                <text>En el tramo del Río Segura entre el Azud de la Contraparada y la ciudad de Murcia existe un área en la que la dinámica fluvial generó pronunciados meandros y fértiles sotos que dieron lugar a tierras adecuadas para el cultivo de regadío. Sin embargo, las obras de encauzamiento promovidas por el Plan de Defensa contra Avenidas en la Cuenca del Segura (1987) generaron más de cuatro kilómetros de meandros cortados y aumentaron la desconexión de los sotos de inundación con el cauce. Este artículo tiene como objetivo identificar oportunidades que presenta el lugar que podrían ser parte de una estrategia eficaz frente a las consecuencias del Cambio Climático en la Región de Murcia. En cuanto a la metodología, fundamentalmente se analizaron estudios relativos a la historia fluvial de la zona, a las propiedades de regadíos mediterráneos tradicionales y a los efectos del Cambio Climático en la Región de Murcia. Así mismo, se realizó un estudio cartográfico que abarca el periodo 1809-2013 para entender el movimiento meándrico del río y las alteraciones generadas por la actividad humana. Los resultados muestran que la zona de estudio, donde se combina huerta, río y red de riego, presenta diversas oportunidades como la apertura de los antiguos meandros al actual cauce del río para acoger posibles avenidas o la potencial capacidad para generar biodiversidad. Los resultados invitan a considerar estos paisajes combinados como lugares estratégicos para contribuir a proyectos de restauración y a la mitigación y adaptación al Cambio Climático.</text>

                <text>This study investigates the potential value of, and provides a method for, the creation of flexible, digital, and asynchronous platforms to create student-centred materials for use in an online and/or blended learning environment. We made use of Thinglink to create a “virtual microscope” resource for geology and associated courses in higher education.  This is achieved through the dissemination of a simple learning resource comprising interactive imagery and audio.     The visual analysis of rocks under the microscope, termed thin-section petrography, is a fundamental component in geology programmes in higher education, with key skills which are transferable with other fields such as material science, biology, and forensic science. However, learning environments and activities in this field are often dictated by the requirement for access to microscope facilities and supplementary resources which are highly variable in their academic level, availability, design, and scale, ranging from traditional textbooks to online resources.     A resource was created which allows individuals to experience some of the aspects of petrographic microscopy in a digital manner. In particular, specific features of the materials observed and how microscopes work were included. The resource was disseminated to a population of learners and educators, who provided responses to a questionnaire. Responses were overwhelmingly positive and indicate considerable interest from learner and teacher alike. Critical areas for improvement include the need for clarity in the user interface and the inclusion of a recorded human voice rather than automated text narration. This study highlights the need for, and benefits of, interactive online learning resources in petrology and associated fields. This type of resource has positive implications for the flexibility, inclusivity, and accessibility of teaching materials. Such resources may prove particularly valuable when distance learning is unavoidable (e.g. the COVID-19 crisis) and/or hybrid, blended learning environments are being deployed. The method and platform used in this study are highly transferable to other subject areas (or other areas of the geosciences).</text>

                <text>Objective: To assess the association of maternal migration to Baja California, body mass index (BMI) status, children's perceived food insecurity, and childhood lifestyle behaviors with overweight (BMI &gt; 85% ile), obesity (BMI &gt; 95% ile) and abdominal obesity (Waist Circumference &gt; 90% ile). Methods: Convenience sampling methods were used to recruit a cross-sectional sample of 4th, 5th and 6th grade children and their parents at Tijuana and Tecate Public Schools. Children's and parents' weights and heights were measured. Children were considered to have migrant parents if parents were not born in Baja California. Results: One hundred and twenty-two children and their parents were recruited. The mean age of the children was 10.1 &amp;plusmn; 1.0 years. Forty nine per cent of children were overweight or obese. Children with obese parents (BMI &gt; 30) had greater odds of being obese, Odds Ratio (OR) 4.9 (95% Confidence Interval (CI), 1.2-19, p = 0.03). Children with migrant parents had greater odds of being obese, OR= 3.7 (95% CI, 1.6-8.3), p = 0.01) and of having abdominal obesity, OR = 3.2 (95% CI, 1.4-7.1, p = 0.01). Children from migrant parents have greater risk of higher consumption of potato chips, OR = 8.0 (95% CI, 2.1 -29.1, p = 0.01). Children from non-migrant parents had greater odds of being at risk of hunger. Conclusions: Parental obesity and migration are associated with increased risk of obesity among Mexican children. Children whose parents were born in Baja California have greater odds of being at risk of hunger. Further studies should evaluate the role of migration on risk for childhood obesity.Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre la inmigración materna a Baja California, el índice de masa corporal (IMC), la percepción de inseguridad alimentaria de los niños, y los estilos de vida y el sobrepeso, (BMI &gt; 85% ila), la obesidad (BMI &gt; 95% ila) y la obesidad abdominal (Circunferencia de Cintura &gt; 90% ila). Métodos: Se realizó una muestra por conveniencia, en la que se reclutaron niños de 4.º a 6.º grado de primaria y a sus padres, de escuelas públicas de Tijuana y Tecate. Se midió el peso y la estatura de los niños. Los padres que no nacieron en el estado de Baja California se consideraron inmigrantes. Resultados: Fueron reclutados 122 pares de padres y niños. La edad media de los niños fue de 10,1 &amp;plusmn; 1,0 años. Cuarenta y nueve por ciento de los niños presentaron sobrepeso u obesidad. Los niños con padres obesos (BMI &gt; 30) presentaron mayor riesgo de obesidad, Razón de Momios (RM) 4,9 (95% Intervalo de confianza (IC) 1,219, p = 0,03). Los niños con padres inmigrantes presentaron mayor riesgo de tener obesidad, RM = 3,7 (95% IC, 1,6-8,3, p = 0,01) y obesidad abdominal, RM = 3,2 (95% IC, 1,4-7,1, p = 0,01). Los niños con padres inmigrantes presentaron mayor riesgo de consumo de patatas fritas, RM = 8,0 (95% CI, 2,1-29,1, p = 0,01). Los niños de padres no inmigrantes presentaron mayor riesgo de hambre. Conclusiones: La obesidad paterna y la inmigración estuvieron asociadas con el aumento de obesidad infantil. Los niños de padres nacidos en Baja California presentaron mayor riesgo de hambre. Se requieren más estudios que valoren el papel de la inmigración sobre el riesgo de obesidad.</text>

