Three intercrops of onion (cv. Alfa Tropical) and lettuce (cv. Regina 2000) were compared, varying the time intervals between transplants of each one in the field. The experiment was made in a complete randomized block design with the treatments (replicated six times): monocrops of onion and of lettuce, and intercrops of the two vegetables keeping the same onion spacing arrangement, with lettuce transplanted on the same day, 15 days, and 30 days after onion. Lettuce seedlings were placed between onion rows in an alternating manner, thus corresponding to half of its monocrop population density. Except for the last treatment (lettuce 30 days after onion planting) the intercropping system was advantageous in terms of increased income by cultivated area unit. Introducing lettuce into the system did not decrease onion yield in marketable bulbs. In addition, lettuce growth was comparable to that of its monocrop. The land equivalent ratio values confirmed the viability of intercropping onion and lettuce. Besides the adequate agronomic performance, the system leads to more efficiency of inputs and hand labor utilization under the organic management adopted.</text>

A soja cv.

US$ 17.856,55 (42%) / US$ 4.795,85 (39%); COT: US$ 5.182,40 (11%) / - US$ 1.691,97 (-13%); CPT: US$ 4.846,26 (10%) / -US$ 1.792,80 (-14%).

FEASIBILITY OF CONTINUOUS BIODIGESTER USE: A case study in Community Arara, Tavares municipality (PB) ABSTRACT In the semi-arid region with its peculiarities are applying viable techniques for coexistence with the environment. They are various ways to develop, and therefore the region has the implementation of social technologies, they spread everywhere. One of the technologies that are gaining ground in the semiarid region is the implementation of biodigesters, use of biomass to generate energy/gas. The model widely used in semiarid is the Indian model, with some adjustments regarding the material construction, this technology is called anaerobic digestion of animal waste (porcine, caprine, equine, and bovine), and depending on which manure may variation occurs in gas production. The digester produces methane gas that can be used on the stove; other products generated in the digester are bio-fertilizer and organic fertilizer. This study was conducted in rural municipality Tavares, Paraíba, in order to analyze the feasibility of use and implementation of this technology. The methodology applied was through literature review, characterization of the area and a semi-structured interview with the owner of the property and the responsible by a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). In order to take advantage of a renewable source of energy, it was concluded that digesters can be used on farms, their implementation presents a viable and acceptable solution for a farmer family to develop within the sustainable universe Keywords: Biodigester; Sustainable Development; Semiarid; Social Technology. = The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization - FAO, states that family farming through its great economic and social importance, receives in Brazil and in the world public policy support and incentives. Thus, this study aimed to study the economic and financial viability of a hydroponic lettuce production in family farming system on a farm in Matão, SP. Hydroponics requires a high initial investment, but shows advantages for the leafy vegetables cultivation compared to traditional cultivation on earth. The study was done according to the Brazilian concept of family farming and to get funding, there was the possibility of using PRONAF More Food program of funding resources and the amount was eighty thousand reais. This credit facility provides resources for investment in machinery and equipment with low interest rates, 3-year grace period and 10 years for payment. The parameters used for the economic analysis study was the Net Present Value - NPV, Internal Rate of Return - IRR and Payback discounted. With this method, using a hurdle rate - TMA of D. Leite et al. 58Rev. iPecege 2(1): 57-65, 20167%, the project NPV was R$ 101,862.76 and the IRR was 30.1% p.a. The return on investment was in four years showing high viability of installing the project.</text>

The northwestern region of the state of Paraná, in the Caiuásandstone area, lacks options for economically feasible agricultural exploration. Thus, pineapple appears as a growth option, needing further studies regarding its exploration in that region. Thepresent review aimed to evaluate the feasibility of this culture and analyze the competitiveness of this region of Umuarama, Paraná State, compared to the state’s main pineapple supplying regions. For this purpose, three producers in Umuarama, Cafezal do Sul and Cruzeiro do Oeste were visited, in order to survey the technical coefficient of this culture and its profit indicators. The analyzed region presents a good and competitive capacity compared to other traditional fruitproducers, mainly due to the proximity of consumer markets. Pineapple is an excellent choice of culture in the familiar agricultural context.</text>

The aim of this work was to evaluate the economic feasibility of two biodigestion systems using animal excrements in a rural settlement, in Itaberá - SP, Brazil, in the year of 2005. One of them was constructed to supply biogas for five residences. The other one was constructed to supply biogas for production activities. The generated benefits related to the supply of electric and thermal energy were evaluated, using biogas for five residences and for production activities, in comparison to the annual costs of the biodigestion system construction and operation. The results showed economic feasibility of the biogas production in both cases. It was generated economic benefits of US$ 1,766.84 and US$ 4,338.54 per year for the residential biodigestion system and production activities biodigestion system, respectively, as well as US$ 706.20 per year for biofertilizer production. The costs were estimated in US$ 582.18 per year in each biodigestion system. The pay-back was evaluated in 2.5 years for the residential case and 11 months for the production case, respectively. These results can be used to formulate public policies directed to biomass exploitation to produce low cost energy focused on familiar agriculture.</text>
