Entre los principales problemas sociales globales se encuentra el acceso a alimentos saludables. En Argentina, la problemática alimentaria se manifiesta principalmente como subconsumo de vitaminas y minerales y una alta tasa de obesidad, especialmente en sectores populares. Entre las alternativas de acceso a una alimentación saludable, se ha propuesta la Agricultura Urbana, específicamente las huertas familiares traspatio de base agroecológica. Este trabajo buscó indagar, a partir de un caso específico, sobre el aporte nutricional efectivo de una huerta traspatio agroecológica, especialmente en vitaminas y minerales, el grado de autoabastecimiento logrado para satisfacer las demandas alimentarias de una familia tipo y la superficie cultivada que sería necesaria para cubrir dicha demanda. Para ello se trabajó con la producción de una huerta de 152 m. ubicada en La Matanza (Buenos Aires) y sostenida por trabajo familiar. Se recabaron los datos de un año y se estimó el aporte anual en distintos minerales y vitaminas para cada especie cultivada. La productividad anual obtenida fue de 7,42 kg/m.. La oferta de vitaminas A, B9, K y C sería excedentaria para una familia tipo. El aporte de fósforo y hierro fue cercano al autoabastecimiento. Hubo déficits considerables en vitaminas E y K, mientras que el aporte más bajo fue de sodio, con 18% de las demandas diarias. Las superficies mínimas necesarias para cubrir las demandas familiares fueron muy variables, con 15,9 m. para vitamina K y 870,8 m. para los requisitos de sodio. Se determinó que las huertas traspatio pueden ser una fuente de provisión interesante en contextos urbanos, especialmente para ciertas vitaminas y minerales. Sería conveniente ampliar este tipo de trabajos a estudios transversales con representatividad estadística a nivel regional.

To prevent the community spread of the virus, the Indian Government imposed a nationwide lockdown. Though initially successful to some extent in containing the disease spread, the extended lockdown eventually leads to a spiraling out effect resulting in the slowdown of the economy, which, in turn, lead to widespread consequences affecting the lives of millions of people, mostly those at the base of the social pyramid. We investigated the implications of few government policies taken during this pandemic and their impact on society, thereby suggesting short-term crisis management with long-term solutions. Here, we present a comprehensive account of Indian policy in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, balancing both economic and public health. We also explored a future contingency plan for risk mitigation along with few recommendations. This viewpoint will be useful for effective healthcare management and the economy in Asia’s populous nation in the COVID-19 and prepare for a future crisis of this nature.Keywords: COVID-19, India, economic crisis, healthcare, vaccination, management

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar os efeitos de faixas de guandu (Cajanus cajan) e da incorporação da biomassa proveniente de sua poda na fertilidade do solo e na produtividade de três hortaliças sob cultivo orgânico. O delineamento usado foi de blocos casualizados completos em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas com três repetições. As produtividades de beterraba, cenoura e feijão-de-vagem não foram afetadas pelos tratamentos. Nas parcelas onde não houve incorporação da biomassa de guandu, o balanço de nitrogênio no sistema foi negativo, ao passo que com a incorporação, esse balanço foi positivo. Embora tenha ocorrido balanço positivo para o fósforo nas parcelas sem a incorporação de biomassa de guandu, houve um aumento significativo na absorção desse elemento pelas hortaliças quando o material foi incorporado. O sistema de cultivo em aléias de guandu pode representar uma prática vantajosa para os produtores orgânicos, por contribuir na manutenção da fertilidade do solo.The objectives of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) biomass incorporation to the soil as well as the effect of presence or absence of pigeonpea hedgerows on soil fertility and productivity of three vegetables, beet, carrot and dwarf green bean. Samples were randomly taken in a block design with three replications for each crop. In the field, no other fertilization treatment was applied. In plots without biomass incorporation, nitrogen showed negative balance, whereas in the field with biomass incorporation a high positive N-balance was found. Concerning phosphorus, positive balances were determined in plots without biomass incorporation, however, the uptake of P increased significantly after biomass incorporation in all crops used. The results indicate that pigeonpea alley cropping system may represent an advantageous option for organic farmers to maintain or to improve soil fertility.

