To limit the transmission of the virus, the Italian Government imposed strict domestic quarantine policies and temporary closure of non-essential businesses and schools from March 10th,2020. Although more and more literature is exploring the impact of the pandemic on non-referred children and families, only a few studies are focused on the psychosocial impact of Covid-19 in chronically ill children and their caregivers. The present study investigates asthma control and children and mothers’ psychological functioning (i.e.: psychological well-being, fear of contagion, and mothers’ Covid-19 related fears) in 45 asthmatic children aged 7-to-14, compared to a control sample. The subjects were administered an online survey after the lockdown (from 28th May to 23rd August 2020). The analysis shows that asthmatic children presented higher concern in relation to contagion, however, no difference in psychological functioning was displayed between the two cohorts. Mothers reported more Covid-19 related fears, and greater worries according to the resumption of their children’s activities. Moreover, they indicated a global worsening of their psychological well-being during the lockdown. Furthermore, regarding the clinical sample, the multivariate regression model showed that a worsening of mothers' psychological and children’s physical well-being was associated with a worsening of children’s psychological well-being during the lockdown. The results of this study indicate that mothers of asthmatic children can be more prone to experience psychological fatigue in a pandemic scenario. Special programs should be developed to support caregivers of chronically ill children. Este estudo busca preencher a lacuna existente nos estudos relativos à relação entre identidade,alimentação e desenvolvimento entre grupos oriundos de imigrantes no Brasil, especificamente do Médio Vale do Itajaí. Para tanto, partimos do arcabouço da Antropologia da Alimentação e do método etnográfico com oito entrevistas em profundidade, além de pesquisas de campo, para obter informações relevantes ao estudo sobre a Cuca (Kuchen). Observamos que a Cuca (Kuchen) resultou de um sistema alimentar que foi constituído pelos imigrantes teutos na região, tendo se tornado ao longo do tempo um elemento essencial de sua identidade no terrirório e fez parte do desenvolvimento da região, acompanhando suas transformações. ABSTRACT This article presents results of an investigation in the Middle of Itajaí (Santa Catarina state, Brazil), whose objective was to analyze the Cuca (Kuchen) as an emblematic element of the identification of the inhabitants and the relation with the local development. We understand that Cuca (Kuchen) has a position as an emblematic element within the food system in the Middle Itajaí Valley because it is frequently present at the table of its residents, being related to local identity, it is important product of the ethnic trade (directly linked to the maintenance of agriculture familiar) and has recently been perceived as “typical” food, capable of being attractive to local gastronomic tourism. Marrocco-Trischitta, Giovanni Nano Description An account of the resource Introduction: Aim of the study is to assess the occurrence of early stage coagulopathy and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in patients with mild to moderate respiratory distress secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Materials and methods: Data of patients hospitalized from 18 March 2020 to 20 April 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Two scores for the screening of coagulopathy (SIC and non-overt DIC scores) were calculated. The occurrence of thrombotic complication, death, and worsening respiratory function requiring non-invasive ventilation (NIV) or admission to ICU were recorded, and these outcomes were correlated with the results of each score. Chi-square test, receiver-operating characteristic curve, and logistic regression analysis were used as appropriate. p Values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Data of 32 patients were analyzed. Overt-DIC was diagnosed in two patients (6.2%), while 26 (81.2%) met the criteria for non-overt DIC. Non-overt DIC score values ≥4 significantly correlated with the need of NIV/ICU (p = 0.02) and with the occurrence of thrombotic complications (p = 0.04). A score ≥4 was the optimal cut-off value, performing better than SIC score (p = 0.0018). Values ≥4 in patients with thrombotic complications were predictive of death (p = 0.03). Conclusions: Overt DIC occurred in 6.2% of non-ICU patients hospitalized for a mild to moderate COVID-19 respiratory distress, while 81.2% fulfilled the criteria for non-overt DIC. The non-overt DIC score performed better than the SIC score in predicting the need of NIV/ICU and the occurrence of thrombotic complications, as well as in predicting mortality in patients with thrombotic complications, with a score ≥4 being detected as the optimal cut-off. A Fazenda 1 possui um plantel de 273 animais e a Fazenda 2 possui 450 animais. O estudo foi realizado em 11 animais (bezerras) de um a três meses de idade. Estes animais foram submetidos à necropsia, e amostras de tecido dos órgãos afetados foram coletados para realização de exames histopatológicos e cultivo microbiológico, além de coleta de sangue para exames sorológicos. O objetivo do estudo foi à identificação das principais causas de morte em bezerras do gado leiteiro da região Bragantina, onde foi possível avaliar e identificar as possíveis causas de óbitos. Dentre essas causas de mortes, as enterites apresentaram clinicamente uma freqüência similar, as doenças respiratórias. Conclui-se que ao ser avaliado as amostras anatomopatológicas identificaram-se uma freqüência maior de lesões macroscópicas e microscópicas pulmonares do que de lesões intestinais. Müller Description An account of the resource SARS-coronavirus (CoV) is a zoonotic agent derived from rhinolophid bats, in which a plethora of SARS-related, conspecific viral lineages exist. Whereas the variability of virulence among reservoir-borne viruses is unknown, it is generally assumed that the emergence of epidemic viruses from animal reservoirs requires human adaptation. To understand the influence of a viral factor in relation to interspecies spillover, we studied the papain-like protease (PLP) of SARS-CoV. This key enzyme drives the early stages of infection as it cleaves the viral polyprotein, deubiquitinates viral and cellular proteins, and antagonizes the interferon (IFN) response. We identified a bat SARS-CoV PLP, which shared 86% amino acid identity with SARS-CoV PLP, and used reverse genetics to insert it into the SARS-CoV genome. The resulting virus replicated like SARS-CoV in Vero cells but was suppressed in IFN competent MA-104 (3.7-fold), Calu-3 (2.6-fold) and human airway epithelial cells (10.3-fold). Using ectopically-expressed PLP variants as well as full SARS-CoV infectious clones chimerized for PLP, we found that a protease-independent, anti-IFN function exists in SARS-CoV, but not in a SARS-related, bat-borne virus. This PLP-mediated anti-IFN difference was seen in primate, human as well as bat cells, thus independent of the host context. The results of this study revealed that coronavirus PLP confers a variable virulence trait among members of the species SARS-CoV, and that a SARS-CoV lineage with virulent PLPs may have pre-existed in the reservoir before onset of the epidemic.
