En México, algunas comunidades dependen de los servicios ambientales del manglar. En la Reserva de la Biosfera La Encrucijada, la conectividad de los ecosistemas que conforman los humedales está disminuyendo a causa de los incendios y las actividades humanas. La degradación se agravó durante los efectos generados por los huracanes Paulina (1997) y Mitch (1998). El enfoque de Adaptación basada en Ecosistemas (AbE) fue utilizado para identificar los beneficios locales proporcionados por los manglares y el aumento de su capacidad de adaptación al cambio climático y considerando que si el manglar se encuentra en buen estado de conservación se mantendrán los servicios de los ecosistemas, incluyendo la protección contra huracanes y sus efectos. En este sentido, para la evaluación del estado de conservación y la estructura de la vegetación se monitorearon 7 transectos, donde se registraron: a) cambios en el tipo de vegetación (datos biológicos, fenológicos, altura de especies arbóreas y en los manglares la condición de las raíces aéreas), b) la representatividad de las especies locales para cada tipo de vegetación identificado (manglares, bosques tropicales de agua dulce, vegetación de dunas costeras, selva baja, arbustos espinosos y cultivos), c) la conectividad diferenciando la continuidad entre los diferentes tipos de vegetación costera o la ruptura de la continuidad por actividades antrópicas, d) el cambio en la cobertura de vegetación e) cambios en la integridad de la vegetación asociados a ecoturismo, asentamientos humanos, cultivos o, y f) la microtopografía de los transectos identificando la altura del escarpe de playa y la pendiente del transecto. Los transectos fueron colocados transversalmente a las islas de barrera, según los diferentes tipos de vegetación y usos de la tierra. Para evaluar la vulnerabilidad social local a climas extremos, se analizaron los cambios en la cobertura vegetal mediante técnicas de teledetección, estadísticas demográficas y se aplicaron entrevistas semi-estructuradas a los habitantes locales y las autoridades de Protección Civil. Los resultados indican que los ciclones tropicales en la region no son tan frecuentes (3 a 8 registrados en 67 años), por lo que solo el 8% de los encuestados percibieron los ciclones como peligro. [Metodología]: Fue determinada la biodiversidad arbórea, el almacenamiento de carbono aéreo y de suelo, las propiedades químicas y físicas del suelo en 7 fincas con diversos tipos de cobertura: bosque nativo alterado, sistemas agroforestales con yerba mate, cultivo anual de subsistencia y pasturas. En cada uno de los puntos de muestreo, fueron registrados datos de los individuos arbóreos y arbustivos, y fueron tomadas muestras del estrato herbáceo, hojarasca y suelo. [Resultados]: Se registró mayor índice de diversidad y almacenamiento de carbono aéreo en bosques nativos alterados y sistemas agroforestales, sin diferencia significativa entre ellos. Los valores de CIC y Ca+2 de suelo fueron más elevados en los bosques nativos alterados comparado con pasturas, y los otros usos presentaron valores intermedios. No hubo diferencias significativas entre los diferentes usos en cuanto al carbono almacenado ni en estabilidad de la estructura del suelo. Sin embargo, las pasturas presentaron índices de calidad de suelo más bajos. [Conclusiones]: Se demostró que bosques nativos alterados y sistemas agroforestales aportan más a la conservación de la diversidad arbórea, retención de carbono y calidad del suelo. Esta especie presenta un alto de grado de aceptación a la alimentación con quistes de artemia, a partir del 11 Día Post Eclosión(DPE) y, posteriormente, a alimento artificial, desde los 47 DPE; lo anterior, se convierte en un aporte para la obtención e identificación de mecanismos y estrategias que promuevan el uso y la conservación en cautiverio de E. mutisii, con el fin de fomentar el aprovechamiento acuícola en este especie, que se encuentra en amenaza de extinción y puede ser una fuente alimenticia, que contribuya a la seguridad alimentaria de la población Cundiboyacense. El bacalao fue un alimento barato usado para sostener a la fuerza de trabajo esclavizada y libre en la larga duración caribeña y trasatlántica. El desarrollo del capitalismo, según Jason Moore, ha dependido de la expansión de las fronteras productivas (zonas de explotación de mano de obra y recursos) y de la extracción y consumo de insumos baratos. Para ello, ha dependido de la extracción de un excedente ecológico basado, en este caso, en la apropiación del trabajo no remunerado de mujeres y niños. El bacalao se produjo en unas condiciones de explotación y trabajo no remunerado de hombres, mujeres y niños en Terranova, para alimentar a familias pobres en Puerto Rico. El objetivo principal de este trabajo consiste aplicar esos planteamientos teóricos de Moore, en el análisis de esas dos formaciones sociales, que han sido colonias de poderes imperiales; ambas vinculadas en una Ecología-Mundo basada en la producción y el consumo del bacalao; un proceso mediado por las clases mercantiles de ambos territorios. Las islas caribeñas estuvieron vinculadas a ese comercio trasatlántico (que incluía esclavos, melaza, rones y maderas) a través de intercambios con Terranova y Nueva Inglaterra, desde el siglo XVI. Los siglos XIX y XX, con el auge de la producción azucarera en Puerto Rico, fueron determinantes en establecer ese patrón de consumo y Terranova fue uno de los principales productores y suplidores de ese producto a Puerto Rico y el Caribe, manteniendo una estrategia de expansión de la frontera productiva, saliendo de la pesca costera para pescar en los grandes bancos, mediante un proceso sistemático de acumulación e inversión de capital, articulado por innovaciones en las artes de pesca y las embarcaciones. Este artículo sugiere que la suma de las importaciones por los países del Caribe contribuyó al eventual colapso de los abastos pesqueros de Terranova. Este trabajo es un primer paso en el análisis de la profunda relación entre el capital y la naturaleza y un paso en la exploración de como esas relaciones trasatlánticas fueron configurando el trabajo y la naturaleza en dos extremos del océano. Cuando se escriba la historia de las poblaciones de peces y los abastos pesqueros de Terranova, habrá que contar con la participación de Puerto Rico, y su rol en el proceso de intensificación de la producción, es decir, de la expansión de la frontera vertical y de la horizontal de la producción.
