However, there is no consensus about to what extent (order of oligonucleotides or length of words) strand symmetry still persists. To determine the extent of strand symmetry in genomic sequences is critically important for the further understanding of the phenomenon. Based on previous studies, we have developed an algorithm for the novel word symmetry distance analysis. We applied it to evaluate the higher-order strand symmetry for 206 archaeal genomes and 2,659 bacterial genomes. Our results show that the new approach could provide a clear-cut criterion to determine the extent of strand symmetry for a group of genomes or individual genomes. According to the new measure, strand symmetry would tend to persist for up to 8-mers in archaeal genomes, and up to 9-mers in bacterial genomes. And the persistence may vary from 6- to 9-mers in individual genomes. Moreover, higher-order strand symmetry would tend to positively correlate with GC content and mononucleotide symmetry levels of genomic sequences. The variations of higher-order strand symmetry among genomes would indicate that strand symmetry itself may not be strictly relevant to biological functions, which would provide some insights into the origin and evolution of the phenomenon. Os resultados do estudo foram satisfatórios, com 98% de aprovação para as melhorias adotadas nos requisitos estudados. Our study aimed to quantify the performance of available antigen-detecting rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) in a real-world hospital setting. In this retrospective analysis, the diagnostic performance of 7 Ag-RDTs was compared with real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay in terms of sensitivity, specificity and expected predictive values. A total of 321 matched Ag-RDTreal-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction samples were analyzed retrospectively. The overall sensitivity and specificity of the Ag-RDTs was 78.7% and 100%, respectively. However, a wide range of sensitivity estimates by brand (66.0%-93.8%) and cycle threshold (Ct) cut-off values (Ct <25: 96.2%; Ct 30-35: 31.1%) was observed. The optimal Ct cut-off value that maximized sensitivity was 29. The routine use of Ag-RDTs may be convenient in moderate-to-high intensity settings when high volumes of specimens are tested every day. However, the diagnostic performance of the commercially available tests may differ substantially. Na sociedade contemporânea, o sofrimento social emerge como uma categoria importante na vida das pessoas em razão da impossibilidade de acesso a bens e serviços por uma parcela da população. No mundo rural, o sofrimento pode estar relacionado à perda dos meios de produção, condicionada pela posse da terra. Este trabalho estruturou-se em busca de compreender como esse sofrimento manifesta-se em um grupo de trabalhadores rurais assentados no município de Campos de Júlio. Com esse objetivo, foram entrevistados oito trabalhadores que possuíam lotes no Assentamento Rural Nova Esperança. As reflexões apontam para disputas na ocupação e uma luta pela terra acarretadas pela configuração do agronegócio local, conflitos que repercutem na subjetividade dos trabalhadores da agricultura familiar. Por outro lado, a luta pela terra gerou união entre membros do grupo como forma de resistência às pressões externas ao assentamento. Mesmo imersos em um ambiente estrutural de opressão e de negação, lograram desenvolver estratégias de defesa frente ao sofrimento social, que fortaleceram o grupo de trabalhadores assentados.