                <text>Objetive: To assess the prevalence of risk of overweight, overweight, and the perception of hunger among Mexican children from Indian and migrant parents over the periods of 2001 and 2003 Method: A total of 1,200 and 1,452 children were measured to assess anthropometric status and their perception of hunger experience. Results: There was no difference between 2001 and 2003 in the total prevalence of risk of overweight and overweight in either boys or girls. The prevalence of abdominal obesity is higher in the 2003 group than in the 2001 group among girls older than 9y (p &lt; 0.001). During 2003, the risk of hunger was higher (58%) than in 2001 (46%). Conclusion: The prevalence shown in our study is alarming since these children suffering from food insecurity have higher risk to develop obesity and diabetes during adulthood, particularly if they show rapid catchup fat after periods of economic recession.Objetivo: Valorar la prevalencia de riesgo de sobrepeso, de sobrepeso y de percepción de hambre en niños mexicanos hijos de padres migrantes indígenas durante el 2001 y 2003. Método: Durante 2001 y 2003, un total de 1.200 y 1.452 niños fueron medidos para valoración antropométrica y percepción de hambre. Resultados: No se observó diferencia significativa en la prevalencia de riesgo de sobrepeso y sobrepeso en niños y niñas durante los dos períodos. La prevalencia de obesidad abdominal fue superior en el grupo del 2003 y en las niñas mayores de nueve años (P &lt; 0,001). Durante 2003, el riesgo de hambre fue superior (58%), cuando se compara con 2001 (46%). Conclusión: La prevalencia presentada en este estudio es alarmante, ya que los niños que sufren inseguridad alimentaria (hambre) tienen mayor riego de desarrollar obesidad y diabetes en la etapa adulta, particularmente si presentan períodos de recuperación grasa posterior a una recesión económica.</text>

                <text>Hábitos de nidificación y alimentación de la ardilla gigante hindú (Ratufa indica) en el refugio de vida silvestre de Karlapat, India  La ardilla gigante hindú (Ratufa indica) es una de las cuatro  especies de ardilla gigante del mundo. Se trata de una especie endémica  de la India, pero sus poblaciones se encuentran muy fragmentadas. La  ecología de las ardillas en Asia se ha estudiado poco, lo que ha  entorpecido los esfuerzos de conservación y de gestión. Se estudiaron  los hábitos de nidificación y alimentación de la ardilla gigante hindú  durante la primavera en el refugio de vida silvestre de Karlapat, en la  India. Se inspeccionaron 122,5 km de senderos naturales para la  observación directa de estas ardillas, sus nidos e indicios de  alimentación, y se muestrearon varios cuadrantes para evaluar la  disponibilidad de recursos. Para analizar los datos sobre preferencias,  se emplearon los índices de la función de selección de recursos de Manly  y del logaritmo de la prueba de razón de verosimilitud. El promedio del  índice de encuentros de la ardilla gigante hindú fue de 0,57 (±  0,18   DE) individuos/km. Haldinia cordifolia (Wi  = 4,899; p &lt; 0,001) y Mangifera  indica (Wi  = 4,322; p = 0,001) fueron los árboles preferidos para la nidificación, mientras que Xylia xylocarpa (31,30%) y Bauhinia  vahlii (28,24%) fueron las plantas de las que se alimentaron en mayor medida.  La preferencia del sitio de nido fue por especies arbóreas más altas.  Como las actuales prácticas de gestión dañan directamente los sitios  preferidos de nidificación y los recursos alimentarios, con nuestras  conclusiones tratamos de promover la conservación eficaz de la ardilla  gigante hindú.</text>

