, tasas de mortalidad y reclutamiento en dos parcelas permanentes de una hectárea cada una, establecidas en bosques en altitudes entre los 2 000-2 200msnm, en la vertiente Oriental de la cordillera Occidental del norte de los Andes en Colombia. Se determino diversidad de especies mediante el índice alpha de Fisher, la dinámica del bosque se evaluó mediante tres censos durante nueve anos. En total, se hallaron 1 964 individuos con un diámetro a la altura del pecho DAP≥10cm. pertenecientes a 222 especies, 113 géneros y 60 familias. La riqueza media de especies fue de 156 especies por hectárea y un índice alpha medio de Fisher de 56.2/h. Las tasas de mortalidad y reclutamiento fueron de 0.88% y 1.16% respectivamente, lo cual no indica que se presente un efecto externo proveniente del calentamiento global sobre la dinámica del bosque. La biomasa aérea promedio fue de 243.44±9.82tn/ha con un incremento anual promedio de 2.9ton/ha, valor superior a los reportados, lo cual sugiere que el equilibrio para este bosque no se ha alcanzado. De acuerdo con las observaciones de campo, este bosque parece estar recuperándose de una alteración pasada.</text>

                <text>Climatic change will affect crop yields and management. By the year 2050, the mean temperature could increase by 1.5 ºC; and by the year 2100 between 1.0 to 3.5 ºC. There are few studies on this subject in Chile. At the international level, estimated climatic changes in temperate and tropical zones could negatively affect wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) production, as examples. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between agricultural systems and climatic change by using the Ricardian Method. Specific objectives were to evaluate and quantify the relationship of climatic variables (precipitation and temperature) with economic variables under several realities of farms, to simulate the impact of scenarios of climatic change, to propose general orientations of adaptation and to evaluate the Ricardian Method with Chilean data. Economic and productive information from farmers belonging to Technological Transfer Groups (GTT) of the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) was collected. The Ricardian Method explained 37.6% of land value variation. The highest values were in areas with moderate temperatures and precipitation. Temperature had a lower relationship to land value than precipitation. Under specific conditions (type of producer, irrigation, extension) were detected behaviors that require further analysis. Upon simulating change of temperature and precipitation, the negative impacts on land value tended to be of lower magnitude than in other warmer regions. A tendency was observed for increased temperature to be beneficial, and a neutral to positive effect with less precipitation. La temperatura presentó menor relación con el valor del suelo que la precipitación. Bajo algunas condiciones (tipo de productor, riego, capacitación) se detectaron comportamientos que requieren mayor análisis. Al simular cambios de temperatura y precipitación los impactos negativos en el valor del suelo tienden a ser menores que en regiones cálidas.                 <text>The aim of this study was to quantify the water consumption and the crop coefficients (Kc) for the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil, under organic management, and to simulate the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using the Kc obtained in the field and the ones recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The water consumption was obtained through soil water balance, using TDR probes installed at 0.15m and 0.30m deep. At the different stages of development, the Kc was determined by the ratio of ETc and reference evapotranspiration, obtained by Penman-Monteith FAO 56. The crop coefficients obtained were 0.35, 0.45, 1.29 and 0.63. The accumulated ETc obtained in the field was 109.6 mm, while the ETc accumulated from FAO's Kc were 142.2 and 138mm, respectively, considering the classical values and the values adjusted to the local climatic conditions. The simulation of water consumption based on meteorological data of historical series from 1961 to 2007 provided higher value of ETc when compared with the one obtained in the field. From the meteorological data of historical series, it was observed that the use of Kc recommended by FAO may overestimate the amount of irrigation water by 9%, over the same growing season.O trabalho foi desenvolvido visando a quantificar, sob manejo agroecológico, o consumo hídrico e os kcs para a cultura da batata (Solanum tuberosum L.), em Seropédica (RJ), e a simular a evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc), utilizando os kcs obtidos e os kcs preconizados pela FAO. O consumo hídrico foi obtido por meio do balanço hídrico do solo, utilizando sondas de TDR instaladas a 0,15 e 0,30 m de profundidade. Nas diferentes fases de desenvolvimento, o kc foi determinado pela razão entre a ETc e a evapotranspiração de referência, obtida por Penman-Monteith FAO 56. Os kcs obtidos foram 0,35; 0,45; 1,29 e 0,63. A ETc acumulada obtida em campo foi de 109,6 mm, enquanto as ETcs acumuladas a partir dos kcs FAO foram de 142,2 e 138,0 mm, respectivamente, considerando os valores clássicos e os corrigidos para as condições climáticas locais. A simulação do consumo hídrico com base nos dados meteorológicos da série histórica de 1961 a 2007 proporcionou valor maior de ETc quando comparado ao obtido em campo. A partir dos dados meteorológicos obtidos na série histórica, observou-se que a utilização de kcs preconizados pela FAO pode superestimar a quantidade de água na irrigação em 9%, considerando o mesmo período de cultivo.</text>

