                <text>The goal of this study is to determine the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL) in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 results in increased inflammatory markers previously associated with atrial arrhythmias. However, little is known about their incidence or specificity in COVID-19 or their association with outcomes. This is a retrospective analysis of 3,970 patients admitted with polymerase chain reaction-positive COVID-19 between February 4 and April 22, 2020, with manual review performed of 1,110. The comparator arm included 1,420 patients with influenza hospitalized between January 1, 2017, and January 1, 2020. Among 3,970 inpatients with COVID-19, the incidence of AF/AFL was 10% (n = 375) and in patients without a history of atrial arrhythmias it was 4% (n = 146). Patients with new-onset AF/AFL were older with increased inflammatory markers including interleukin 6 (93 vs. 68 pg/ml, p &lt; 0.01), and more myocardial injury (troponin-I: 0.2 vs. 0.06 ng/ml, p &lt; 0.01). AF and AFL were associated with increased mortality (46% vs. 26%, p &lt; 0.01). Manual review captured a somewhat higher incidence of AF/AFL (13%, n = 140). Compared to inpatients with COVID-19, patients with influenza (n = 1,420) had similar rates of AF/AFL (12%, n = 163) but lower mortality. The presence of AF/AFL correlated with similarly increased mortality in both COVID-19 (relative risk: 1.77) and influenza (relative risk: 1.78). AF/AFL occurs in a subset of patients hospitalized with either COVID-19 or influenza and is associated with inflammation and disease severity in both infections. The incidence and associated increase in mortality in both cohorts suggests that AF/AFL is not specific to COVID-19, but is rather a generalized response to the systemic inflammation of severe viral illnesses.</text>

                <text>The SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) spike is the largest known viral spike molecule, and shares a similar function with all class 1 viral fusion proteins. Previous structural studies of membrane fusion proteins have largely used crystallography of static molecular fragments, in isolation of their transmembrane domains. In this study we have produced purified, irradiated SARS-CoV virions that retain their morphology, and are fusogenic in cell culture. We used cryo-electron microscopy and image processing to investigate conformational changes that occur in the entire spike of intact virions when they bind to the viral receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). We have shown that ACE2 binding results in structural changes that appear to be the initial step in viral membrane fusion, and precisely localized the receptor-binding and fusion core domains within the entire spike. Furthermore, our results show that receptor binding and subsequent membrane fusion are distinct steps, and that each spike can bind up to three ACE2 molecules. The SARS-CoV spike provides an ideal model system to study receptor binding and membrane fusion in the native state, employing cryo-electron microscopy and single-particle image analysis.</text>

                <text>With the onset of the global pandemic in 2020 of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), there has been increasing research activity around certain disease-modifying drugs that are used for the management of inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthrosis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and inflammatory bowel disease for managing coronavirus symptoms. In the conditions mentioned, many people are on long-term treatment with agents including hydroxychloroquine, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) inhibitor drugs, other biologic agents such as monoclonal antibodies to IL-6 and Janus kinase inhibitors including baricitinib and tofacitinib, which are used to control inflammatory responses in their respective auto-immune condition. There is emerging data that immunomodulatory drugs could be protective at reducing certain features of SARS-CoV-2 and improving recovery. In addition, it is important to understand if subjects being treated with the immunomodulatory agents described have a less severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, as they are deemed some protection from their immunomodulatory treatment, or if they develop infections similar to non-immunocompromised patients. There is a huge unmet clinical need to advise patients responsibly about whether they should remain on their immunomodulatory treatment or not in light of Covid-19 infection. In this article we will discuss potential treatment options for SARS-CoV-2 using immunomodulatory drugs and at what stage of the condition they may be beneficial. Viable treatment options during the global coronavirus pandemic are a much-needed and an intensely active area of research.</text>

We evaluated whether cycle threshold (Ct) values (which are inversely related to virus load) were associated with clinical severity in patients from Saudi Arabia whose nasopharyngeal specimens tested positive for this virus by real-time reverse transcription PCR. Among 102 patients, median Ct of 31.0 for the upstream of the E gene target for 41 (40%) patients who died was significantly lower than the median of 33.0 for 61 survivors (p = 0.0087). In multivariable regression analyses, risk factors for death were age &gt;60 years), underlying illness, and decreasing Ct for each 1-point decrease in Ct). Results were similar for a composite severe outcome (death and/or intensive care unit admission). More data are needed to determine whether modulation of virus load by therapeutic agents affects clinical outcomes.</text>

