In this paper we chart the history of selected metaphors that have been used to describe Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) over the last 15 years. Martin Weller famously claimed in 2007 that “the VLE is dead”. This provocation positioned the VLE as an object of history, forcing us to consider its past, present and future. This notion of historical mapping is important as many educational technologies that failed to deliver on their promises can be easily forgotten. Hence, we sought to develop a short history of VLE metaphors. Using a defined search and selection strategy we selected 30 metaphors spanning a 15-year period from 2004 to 2019 derived from a variety of sources ranging from social media to scholarly publications. We first arranged the metaphors according to a chronological timeline. Next we sought to unpack their significance by thematically analysing them using the notion of metaphorical concepts. Through this thematic analysis, six organizing metaphorical concepts were generated: Straitjacket, Behemoth, Digital Carpark, Safe Space, Smorgasbord and Pathfinder. We then used these metaphorical concepts as a lens, to map and explore historical developments and debates over the past two decades of educational technology. As the world scrambles to go online during the COVID-19 pandemic there has never been a more important time to remember and reflect upon digital learning history. Through this work we contribute to the history of educational technology by remembering its metaphors and what they have taught us. After we had navigated these historical seas, we noticed that the VLE was still here, as a limpet resolutely awaiting the next wave.

An agroecological Voisin’s Rational Grazing production system was established in 2013 in Barinas, Venezuela, with the aim of studying a sustainable agroecological route in acid-sandy soils. A pasture of 27 ha with Urochloa brizantha and Urochloa ruziziensis was divided in 64 paddocks. Four treatments were established: application of a single dose of 1.5 Mg ha-1 asphaltic emulsion; single dose of 440 kg ha-1 of phosphoric rock; asphaltic emulsion with phosphoric rock, with the same previous dose, and control, only with Voisin’s Rational Grazing. Four replicates of each treatment were established in 16 randomly chosen paddocks in which periodic soil and vegetation samplings were carried out. The highest yields of dried matter in t ha-1 yr-1 of pasture corresponded to asphaltic emulsion (34-62) and asphaltic emulsion with phosphoric rock (54-48) in comparison to the control (22-31) and phosphoric rock (24-25) treatments, for years 2015 and 2016, respectively. This brought about better quality pastures, from the first year of the management the pasture yields tripled and an increase of the animal load from 1.2 to 3.7 LU ha-1 between 2015 and 2016, and to 4.3 LU ha-1 in 2017 was achieved. Applying a single dose of asphaltic emulsion aided to accelerate the regular increases with time. The labile fractions of P showed that Voisin’s Rational Grazing induced a high phosphoric fertility which displaced phosphorous as the main limiting factor in primary productivity of these soils of low natural fertility, that are widely distributed in savannah ecosystems and the Neotropic.

HydroSOStainable table olives (cultivar Manzanilla) are produced from olive trees grown under regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategies. Olives produced by RDI are known to have a higher content of some bioactive compounds (e.g. polyphenols), but no information about consumer acceptance (or liking) have been reported so far. In this study, the volatile composition, the sensory profile and the consumer opinion and willingness to pay (at three locations) for HydroSOStainable table olives produced from three RDI treatments and a control were studied. Volatile composition was affected by RDI, by increasing alcohols, ketones and phenolic compounds in some treatments, while others led to a decrease in esters and the content of organic acids. Descriptive sensory analysis (10 panelists) showed an increase of green-olive flavor with a decrease of bitterness in the HydroSOStainable samples. Consumers (study done with 100 consumers in 2-rural and 1-urban locations; ntotal = 300), after being informed about the HydroSOStainable concept, preferred HydroSOStainable table olives to the conventional samples and were willing to pay a higher price for them (52% 1.35−1.75 € and 32% 1.75−2.50 € as compared to the regular price of 1.25 € for a 200 g bag). Finally, green-olive flavor, hardness, crunchiness, bitterness, sweetness and saltiness were defined as the attributes driving consumer acceptance of HydroSOStainable table olives.

The interest in the study of microbiological interactions mediated by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has steadily increased in the last few years. Nevertheless, most assays still rely on the use of non-specific materials. We present a new tool, the volatile organic compound chamber (VOC chamber), specifically designed to perform these experiments. The novel devices were tested using four Trichoderma strains against Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani. We demonstrate that VOC chambers provide higher sensitivity and selectivity between treatments and higher homogeneity of results than the traditional method. VOC chambers are also able to test both vented and non-vented conditions. We prove that ventilation plays a very important role regarding volatile interactions, up to the point that some growth-inhibitory effects observed in closed environments switch to promoting ones when tested in vented conditions. This promoting activity seems to be related to the accumulation of squalene by T. harzianum. The VOC chambers proved to be an easy, homogeneous, flexible, and repeatable method, able to better select microorganisms with high biocontrol activity and to guide the future identification of new bioactive VOCs and their role in microbial interactions.

Disparities and price fluctuations in archipelagos regions such as NTT province can create inter-regional garlic price volatility. The distribution pattern of garlic trading in NTT is often hampered by limited marketing infrastructure, distribution network, and asymmetric information. This study measures the spillover volatility and the trend of garlic prices between regions in the NTT domestic market. This study uses time-series data onto garlic prices in Kupang City and Maumere City. Data period, price months from July 2016 to May 2020. The volatility analysis uses the ARCH / GARCH approach and the volatility spillover uses GARCH-BEKK. Analysis of price movements observed trends in price behavior before and entering the Covid-19 pandemic using graphical analysis. The study results concluded that the volatility of garlic prices in Kupang and Maumere is relatively low. Compared to the two regions, the price volatility in Maumereh is higher than in Kupang. The same thing happened to the level of price fluctuation in Maumere which was higher than in Kupang. Price volatility movements towards / away the two regions are not related to each other because these two regions receive garlic supplies outside NTT. Several factors can be the cause, including differences in marketing infrastructure, and different transportation networks between regions, the openness of price information. Therefore, transparency of price information and improvement of distribution networks to ensure the balance of supply and demand needs to be considered by all parties, especially regulators.

