A key first step in optimising COVID-19 patient outcomes during future case-surges is to learn from the experience within individual hospitals during the early stages of the pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of variation in COVID-19 outcomes between National Health Service (NHS) hospital trusts and regions in England using data from March-July 2020. This was a retrospective observational study using the Hospital Episode Statistics administrative dataset. Patients aged ≥ 18 years who had a diagnosis of COVID-19 during a hospital stay in England that was completed between March 1st and July 31st, 2020 were included. In-hospital mortality was the primary outcome of interest. In secondary analysis, critical care admission, length of stay and mortality within 30 days of discharge were also investigated. Multilevel logistic regression was used to adjust for covariates. There were 86,356 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 included in the study, of whom 22,944 (26.6%) died in hospital with COVID-19 as the primary cause of death. After adjusting for covariates, the extent of the variation in-hospital mortality rates between hospital trusts and regions was relatively modest. Trusts with the largest baseline number of beds and a greater proportion of patients admitted to critical care had the lowest in-hospital mortality rates. There is little evidence of clustering of deaths within hospital trusts. There may be opportunities to learn from the experience of individual trusts to help prepare hospitals for future case-surges.

The increase in consumption of healthier foods has improved the organic fertilizers market. Aspects related to research on its agronomic quality are important in order to ensure the public health as well as environmental preservation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the variability of the chemical composition of commercial vermicompounds. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with five treatments, represented by samples V1 (commercial vermicompost S), V2 (commercial vermicompost SS), V3 (commercial vermicompost B), V4 (commercial vermicompost V) and V5 (commercial vermicompost A), each one with three replicates. The analyses of pH, total organic matter, ash, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon/nitrogen ratio and vermicompost mineralization index were performed in triplicate. The results showed that the commercialized vermicompost presents a great variability in their chemical composition and do not comply with the Brazilian organic fertilizer legislation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, regarding the total organic matter content and carbon/nitrogen ratio. The lack of information regarding the physical and chemical composition in the product packing is a promoter of the empirical application of vermicompost in farming and should be avoided.

Variable retention is an alternative harvesting system that could be implemented instead the more traditional ones (e.g. shelterwood cut for N. pumilio forests in southern Patagonia), because it was designed not only for timber purpose, but also for conservation. However, the impact of different retention types on diversity is not clear, e.g. stenotopic and eurytopic bird species. The objective of this work was to analyse the habitats (inside, edge or outside of aggregated retention) and the use of strata (canopy, stem, debris and floor) for different bird species under two different variable retention harvesting types (aggregated + dispersed retentions, or ggregated retention + clear-cuts). We analysed four years of bird observation data in variable retention harvested and unharvested forest permanent plots located in Tierra del Fuego province (Argentina) belonging to PEBANPA (Parcelas de Ecología y Biodiversidad de Ambientes Naturales en Patagonia Austral) network, also with understory and crown cover data. Statistical analysis included uni- and multivariate tests, and comparisons with unharvested forests. We inventoried nine bird species, six of which showed significantly different habitat preference in variable retention types (Carduelis barbata, Phrygilus patagonicus and Tachycineta leucopyga in aggregated + dispersed retentions, and Enicognathus ferrugineus, P. patagonicus, T. leucopyga, Troglodytes aedon and Zonotrichia capensis in aggregated retention + clearcuts). Likewise, all evaluated species presented differential use of strata, and some species changed comparing harvested and unharvested forests. DCA (Detrended Corresponded Analysis) highlighted association between species and habitats (e.g. P. patagonicus is more related to outside aggregated retentions) as well as differences between variable retention types, showing that bird species move toward edges when clear-cuts were carried out, among aggregated retention, instead of dispersed retention. These results support the effectiveness of the variable retention to conserve habitat of bird species inside managed forests, which satisfy both stenotopic and eurytopic species requirements.

