                <text>Este trabalho foi realizado na Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Areia, PB, entre janeiro a junho de 2013, com o objetivo de avaliar a produtividade de frutos de maxixe adubado com esterco bovino e biofertilizante, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, com os fatores cinco doses de esterco bovino (0, 15, 30, 45 e 60 t ha-1) e presença e ausência de biofertilizante no solo. As doses de 26,3 e 27,7 t ha-1 de esterco bovino foram responsáveis pelas máximas produtividades comerciais de frutos de maxixe de 12,4 e 10,0 t ha-1, respectivamente, com e sem biofertilizante. A dose de esterco responsável pela máxima produção de frutos na presença do biofertilizante se correlacionou com 18,6 g dm-3 de matéria orgânica residual no solo enquanto que na ausência do biofertilizante a correlação foi 20,0 g dm-3. Os teores máximos de N, P e K foliar no maxixeiro foram de 46,4, 3,7 e 26,0 g kg-1 com as doses de 60,0, 29,6 e 60,0 t ha-1 de esterco bovino com biofertilizante, respectivamente. Para os tratamentos que não receberam biofertilizantes os teores de N, P e K foliar foram de 40,0, 3,0 e 20,0 g kg-1, com as doses de 60,0, 29,6 e 60,0 t ha-1 de esterco bovino, respectivamente.</text>

                <text>In the past two decades an evident dichotomy has been established between policies of a productive nature and those aimed at social assistance for family farms in Brazil. The purpose of this article is to analyze this duality in the main public policies for family farming, and presents a quantitative overview of the results. From a methodological perspective the analysis was based on the number of farmers who benefit from the agrarian reform policies, rural credit, institutional food markets, rural social security and income transfer. The main results of this study indicate that the economic support for the productive activities of Brazilian family farming have been concentrated among the intermediary and well-established farms that are inserted in markets. In parallel, most family farmers are relegated to social assistance programs and not integrated to the working agendas of the main professional organizations in agriculture.</text>

                <text>A migração de agricultores familiares para zonas urbanas costuma ser analisada em termos de êxodo rural. Este artigo mobiliza a noção de multilocalização familiar para discutir distintos fluxos de recursos (alimento, financeiro e trabalho) entre integrantes de unidades agrícolas familiares que permanecem e as que residem fora dessas unidades. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa junto a 49 famílias de agricultores da região Oeste de Santa Catarina, escolhidas de forma a contemplar a diversidade socioeconômica da agricultura familiar regional. Dentre os principais resultados, constatou-se que a metade dessas famílias é multilocalizada e que as unidades agrícolas inseridas em mercados competitivos são mais multilocalizadas do que aquelas pouco integradas a esses mercados e com rendas menores. O principal recurso intercambiado é alimentação da unidade agrícola para os integrantes externos, reforçando a importância da produção para autoconsumo tanto para quem permaneceu quanto para quem migrou, mas que reside próximo e mantém vínculos com a família agrícola.</text>

                <text>The paper analyzes how the issue of sustainability is reflected in the design and incorporation of public policies on rural credit in Brazil. The research used a qualitative approach in order to understand the meaning that social actors give to the idea of sustainability, how they interpret their own experiences and face conflicting situations generated around the subject. Its theoretical and methodological focus was based on the neo-institutionalist approach called “three Is”, and takes as an empirical basis the functioning of rural credit policies present in the Contested Midwest Territory of Santa Catarina, with emphasis on the National Strengthening Program for Family Farming (Pronaf). It seems that the incorporation of sustainability will include the general guidelines of the Pronaf, but this conceptual breakthrough hardly translates into practical results at the establishments of small farmers and their social and economic organizations. Such findings indicate that there is still a long way to go for the idea of sustainability to be fully incorporated by Pronaf, reorienting their operational standards and the behavior of the actors towards sustainable development.</text>

