Recently reported success of DL techniques in crowd-sourced QSAR and predictive toxicology competitions has showcased these methods as powerful tools in drug-discovery and toxicology research. The aim of this work was dual, first large number of hyper-parameter configurations were explored to investigate how they affect the performance of DNNs and could act as starting points when tuning DNNs and second their performance was compared to popular methods widely employed in the field of cheminformatics namely Naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor, random forest and support vector machines. Moreover, robustness of machine learning methods to different levels of artificially introduced noise was assessed. The open-source Caffe deep-learning framework and modern NVidia GPU units were utilized to carry out this study, allowing large number of DNN configurations to be explored. Results We show that feed-forward deep neural networks are capable of achieving strong classification performance and outperform shallow methods across diverse activity classes when optimized. A lo largo de su historia evolutiva se evidenciaron varios episodios de poliploidía que impactaron en sus procesos de especiación. Las estructuras celulares como el polen y células oclusivas se encuentran muy influenciadas por la cantidad de genes presentes en cada especie, por lo que representa un método indirecto para determinar el grado de ploidía. En este estudio se analizó la relación del tamaño del grano de polen y la longitud de las células oclusivas con el tamaño del genoma y el número cromosómico, además de la viabilidad polínica de Polylepis incana, P. pauta, P. microphylla, P. racemosa y P. sericea recolectadas en los páramos andinos del Ecuador. Se fotografiaron granos de polen y estomas con un aumento de 400X y se midió su longitud en micrómetros con el programa ImageJ 1.49v. Para determinar la viabilidad del polen se utilizó una técnica de tinción. Los resultados muestran que existe una correlación positiva que varía de R2=0.32 a R2=0.65 entre las variables empleadas, según la especie, por lo cual sirven para analizar indirectamente la poliploidía. Estos datos son relevantes para el manejo y la conservación de Polylepis en Ecuador, ya que permiten identificar de antemano, rápida y económicamente potenciales citotipos e individuos híbridos a lo largo de los Andes ecuatorianos. Además, abre la posibilidad tanto de utilizar estos datos en estudios de cambio climático como para determinar parentales en proyectos de reforestación y restauración. Hoy en día los modelos de circulación general (MCG) de la atmósfera son la principal herramienta para estudiar los cambios climáticos. El Ministerio del Ambiente y de los Recursos Naturales (MARN) lideró en el año 2005 la Primera Comunicación Nacional en Cambio Climático de Venezuela, utilizando salidas de 16 MCGs a escala global (resolución de 5circ°imes 5circ), cuyas proyecciones estiman incrementos para la temperatura y disminución en la precipitación para los próximos años. Cada MCG arroja diferentes resultados generando incertidumbre en la señal del cambio climático futuro. Este trabajo utiliza un enfoque Bayesiano y una extensión del método Reliability Ensemble Average (REA) (Tebaldi et al. 2005), combinando las salidas (presente y futura) de precipitación y temperatura de los 16 MCG con observaciones de las condiciones climáticas actuales, con el fin de determinar las distribuciones de probabilidad del cambio climático futuro para estas dos variables climáticas en nueve regiones de Venezuela. Para el estudio se toman en cuenta dos criterios: sesgo, el cual considera la diferencia entre las salidas de los modelos y el clima actual, y convergencia, que cuantifica las diferencias en los cambios simulados por los múltiples modelos del clima futuro. El principal resultado obtenido del trabajo es que aún existe considerable incertidumbre en las proyecciones de los MCG, ya que estos no incluyen todos los aspectos sobre el funcionamiento del sistema climático. También se pudo establecer que mientras menor sea la variabilidad natural de la variable climática, más efectiva será su proyección.The changing climate is one of the main environmental problems facing humanity, since slight variations in the climate variables might have terrible consequences in the economic activities and human well-being. Nowadays atmospheric Global Circulation Models (GCMs) are the main tools to study changing climate. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR) led in 2005 the First Communication in Climate Change of Venezuela, using the outputs of 16 GCMs at a global scale (resolution of 5circ imes 5circ) whose projections estimate increasing temperature and diminishing precipitation in the coming years. Each GCM gives different results, generating uncertainty in the future changing climate signal. This work uses a Bayesian approach and an extension of the Reliability Ensemble Average (REA) (Tebaldi et al. 2005) method, combining the outputs (present and future) of precipitation and temperature of the 16 GCMs with observations of present climate conditions, to determine the probability distributions of future changing climate change for these two climate variables in 9 regions in Venezuela. For this study, two criteria are used: bias, which considers the difference between the model outputs and the present climate; and convergence, which quantifies the differences among the simulated changes of future climate by multiple models. The main result of this work is that a large amount of uncertainty still exists in the GCMs projections, since they as yet do not include all aspects of the climate system functioning. It was also concluded that the lower the natural variability in the climate variable, the more effective is its projection. Las cepas MF1b y MF5, en forma individual y en consorcio, se inocularon en semillas de maíz (HIMECA-95), y se sembraron bajo las siguientes condiciones de fertilización química: K, NK, PK, RK, NPK, y NRK (R: roca fosfórica). Al final del ensayo se determinó el peso seco total, y los contenidos de N y de P presentes en el grano para luego calcular el porcentaje de eficiencia agronómica relativa (%EAR). Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que la inoculación con la cepa MF5 en forma individual y en consorcio, con una fertilización quimica de NK, incrementaron la EAR del peso seco del grano en 130 y 403%, el contenido de N en 463  y 116%,  y el de P en 152 y 376%, respectivamente, logrando un aumento en la producción del grano de maíz y su calidad. Asimismo, se observó una variabilidad en las respuestas de los parámetros evaluados, lo cual podría deberse a los bajos contenidos de N y P del suelo, a los cambios en la fertilidad del suelo por la adición de los fertilizantes de alta solubilidad, y a la interacción entre las comunidades microbianas autóctonas y las bacterias introducidas. Se concluye que la efectividad de los microorganismos con potencial como biofertilizante para la agricultura sea evaluada cuidadosamente bajo diversas condiciones de fertilidad de los suelos.   Palabras clave: PGPR, fertilidad del suelo,bacterias diazotróficas, consorcio bacteriano, rendimiento   Abstract: Bacteria previously isolated, characterized as diazotrophic and inorganic phosphate solubilizers were evaluated under field conditions as plant growth promoters on the maize production when soil fertility was changed. The strains MF1b and MF5, alone and in consortium, were inoculated on maize seeds (HIMECA-95), and these were sown under the following chemical fertility conditions: K, NK, PN, RK, NPK, and NRK (R: phosphate rock). Total dry weight, and N and P contents of the grain were determined at the end of the experiment; also, the % of relative agronomic efficiency (RAE) was calculated. Results showed that inoculation with the strain MF5 alone and in consortium, with the addition of NK fertilizer increased the % RAE in 130 and 403 for the dry weight, in 463 and 116 for the N content, and in 152 and 376 for the P content, respectively, allowing an increase in both production and grain quality. Moreover, it was observed variations among the evaluated parameters which could be related to the low N and P status of the soil, the soil fertility changes after the addition of the highly soluble chemical fertilizers, and the interaction between autochthonous microbial communities and the introduced bacteria. It is concluded that the affectivity of a potential microbial biofertilizer for agriculture should be carefully evaluated under different fertility conditions of soils.