El análisis de regresión lineal es una de las técnicas estadísticas que más se usan en los experimentos planificados para estudiar el funcionamiento de los sistemas naturales, en especial en estudios mensurativos. Muchas veces, el investigador no tiene capacidad de controlar la porción explicativa del modelo de regresión, por lo que las variables explicativas pueden resultar tan aleatorias o más que la variable respuesta. Esto podría generar sesgos en las estimaciones de las pendientes asociadas y conducir a conclusiones equivocadas. Una alternativa al método de regresión clásico es la regresión tipo II, diseñada para cuando no se pueden fijar los valores de la variable explicativa. En este trabajo se presentan distintas situaciones basadas en investigaciones publicadas en ecología y agronomía con diferentes objetivos: predicción, estimación de la pendiente y comparación de pendientes entre dos grupos, en las que el problema de variación aleatoria en las variables explicativas está presente con distinto grado de relevancia. En cada caso se identifica cuál es el camino más adecuado para el análisis. También se realizó una simulación que consideró distintas combinaciones para los errores aleatorios en las variables regresora y respuesta con el objetivo de visualizar el sesgo de los estimadores en cada situación para los diferentes métodos de regresión. De lo presentado se desprende que se debe poner énfasis en dos cuestiones muy importantes para poder decidir el método de regresión tipo II más adecuado: tener en claro cuál es el objetivo del trabajo y si se cumplen las condiciones de aplicación requeridos por cada método. Esta revisión pretende ser una sencilla guía de cuándo y qué método aplicar en cada situación.

En este artículo se identifican las principales variables que influyen en la adopción de tecnologías de agricultura de precisión (AP) descritas en la literatura. Para esto, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sistemática en tres bases de datos (Scopus, Web of Science y Scielo), combinando los términos “agricultura de precisión, aplicación y adopción, tecnologías y cultivos”. La búsqueda arrojó más de sesenta documentos, los cuales fueron sometidos a filtros para exclusiones preestablecidas. Como resultado de estos filtros, se seleccionaron once artículos para analizarlos, lo cual permitió identificar contextos de análisis de aplicaciones de tecnologías de AP en Colombia. Los hallazgos muestran que la facilidad de uso y la utilidad percibida son los aspectos principales de la adopción de la aplicación de las tecnologías AP. Asimismo, se encontró que las variables relacionadas con las características del productor y la propiedad son los principales determinantes de la adopción vinculados al contexto ex post.

As borboletas (Lepdoptera), por serem coloridas e de fácil visualização, são ótimas bandeiras para conservação. Também são boas indicadoras ambientais e úteis no monitoramento de ecossistemas. O objetivo desse estudo foi realizar análise da composição, riqueza e abundância das borboletas do Museu de História Natural e Jardim Botânico (MHNJB) UFMG, relacionando esses parâmetros com a sazonalidade. As coletas foram realizadas bimestralmente durante um ano (entre junho de 2016 e maio de 2017). Cada amostragem foi realizada por dois dias, com o uso de redes entomológicas em cada uma das quatro áreas predeterminadas, num total de 48 horas de esforço amostral. Foram coletadas 571 borboletas de 95 espécies, sendo 40 singletons e 14 doubletons. A abundância e a riqueza não variaram entre os meses (F = 1,227, p = 0,337; F = 1,34, p = 0,378, respectivamente) e nem entre as estações (F = 0,7749, p = 0,388; F = 1,0045, p = 0,327, respectivamente). Já a composição das espécies diferiu entre os meses (p = 0,003) e entre as estações (p = 0,017). A curva de acúmulo de espécies não se estabilizou, indicando que há mais espécies para serem amostradas nas matas (áreas T1, T2, T3 e T4) do Museu.