                <text>Durante miles de años el hombre ha estado usando la genética para lograr la mejora de las materias primas y productos alimenticios terminados. Mediante el uso del cruce sexual y la aparición de mutantes espontáneos se ha generado un gran número de variedades vegetales, razas animales y cepas microbianas. De hecho, la biotecnología de los alimentos es la más antigua de todas las biotecnologías. Recientemente, las técnicas de ADN recombinante se han aplicado en la tecnología de alimentos creando los llamados alimentos modificados genéticamente o alimentos transgénicos. Ejemplos de este tipo de productos son unas patatas transgénicas que funcionan como una vacuna oral contra el cólera, unas levaduras vínicas transgénicas capaces de producir vino con aroma más afrutado o vacas u ovejas que producen leche con altos niveles de proteínas terapéuticas. En cualquier caso, la fecha de partida para el futuro de la biotecnología de los alimentos fue la publicación en 2001 del primer borrador del genoma humano: este descubrimiento abrió la puerta a la búsqueda de genes de nuestro genoma que se activan o desactivan en respuesta a la ingesta de nutrientes específicos. No solo eso, hoy en día también es posible determinar las diferencias genéticas entre individuos que producen diferentes respuestas nutricionales. Además cada día se publican en las bases de datos varios nuevos genomas de animales, plantas o microorganismos que son componentes habituales de nuestra dieta. Algunos casos sobresalientes son los genomas del arroz, la levadura del pan, la bacteria probiótica Bifidobacterium bifidum o patógenos responsables de la intoxicación alimentaria, como Escherichia coli. Estos datos proporcionan información sobre genes clave, con la que es posible diseñar estrategias de mejora por genética clásica o ingeniería clásica, delimitar los mecanismos de defensa para combatir la patogenicidad o definir nuevas funciones fisiológicas. Su aplicación a la alimentación y la nutrición está mucho más próxima de lo que muchos imaginan.</text>

                <text>Los avances en biotecnología genética y las políticas neoliberales de mercado han 				puesto al alcance de las grandes compañías multinacionales nuevos espacios de 				interés, como las semillas. En torno a estos ';territorios interiores'; están teniendo 				lugar toda una serie de procesos de puesta en valor, patrimonialización, 				apropiación, legislación y representación. A su vez, a nivel local proliferan por toda 				la geografía del planeta diferentes respuestas y fenómenos de recuperación y 				preservación de la biodiversidad genética y cultural, así como de los conocimientos 				tradicionales a ésta asociados, en forma de bancos de semillas autóctonas. Una de 				estas iniciativas impulsada por el grupo de voluntariado Galtzagorriak y el sindicato 				agrario EHNE se lleva a cabo en el marco de la reserva de la Biosfera de Urdaibai 				(Bizkaia) con la especificidad legislativa que le da el Plan de Uso y Gestión de la 				Reserva. 				La antropología socio-cultural nos ofrece distintos marcos de análisis para 				acercarnos a las diversas caras que presenta esta problemática medioambiental a 				nivel social, cultural, político y representacional. En estas notas se recoge un 				esbozo de enfoque teórico para abordar estos fenómenos.</text>

                <text>El género Polylepis es endémico de las montañas de Sudamérica. Sus especies frecuentemente dominan la canopia de bosques y arbustales cuya conservación y restauración son una prioridad a nivel continental. En Argentina, el género incluye cinco especies que se distribuyen en las montañas del centro y noroeste del país. Sus distribuciones, amenazas y estados de conservación están poco documentados e incluso existen fuertes controversias sobre el grado en que el Hombre ha impactado en la cobertura, la estructura y la distribución de estos bosques. Para contribuir a revertir esta situación confeccionamos modelos potenciales por especie que sugieren 14800 km2 aptos para la presencia de al menos una de las cinco especies. Evaluamos 490 parcelas de 3600 m2 distribuidas en 43 localidades y para cada especie describimos los bosques en mejor estado de conservación que de manera tentativa podrían usarse como referencia para determinar metas de conservación y en trabajos de restauración. En tres de las cinco especies encontramos evidencias de fuego en más de 60% de las parcelas visitadas. Muchas localidades presentaban suelos con evidencias de erosión y escasa cobertura de vegetación, así como una baja cobertura y complejidad estructural de bosque. Consideramos que Argentina ofrece buenas oportunidades para la conservación y restauración de estos bosques ya que aún quedan grandes extensiones, numerosos relictos, y en muchas áreas la presión antrópica ha disminuido. Es prioritario reducir los fuegos, establecer más y mejores áreas protegidas y, en particular en el noroeste Argentino, tener un mejor conocimiento de la ecología de cada especie y desarrollar métodos para restaurar sus bosques.</text>