Os insumos e serviços utilizados na produção vegetal representam custo energético. Dependendo desses fatores e das produtividades obtidas, a conversão da produção em energia determinará a eficiência energética do sistema. A agricultura orgânica somente atingirá a missão de preservação ambiental se tiver comprovada sustentabilidade energética. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se caracterizar os balanços energéticos dos cultivos orgânicos e analisar sua sustentabilidade, em comparação aos sistemas convencionais. Monitoraram-se campos de produção de dez culturas, de 1991 a 2000 em Domingos Martins-ES. Os dados do sistema convencional foram obtidos pelas médias dos coeficientes técnicos da região. Quantificaram-se os coeficientes técnicos, convertendo suas grandezas físicas em equivalentes energéticos, expressos em kcal. O sistema orgânico gastou 4.571.159 kcal ha-1 e apresentou 12.696.712 kcal ha-1 de energia inserida na colheita, mostrando balanço médio de 2,78. Esse valor foi similar ao obtido no sistema convencional (1,93). As participações dos componentes nos gastos do sistema orgânico foram embalagem (35,8%), composto orgânico (17,2%), irrigação (12,6%), sementes/mudas (12,4%) e mão-de-obra (11,0%), serviços mecânicos (5,0%) e frete (4,5%). Se os custos com embalagens fossem eliminados, os gastos do sistema orgânico seriam reduzidos para 2.930.113 kcal ha-1, aumentando sua eficiência. A maioria dos cultivos orgânicos pode ser considerada sustentável em transformação de energia, com balanços superiores a 1,00 e produção média diária de 80.421 kcal ha-1 por dia, superior à necessidade mínima de 58.064 kcal ha-1.The inputs used in crop production represent an energetic cost. Depending on the inputs and on the achieved yields, the conversion of the harvest into energy will determine the energetic efficiency of the system. Organic agriculture will fully meet the goal of environmental conservation only if its energetic sustainability is accomplished. The objectives of this study were to characterize the energetic balance of organic vegetable production and to analyze its energetic sustainability, compared to conventional vegetable crop production systems. Field data were collected from ten vegetable crop fields, from 1991 to 2000 in Domingos Martins, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Data from the conventional system were obtained in the region. The technical coefficients of the systems were quantified and converted to an energy equivalent (kcal). The general average of the organic system was an input of 4,571,159 kcal ha-1 and an output of 12,696,712 kcal ha-1 at harvest, presenting an energetic balance of 2.78. This balance was similar to the conventional system (1,93). The components of the energetic inputs in the organic system were packaging (35,8%), organic compost (17,2%), irrigation (12,6%), seeds/seedlings (12,4%) and labor (11,0%), machinery (5,0%) and transport (4,5%). If package costs were removed, the energetic inputs on the organic system would be reduced to 2,930,113 kcal ha-1, greatly improving its energetic efficiency. Most of the crops could be considered sustainable regarding energy conversion, presenting balances higher than 1.00. The daily average energy yield in the organic system was 80,421 kcal ha-1 day-1 and was considered sustainable, higher than the minimum estimated calories need (58.064 kcal ha-1).

Introducción. En la actualidad los bananos son las frutas más consumidas en el mundo, considerados como cultivos estratégicos en la seguridad alimentaria de muchos países. Sin embargo, ante la eventual pandemia de COVID-19, se generan efectos colaterales que afectan su actividad económica a nivel mundial. Objetivo. Señalar los rasgos más significativos de los bananos en relación con su importancia en el ámbito económico y productivo ante las condiciones generadas por la pandemia COVID-19, así como las amenazas fitosanitarias actuales como factores limitantes para su producción. Desarrollo. El banano es la base de la economía y dieta de muchos países, ocupa un importante lugar en la producción y comercio internacional, al ser la fruta más exportada, representado en su mayoría por triploides AAA Cavendish. Su consumo aporta vitaminas, minerales y otros elementos con propiedades medicinales como la lectina, que puede actuar como agente antiviral de amplio espectro. No obstante, en la actualidad se ha generado disrupciones en el suministro del mismo, lo que afecta todos los elementos de la cadena productiva, producto de la situación originada por la COVID-19. Conclusiones. La pandemia del coronavirus ha generado efectos colaterales que involucra diversas áreas como la producción y comercio de bananos y se encuentran asociados al aislamiento social y restricción de movilidad. Sin embargo, se considera que el banano seguirá siendo la fruta más importante dentro de ese rubro, destacándose entre los cultivos de más rápido crecimiento en la agricultura, a pesar de las condiciones originadas por la COVID-19 y la existencia de muchas incertidumbres causadas por enfermedades emergentes y perturbaciones climáticas, que pueden afectar su entorno económico y productivo.

Abstract Background Single-cell sequencing experiments use short DNA barcode ‘tags’ to identify reads that originate from the same cell. In order to recover single-cell information from such experiments, reads must be grouped based on their barcode tag, a crucial processing step that precedes other computations. However, this step can be difficult due to high rates of mismatch and deletion errors that can afflict barcodes. Results Here we present an approach to identify and error-correct barcodes by traversing the de Bruijn graph of circularized barcode k-mers. Our approach is based on the observation that circularizing a barcode sequence can yield error-free k-mers even when the size of k is large relative to the length of the barcode sequence, a regime which is typical single-cell barcoding applications. This allows for assignment of reads to consensus fingerprints constructed from k-mers. Conclusion We show that for single-cell RNA-Seq circularization improves the recovery of accurate single-cell transcriptome estimates, especially when there are a high number of errors per read. This approach is robust to the type of error (mismatch, insertion, deletion), as well as to the relative abundances of the cells. Sircel, a software package that implements this approach is described and publically available.