                <text>Los Proterotheriidae han sido registrados desde el Paleoceno Superior hasta el Holoceno [«Edadesmamífero (= SALMAs) Itaboraiense-Lujanense]. Son mayoritariamente braquiodontes, cursoriales, de tamaño pequeño a mediano, que muestran una temprana tendencia hacia la monodactilia. Los objetivos del presente trabajo son: 1) analizar los cambios en la diversidad y las tasas de recambio de estos «ungulados» sudamericanos (tanto a nivel de especies como de géneros) a lo largo de todo su biocrón; y 2) vincular estos cambios con las principales variaciones en las condiciones climático-ambientales. Los resultados muestran que durante el lapso comprendido entre las SALMAs Itaboraiense-Lujanense, los Proterotheriidae sufren grandes cambios en la diversidad genérica y específica, con cuatro picos de diversidad (dos menores en las SALMAs Casamayorense y Laventense y dos mayores en las SALMAs Santacrucense y Huayqueriense). Estos picos están interrumpidos por dos hiatos en el registro fósil, en las SALMAs Divisaderense-Tinguiririquense y en la SALMA Mayoense, respectivamente). En líneas generales, los Proterotheriidae muestran durante su biocrón una elevada tasa de recambio tanto a nivel de géneros como de especies, razón por la cual esta familia puede ser considerada de gran valor biocronológico. Las fluctuaciones en la riqueza taxonómica y las tasas de recambio taxonómico guardan relación con los cambios climático-ambientales acaecidos durante el Cenozoico. Asimismo, la mayor diversidad se observa en aquellas SALMAs en las que hay una relación relativamente equilibrada entre bosques y pastizales, declinando marcadamente la diversidad a medida que los ambientes se tornan más abiertos y áridos. La última especie de Proterotheriidae (Neolicaphrium recens) queda restringida al NE de la Argentina y al O de Uruguay, donde es registrado un ecotono entre bosques y pastizales.</text>

                <text>Este artículo examina la evolución y el impacto de las políticas macroeconómicas y de promoción del riego (con énfasis en la zona montañosa semiárida) que se han implementado en Chile a partir de 1973 hasta la actualidad. La política macroeconómica liberal con un sesgo pro exportador ha resultado en una fuerte expansión de la frontera agrícola y una consecuente mayor demanda de agua. Por su parte, la política de promoción del riego en los valles de la zona montañosa semiárida, a pesar de haberse iniciado temprano durante el siglo XX con la construcción del primero de tres grandes embalses, ha contribuido fuertemente a la expansión de la tecnificación del riego como asimismo al aumento de la superficie plantada. Ello a través de cambios institucionales y legales, como también debido a la inversión pública directa en obras de infraestructura, y a la aplicación de una batería de instrumentos económicos (subsidios). Sin embargo, modelos de cambio climático indican que hacia fines del siglo XXI la situación en esta zona geográfica puede ser completamente diferente a lo que conocemos en al actualidad. Menor precipitación y menor acumulación de nieve en las altas cumbres de la Cordillera de Los Andes disminuirán la oferta de agua para riego, lo que generaría una situación extremadamente compleja. La zona semiárida es en la actualidad altamente vulnerable a las variaciones interanuales del clima ya que seis de cada diez años reciben precipitación por debajo de lo normal. Ello hace necesario diseñar e implementar nuevas políticas públicas que contribuyan a la adaptación de los sistemas agrícolas a este nuevo escenario más restrictivo.</text>

                <text>Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many changes to clinical practice, including the introduction of remote clinics. Those familiar with remote clinics have reported benefits to their use, such as patient satisfaction and cost benefits; however, ongoing challenges exist, including delivering optimal patient-centred care. As a tertiary paediatric surgery unit in the UK, completing remote clinics was a new experience for most of our surgical team. We completed a service evaluation early into the COVID-19 pandemic aiming to define and address issues when delivering remote clinics in paediatric surgery. Remote clinics were observed (telephone and video), with follow-up calls to families following the consultations. Results Eight paediatric surgeons were observed during their remote clinics (telephone n = 6, video n = 2). Surgeons new to remote clinics felt their consultations took longer and were reluctant to discharge patients. The calls did not always occur at the appointed time, causing some upset by parents. Prescription provision and outpatient investigations led to some uncertainty within the surgical team. Families (n = 11) were called following their child’s appointment to determine how our remote clinics could be optimised. The parents all liked remote clinics, either as an intermediate until a face-to-face consultation or for continued care if appropriate. Our findings, combined by discussions with relevant managers and departments, led to the introduction of recommendations for the surgical team. An information sheet was introduced for the families attending remote clinics, which encouraged them to take notes before and during their consultations. Conclusions There must be strong support from management and appropriate departments for successful integration of remote clinics. Surgical trainees and their training should be considered when implementing remote clinics. Our learning from the pandemic may support those considering integrating remote clinics in the future.</text>