                <text>El género Polylepis pertenece a la familia Rosaceae e incluye arbustos y árboles que crecen en las altas montañas de Los Andes y de las Sierras Grandes de Córdoba. En su mayoría, forma bosques cuya canopia es dominada por una especie del género Polylepis. Se caracteriza por tener una corteza con muchas láminas color rojizo, ramas retorcidas, hojas pequeñas compuestas y ﬂores inconspicuas, y por crecer —por necesidad o aptitud de hábitat— mayormente en quebradas rocosas. En términos evolutivos, es probable que se haya generado a partir del género Acaena por poliploidía. Los bosques de Polylepis proveen servicios ambientales y socioeconómicos de gran valor, como la protección de fuentes de agua, el control de la erosión y la regulación del microclima y del hábitat para numerosas especies. Los árboles de Polylepis poseen importancia económica para las comunidades campesinas. En este número especial presentamos algunos de los últimos avances en el estudio de los bosques de Polylepis. Muchos de los trabajos fueron presentados durante el último Congreso de Ecología y Conservación de Polylepis que se realizó en Jujuy, Argentina, en el año 2016. Esperamos que el próximo congreso, que tendrá lugar en Ecuador, cuente con un número creciente de estudios y participantes.</text>

                <text>Los bosques de Polylepis, endémicos de las montañas de Sudamérica, suelen estar asociados con sitios relativamente inaccesibles como quebradas, roquedales o laderas empinadas. Las hipótesis más discutidas que explican esta asociación son: 1) factores abióticos como la humedad, la temperatura o el viento, ó 2) factores antropogénicos como la protección del ramoneo por ganado doméstico, la tala o los fuegos iniciados por el ser humano. Para resumir el estado de avance en el conocimiento, realizamos una revisión cuantitativa sobre los estudios de ecología y conservación de bosques de Polylepis a lo largo de toda su distribución. Identificamos 139 publicaciones relevantes, de las que el 36% estuvo concentrado en la Argentina. Las publicaciones incluyen 20 de las ~27 especies existentes, de las cuales las más estudiadas son P. australis y P. tarapacana, con 45 y 21 publicaciones, respectivamente. En el otro extremo, hay 7 especies no representadas en publicaciones. Las disciplinas más populares fueron la ecología de poblaciones (35%) y los estudios sobre biodiversidad y comunidades (18%). Muy pocos estudios se repiten de una región a la otra. Los estudios que intentan comprender la contribución relativa de factores abióticos vs. antropogénicos para explicar la asociación de los bosques con lugares relativamente inaccesibles señalan una contribución mayor de los factores antrópicos, aunque todos están concentrados en el extremo sur de la distribución de Polylepis en la Argentina. Sugerimos áreas de vacancia en estudios y posibles mejoras en la producción de nuevas publicaciones y en la red de interacciones entre investigadores interesados en los ecosistemas de Polylepis.</text>

                <text>El presente artículo parte del contexto general de la gestión del riesgo de desastres y los procesos de generación de resiliencia, los cuales son analizados como fenómenos de construcción social a partir de la perspectiva analítica de las redes de gobernanza interactiva, teniendo como objeto empírico de la investigación el Sistema Distrital de Gestión de Riesgos y Cambio Climático de la ciudad de Bogotá. Por medio de la metodología del Análisis de Redes Sociales (ars) se analiza cómo, en este sistema sociopolítico, intervienen el carácter de complejidad, diversidad y dinamismo de las relaciones sociales, las cuales generan una gobernanza interactiva que permite involucrar diferentes tipos de actores, logrando reducir el riesgo y la vulnerabilidad ante la incertidumbre ligada a diferentes tipos de amenazas. Al final, se concluye que la generación de arreglos institucionales y la voluntad política en generar acuerdos de cooperación y participación de los diferentes actores sociales, junto con la percepción social del riesgo, son factores importantes que influyen en la construcción social de la resiliencia en ciudades.</text>