La información se analizó por medio de una matriz de cambio para cada propiedad física. La tracción mecánica afectó negativamente las propiedades físicas del suelo, lo que se evidenció en el incremento de pérdidas por escorrentía. La mayor pérdida de suelo se asoció con el uso de LM y disminuyó hasta el 50% con LTH: (LM 6.12 t ha-1 año-1; LMC 5.0 t ha-1 año-1; LTA 3.7 t ha-1 año-1 and LTH 2.73 t ha-1 año-1). LTA generó la mayor retribución económica y ambiental, porque su producción (13 t/ha) fue mayor que el promedio obtenido en los tratamientos (12.4 t/ha) y la pérdida de suelo fue menor que la generada por LM y LMC.This study evaluated the loss and the changes in the soil physical properties, and the production of yellow potato Solanum phureja, as a result of four tillage systems (Human traction, THT; Animal traction, ATT; Mechanical, MT; and Mechanical combined, CMT) in Santa Lucia, Tuluá municipality, high andean region of Colombia to 2.870 masl. Treatments were evaluated using a completely randomized blocks desing with three replicates, and the data examined by means of a matrix of change for each physical property. Soil loss was determined by the ditch of runoff. Mechanical traction affected the soil physical properties negatively, that became evident in the increment of losses with the runoff. The bigger loss of soil was correlated with MT use and it diminished to the 50 % with HTT: (MT 6.12 tha-1 year-1; CMT 5.0 tha-1 year-1; ATT 3.7 tha-1 year-1 and HTT 2.73 tha-1 year-1). ATT generated the bigger cost-reducing and environmental retribution, because his production (13 tha-1) was major than the average obtained in the treatments (12.4 tha-1) and the lost one belonging to ground was minor than the generated for MT and CMT.</text>

Se analizan las percepciones acerca del cambio climático, sobre las medidas de adaptación y /o mitigación y también la visión acerca de las energías renovables no convencionales uno de los principales factores que pueden incidir en la reducción de las emisiones de gas de efecto invernadero.As medidas para enfrentar as mudanças climáticas no planeta envolvem um conjunto de fatores, entre os quais a existência de estruturas e organizações que catalizem e impulsionem uma ação transformadora. A capacitação local envolve a consciência dos cidadãos e das elites, em consonância com as ações de resposta institucional em vários níveis. Com base em um estudo empírico, foram analisadas as orientações das elites estudantis universitárias no Chile. Analisamos as percepções sobre mudanças climáticas, adaptação e/ou mitigação, e também a visão sobre energias renováveis não convencionais, um dos principais fatores que podem reduzir as emissões de gases de efeito estufa.Measures to address climate change on the planet involve a number of factors including the existence of structures and organizations to catalyze and encourage transformative actions. Local capacity building involves the consciousness of citizens and elites in line with the institutional actions to respond at various levels. Based on empirical research the orientations of the elite university students in Chile are analyzed. We focus on the perceptions of climate change, adaptation and / or mitigation measures and the vision of non-conventional renewable energy one of the main factors that may influence the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases.</text>

                <text>This study describes the severity of the 2005 bleaching event at 15 reef sites across Venezuela and compares the 1998 and 2005 bleaching events at one of them. During August and September 2005, bleached corals were first observed on oceanic reefs rather than coastal reefs, affecting 1 to 4% of coral colonies in the community (3 reef sites, n=736 colonies). At that time, however, no bleached corals were recorded along the eastern coast of Venezuela, an area of seasonal upwelling (3 reefs, n=181 colonies). On coastal reefs, bleaching started in October but highest levels were reached in November 2005 and January 2006, when 16% of corals were affected among a wide range of taxa (e.g. scleractinians, octocorals, Millepora and zoanthids). In the Acropora habitats of Los Roques (an oceanic reef), no bleached was recorded in 2005 (four sites, n=643 colonies). At Cayo Sombrero, a coastal reef site, bleaching was less severe in 1998 than in 2005 (9% of the coral colonies involving 2 species vs. 26% involving 23 species, respectively). Our results indicate that bleaching was more severe in 2005 than in 1998 on Venezuelan reefs; however, no mass mortality was observed in either of these two events. Rev. Biol.