The work investigates the volatility connectedness between oil price and clean energy firms over the period 2011–2020 (including the COVID-19 outbreak). Using the volatility spillover models, and dynamic conditional correlation, we are able to identify the volatility spillover effect between these financial markets and its implications for portfolio diversification. The results indicate a significant change in both static and dynamic volatility connectedness around the COVID-19 outbreak. For instance, total connectedness index changes from 21.36% (pre-COVID-19) to 61.23% (COVID-19). This finding shows the strong effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on these financial markets. Furthermore, we show how the WTI oil from the volatility transmitter (before the outbreak of the pandemic) becomes a risk receiver after the start of the global pandemic COVID-19. Our findings indicate that recent pandemic intensified volatility spillovers, supporting the financial contagion effects. Finally, we determine the optimal hedge ratios and portfolio weights. The estimates provided suggest the need for active portfolio management, taking into account the distinct characteristics of each sector and thus, the firm. For example, the optimal weight analysis shows how the clean sector has become important in optimal diversification strategies. Our results can be used for portfolio decisions and regulatory policymaking, particularly in the current context of high uncertainty.

Las erupciones volcánicas son disturbios naturales que imponen múltiples cambios en los ecosistemas. Los artrópodos se ubican entre los organismos más diversos del planeta y desempeñan un papel clave en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Sin embargo, la información existente sobre los efectos de los disturbios volcánicos sobre ellos es dispersa. El objetivo de esta revisión es identificar generalidades en las respuestas de los artrópodos al vulcanismo. Principalmente, (1) ¿qué efecto tienen las erupciones volcánicas sobre los artrópodos?, (2) ¿qué características hacen que ciertas especies sean más resistentes al vulcanismo?, (3) ¿cómo se ensamblan sus comunidades después de una erupción? Los artrópodos terrestres y acuáticos muestran respuestas similares al vulcanismo, que afecta a sus poblaciones y comunidades, y los ecosistemas a través de las funciones que los artrópodos realizan. La mayoría de los estudios que evaluaron el efecto de la ceniza volcánica encontraron efectos negativos sobre la mortalidad y diferente susceptibilidad entre especies. La mortalidad en una misma especie varía según la cantidad de ceniza y la forma de exposición (contacto con el cuerpo, alimentos contaminados, modificación del hábitat), y la humedad relativa. En las pocas comunidades de artrópodos donde se estudiaron los efectos de las erupciones volcánicas, la riqueza, composición y abundancia de las especies son afectadas de alguna forma. Identifiqué rasgos morfológicos, fisiológicos, comportamentales y de historia de vida que parecen importantes para determinar respuestas de las especies al vulcanismo. Sin embargo, los conocimientos actuales son limitados y acotados a pocas erupciones volcánicas. L., afectado y muerto por la oruga de Anacamptodes sp., durante 2010-2011. Se establecieron 10 unidades de muestreo (UM) de forma rectangular de 20 x 50 m para evaluación permanente. Se registró el estado sanitario de los árboles, el diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP 13 m), la altura total y altura del fuste limpio (Ht y Hfl). Se calculó el área basal (AB m2ha-1), Volumen total y del fuste limpio (Vt y Vfl m3ha-1) y se estimó la densidad de árboles por especie. Los valores obtenidos se arreglaron en clases diamétricas con una amplitud de 5 cm. Se realizó un análisis de correlación lineal simple entre la altura y el DAP. En total se evaluaron 1,831 árboles de tres especies, tres géneros y tres familias botánicas. El mangle negro representó 99.6% del total de árboles evaluados; la densidad varió de 750 hasta 2,520 árboles por ha-1. El 42.9% de los árboles registrados mostraban partes vivas y el 57.1% estaban totalmente muertos. Específicamente, el mangle negro registró un Vt de 68.3 m3 ha-1, Vfl de 24.6 m3 ha-1y un AB de 12.4 m2 ha-1. La categoría de 5 - 9.9 cm de DAP registró el 45% de los árboles identificados. La correlación del DAP y la altura del mangle negro, fue moderada positiva significativa (r² = 0.5313, p = 2.2 e-16).

From close to scratch, the COVID-19 pandemic created the largest volunteer supercomputer on earth. Sadly, processing resources assigned to the corresponding Folding@home project cannot be shared with other volunteer computing projects efficiently. Consequently, the largest supercomputer had significant idle times. This perspective paper investigates how the resource sharing of future volunteer computing projects could be improved. Notably, efficient resource sharing has been optimized throughout the last ten years in cloud computing. Therefore, this perspective paper reviews the current state of volunteer and cloud computing to analyze what both domains could learn from each other. It turns out that the disclosed resource sharing shortcomings of volunteer computing could be addressed by technologies that have been invented, optimized, and adapted for entirely different purposes by cloud-native companies like Uber, Airbnb, Google, or Facebook. Promising technologies might be containers, serverless architectures, image registries, distributed service registries, and all have one thing in common: They already exist and are all tried and tested in large web-scale deployments.