                <text>Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability.A produção agrícola tem de combinar práticas para prover a sustentabilidade do solo. A agricultura orgânica está ganhando aceitação mundial e cresce à taxa anual de 20% na última década, contabilizando mais de 24 milhões de hectares. As práticas orgânicas evitam o uso de fertilizantes sintéticos e pesticidas, enfatiza a aplicação de matéria orgânica, como também a reciclagem de nutrientes e de processos biológicos para manejo de pragas, através das regras dos sistemas orgânicos no mundo. Em comparação com a agricultura convencional, os sistemas orgânicos têm potencial de melhorar a qualidade e a segurança dos alimentos. A produção das plantas no sistema orgânico depende da liberação de nutrientes pelo processo de mineralização microbiana no solo. A construção de uma grande e ativa biomassa microbiana é um importante reservatório de nutrientes disponíveis. Dessa forma, isso é uma prioridade no sistema orgânico. Em sistemas orgânicos, há efeitos positivos da quantidade e da qualidade das fontes de carbono orgânico sobre a biomassa microbiana do solo. Nesse sentido, as práticas do sistema orgânico são extremamente importantes para o aumento da fertilidade do solo e para a manutenção da sustentabilidade ambiental.</text>

                <text>O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade biológica do solo em um sistema de policultivo comparado com outros sistemas de uso do solo, em áreas localizadas na região do semiárido baiano. As avaliações foram realizadas em áreas mantidas sob três diferentes sistemas de uso do solo: plantio convencional, caatinga e policultivo. As amostras foram coletadas em um transecto com 5 pontos, espaçados de 5 metros, à uma profundidade de 0 - 0,1 m. Dentro de cada local, o delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos (uso do solo) e cinco repetições. Foi realizada a análise de variância e aplicou-se o teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. Foram avaliados dois parâmetros de qualidade biológica do solo: a atividade microbiana (AM) ou respiração basal e carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM). O sistema de uso caatinga foi o que apresentou maior CBM, com incrementos de 104% e 244% em Cafarnaum e 69% e 499% em Umburanas, comparado aos sistemas policultivo e convencional, respectivamente. Quanto a AM, o sistema policultivo apresentou acréscimos de 164% e 414% em Cafarnaum e 97% e 360% em Umburanas, comparado aos sistemas caatinga e convencional, respectivamente. O teor de carbono da biomassa microbiana no solo do bioma caatinga é maior do que nos sistemas policultivo e convencional. Entretanto, a atividade microbiana do solo no sistema de policultivo é maior comparada com os outros dois sistemas de cultivo. A qualidade biológica do solo no sistema policultivo e bioma caatinga se sobressaem em relação ao sistema convencional na região semiárida da Bahia.</text>

                <text>A institucionalização da Agricultura Familiar em meados de 2006, através da lei 11.326 no Brasil, representou enorme avanço para os pequenos agricultores. Contudo, já havia meios institucionais de crédito desde 1996 através do PRONAF. Observa-se que os agentes financeiros públicos agem de acordo com o mercado, pela alegação da existência do risco de classificação do pleiteador do empréstimo, o que elevam os custos contratuais para os produtores familiares. O objetivo desse artigo é analisar os impactos da assimetria informacional com seus desdobramentos, sobre a eficácia e eficiência da política de crédito do PRONAF. A metodologia utilizada será a revisão da literatura com proposição de um modelo teórico capaz de analisar quantitativamente e qualitativamente os resultados obtidos pelo PRONAF e os impactos sobre o planejamento e desenvolvimento regional. O resultado esperado foi a constatação de que a política pública de crédito para agricultura familiar é vislumbrada como serviço público ou serviço privado pelas instituições bancárias públicas.</text>

                <text>First paragraph:  Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) all over the world, countries have tried several strategies to minimize its impacts on their citizens and the economy. The first case in Nigeria was reported on February 27, 2020, and since then the infection has been spreading like wildfire, making Nigeria one of the three most affected African countries in Africa and the most affected in West Africa (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [FAO], 2020-a). To slow down its pace, governments at all levels have taken measures to curb its impacts. Measures taken include mandating social distancing, curfews, and, in some cases, complete lockdowns. The lockdown of virtually all sectors of the economy, especially the agricultural sector, has exacerbated food shortages in the country, espe­cially among urban dwellers. Unfortunately, agriculture in most developing countries is highly related to physical, rather than mechanized, labor. The labor shortage due to movement restrictions (both intra- and interstate) and social distancing as a result of COVID-19 are starting to affect agricultural producers in the hinterlands, thus worsening the food supply to urban centers that are coincidentally the epicenters of the disease.</text>
