However, to realize this bio-medical potential, a high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) map is required in order to accomplish disease and phenotype association discovery. Description To remedy this, we generated 3,178,297 paired fosmid-end Sanger sequence reads from seven cats, and combined these data with the publicly available 2X cat whole genome sequence. All sequence reads were assembled together to form a 3X whole genome assembly allowing the discovery of over three million SNPs. To reduce potential false positive SNPs due to the low coverage assembly, a low upper-limit was placed on sequence coverage and a high lower-limit on the quality of the discrepant bases at a potential variant site. In all domestic cats of different breeds: female Abyssinian, female American shorthair, male Cornish Rex, female European Burmese, female Persian, female Siamese, a male Ragdoll and a female African wildcat were sequenced lightly. We report a total of 964 k common SNPs suitable for a domestic cat SNP genotyping array and an additional 900 k SNPs detected between African wildcat and domestic cats breeds. An empirical sampling of 94 discovered SNPs were tested in the sequenced cats resulting in a SNP validation rate of 99%. Conclusions These data provide a large collection of mapped feline SNPs across the cat genome that will allow for the development of SNP genotyping platforms for mapping feline diseases. Human coronavirus (hCoV) NL63 is associated with up to 10% of common colds. Viral plaque assays enable the characterization of virus infectivity and allow for purifying virus stock solutions. They are essential for drug screening. Hitherto used cell cultures for hCoV-NL63 show low levels of virus replication and weak and diffuse cytopathogenic effects. It has not yet been possible to establish practicable plaque assays for this important human pathogen. Results 12 different cell cultures were tested for susceptibility to hCoV-NL63 infection. Human colon carcinoma cells (CaCo-2) replicated virus more than 100 fold more efficiently than commonly used African green monkey kidney cells (LLC-MK2). CaCo-2 cells showed cytopathogenic effects 4 days post infection. Avicel, agarose and carboxymethyl-cellulose overlays proved suitable for plaque assays. Best results were achieved with Avicel, which produced large and clear plaques from the 4th day of infection. The utility of plaque assays with agrose overlay was demonstrated for purifying virus, thereby increasing viral infectivity by 1 log 10 PFU/mL. Conclusion CaCo-2 cells support hCoV-NL63 better than LLC-MK2 cells and enable cytopathogenic plaque assays. Avicel overlay is favourable for plaque quantification, and agarose overlay is preferred for plaque purification. HCoV-NL63 virus stock of increased infectivity will be beneficial in antiviral screening, animal modelling of disease, and other experimental tasks. The objective of this work was to determine the centesimal composition of criollo corn cultivated in different regions of the State of Paraíba. The analytical determinations were conducted in the Laboratory of Physical-Chemical Analysis of Food belonging to the Federal University of Paraíba, Campus - III, Bananeiras, Paraiba. The seeds of the Jaboatão Creole maize came from the family farmers of six municipalities located between the swamp and the semi-arid Paraiba. After the seeds were harvested, the selection and subsequent milling of the Willey-type knife of the samples were performed in the laboratory for the analysis. The analyzes of protein, lipid, ashes, moisture and carbohydrates were conducted at the Physical Chemistry Laboratory of Foods to analyze the centesimal composition of the Jaboatão Creole maize. A completely randomized design was used, with eight treatments (six collection municipalities) and three replications. The results obtained for the protein and ash analyzes in Jaboatão Creole maize had higher levels in samples obtained from the city of Alagoa Nova, where they presented with lower percentage of moisture in the evaluated material. For lipids the maize obtained from the municipality of Massaranduba 1 was higher, and the samples from the municipality of Remígio 2 had a better percentage of carbohydrate when compared to the other municipalities analyzed. The Jaboatão maize variety cultivated by family farmers has nutritional potential to be used as a food source. The human PSMA protein was immobilized as a target followed by incubation with a 15-mer phage display random peptide library. After one round of prescreening and two rounds of screening, high-stringency screening at the third round of panning was performed to identify the highest affinity binders. Phages which had a specific binding activity to PSMA in human prostate cancer cells were isolated and the DNA corresponding to the 15-mers were sequenced to provide three consensus sequences: GDHSPFT, SHFSVGS and EVPRLSLLAVFL as well as other sequences that did not display consensus. Two of the peptide sequences deduced from DNA sequencing of binding phages, SHSFSVGSGDHSPFT and GRFLTGGTGRLLRIS were labeled with 5-carboxyfluorescein and shown to bind and co-internalize with PSMA on human prostate cancer cells by fluorescence microscopy. The high stringency requirements yielded peptides with affinities KD~1 µM or greater which are suitable starting points for affinity maturation. While these values were less than anticipated, the high stringency did yield peptide sequences that apparently bound to different surfaces on PSMA. These peptide sequences could be the basis for further development of peptides for prostate cancer tumor imaging and therapy. Se realizaron muestreos de acuerdo a la técnica de colecta directa sobre la vegetación. Los insectos colectados fueron conservados en alcohol al 70 % y luego se procedió a su identificación. Se determinó la riqueza específica, la abundancia relativa y la frecuencia de aparición de todas las categorías taxonómica. Se registraron 1981 ejemplares pertenecientes a siete órdenes, 24 familias y 37 especies. Los órdenes más representados fueron Hymenoptera, Coleoptera y Hemiptera. El cultivo de zanahoria fue el de menor diversidad de insectos y el de acelga fue el de mayor, siendo la mayoría insectos fitófagos. La diversidad alfa manifestó una tendencia a la baja en época poco lluviosa.