Los bosques de pino-encino de la comunidad de Nuevo San Juan, Michoacán, están dominados por Pinus pseudostrobus, P. devoniana y P. leiophylla. Los patrones de variación genética de estas especies no se conocen lo suficiente, particularmente los de P. leiophylla, lo cual limita la creación de lineamientos para el movimiento de semillas y plántulas para reforestación y su adaptación al cambio climático. Las especies se recolectaron en cuatro o cinco procedencias a lo largo de un transecto altitudinal (1,650 a 2,500 m) para el establecimiento de un ensayo en vivero, con el objetivo de cuantificar la variación genética entre y dentro de las especies. La altura de la planta (tres y cinco meses de edad) fue significativamente diferente (P < 0.0001) entre especies. Entre procedencias hubo diferencias significativas para P. devoniana (P < 0.0001) y P. leiophylla (P = 0.0352). La especie P. devoniana mostró un pronunciado patrón de crecimiento asociado con la altitud de origen, donde las plantas con mayor crecimiento procedían de una menor altitud. Las poblaciones de P. leiophylla fueron diferentes sólo a los tres meses de edad, sin un patrón altitudinal estadísticamente significativo. No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre poblaciones de P. pseudostrobus.

El Bosque Seco Tropical es uno de los ecosistemas más amenazados en Colombia y aún se desconocen diferentes aspectos sobre su avifauna y ecología, especialmente en el sur del Valle del Magdalena en Colombia. En este estudio se evaluaron las variaciones en la diversidad taxonómica y funcional en un ensamblaje de aves en un área con diferentes estados sucesionales en un bosque seco en el sur del valle del río Magdalena. Para la caracterización de la avifauna se llevaron a cabo puntos de conteos de radio fijo y para la complejidad de hábitat se cuantificaron variables estructurales de la vegetación en cada estado sucesional, se realizó un análisis de componentes principales, donde se utilizó el primer componente principal como una medida de la complejidad de hábitat. Los resultados muestran que la diversidad taxonómica medida como riqueza basada en el número efectivo de especies, y la diversidad funcional evaluada mediante el índice de riqueza funcional del ensamblaje se correlacionan significativamente con la complejidad del hábitat, aumentando en estados sucesionales más complejos. Esta tendencia fue positiva para frugívoros e insectívoros, y negativa para los granívoros, por lo que el estado sucesional y la complejidad de hábitat pueden estar jugando un papel clave en la estructuración de las comunidades de avifauna. Estos resultados contribuyen al conocimiento de la avifauna y su relación ecológica con el bosque seco en el sur del valle geográfico del río Magdalena.

Con el objetivo de evaluar la variación de los grupos de la mesofauna edáfica a partir de la aplicación de métodos agroecológicos, se realizó un estudio en una finca con más de 20 años de establecida en la provincia Artemisa (Cuba). Anteriormente la finca no recibió enmiendas orgánicas y se utilizaba como área de pastoreo para el ganado Cebú con una carga baja. Se transformó el área de pastizal en tres sistemas productivos: 25 % de forraje, 25 % de policultivo y 50 % de pastizal tradicional, que fue designado como área control. El área de forraje se estableció en forma de mosaico, con pequeñas parcelas de cultivos perennes, y contó con un suministro periódico de abonos orgánicos; mientras que el área de policultivo integró un sistema de rotación de cultivos de ciclo corto, fundamentalmente, y se le aplicó compost. Los muestreos se realizaron en las épocas poco lluviosa y lluviosa, a los seis y ocho años de la transformación. Se recolectó un total de 1 915 microinvertebrados edáficos pertenecientes al phylum Arthropoda, representado por dos subphylum, tres clases, dos subclases, seis órdenes y dos familias. Las curvas de dominancia-diversidad mostraron que en el pastizal y en el área de forraje las comunidades faunísticas fueron más abundantes y diversas, y se distinguieron por una alta dominancia de los microartrópodos detritívoros. En el área de policultivo no se presentaron taxones dominantes. Se concluye que el comportamiento de la mesofauna edáfica fue altamente dependiente del tipo de manejo del suelo y de la estacionalidad.
