                <text>The rapidly evolving pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection worldwide cost many lives. The angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) has been identified as the receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 viral entry. As such, it is now receiving renewed attention as a potential target for anti-viral therapeutics. We review the physiological functions of ACE2 in the cardiovascular system and the lungs, and how the activation of ACE2/MAS/G protein coupled receptor contributes in reducing acute injury and inhibiting fibrogenesis of the lungs and protecting the cardiovascular system. In this perspective, we predominantly focus on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on ACE2 and dysregulation of the protective effect of ACE2/MAS/G protein pathway vs. the deleterious effect of Renin/Angiotensin/Aldosterone. We discuss the potential effect of invasion of SARS-CoV-2 on the function of ACE2 and the loss of the protective effect of the ACE2/MAS pathway in alveolar epithelial cells and how this may amplify systemic deleterious effect of renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAS) in the host. Furthermore, we speculate the potential of exploiting the modulation of ACE2/MAS pathway as a natural protection of lung injury by modulation of ACE2/MAS axis or by developing targeted drugs to inhibit proteases required for viral entry.</text>

                <text>Recently, the SARS-CoV-2 induced disease COVID-19 has spread all over the world. Nearly 20% of the patients have severe or critical conditions. SARS-CoV-2 exploits ACE2 for host cell entry. ACE2 plays an essential role in the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), which regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. ACE2 also protects organs from inflammatory injuries and regulates intestinal functions. ACE2 can be shed by two proteases, ADAM17 and TMPRSS2. TMPRSS2-cleaved ACE2 allows SARS-CoV-2 cell entry, whereas ADAM17-cleaved ACE2 offers protection to organs. SARS-CoV-2 infection-caused ACE2 dysfunction worsens COVID-19 and could initiate multi-organ failure. Here, we will explain the role of ACE2 in the pathogenesis of severe and critical conditions of COVID-19 and discuss auspicious strategies for controlling the disease.</text>

                <text>Debido a la preocupación mundial que se tiene sobre el calentamiento global por la producción de gases de efecto invernadero y el impacto que tiene el metano producido por el sector agropecuario, se han usa do antibióticos como mitigantes de la producción de metano; sin embargo estos han sido prohibidos en Europa desde enero de 2006 y se espera que en los próximos años sea impedido en otros continentes. Esta pro hibición generó la investigación de compuestos alternativos sintéticos o naturales con capacidad antimicrobia na que no generen resistencia en los microorganismos pero que ejerzan efectos similares a los antibióticos. Se han evaluado nitrocomponentes, taninos, saponinas, y recientemente otros componentes secundarios de las plantas como los aceites esenciales (AE). Existe una gran cantidad de AE sin embargo; sólo han sido evaluados en promedio 70 de estos, y sus componentes activos, a los que se les atribuye la modificación de la fermentación ruminal o mitigante de metano. La mayoría de los trabajos que mencionan efectos en la fermentación ruminal y mitigación del metano se han realizado in vitro , en algunos casos con resultados importantes, y recientemente se han comenzado a generar datos de investigaciones in vivo con la inclusión de la evaluación de parámetros productivos y de salud animal.                 <text>Colombia, como primer exportador mundial de café suave, en el año 2008 produjo un promedio de 12 524 sacos de café, cada uno de 60 kg, de los cuales 3 005 toneladas corresponden a pulpa del café; estos grandes volúmenes producidos post-cosecha, son considerados contaminantes. Un uso de estos subproductos es la elaboración de abono orgánico. El proceso de compostaje tradicional tarda cerca de 150 días; por ésto se plantea disminuir el tiempo a 40 días. Se realizó el aislamiento de microorganismos a partir de un pre-enriquecimiento de la pulpa o cereza en un medio basal salino hasta obtener cultivos axénicos. Se identificaron y realizaron pruebas de compatibilidad entre cepas para seleccionar los consorcios a ensayar. Cuatro biopilas fueron elaboradas con un peso de 175 Kg cada una y una testigo. Se inocularon por aspersión con una concentración de 3 x 107 UFC/mL durante 10, 20 y 30 días, con el monitoreo de parámetros físicos. Fueron aisladas e identificadas 8 cepas: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Citrobacter koseri, Bacillus spp., Escherichia coli, Stenotrophomona maltophilia, Cromobacterium spp., Pseudomonas spp. Las relaciones carbono-nitrógeno (C/N) en la pila 1 (9,6 %), en la pila 2 (10 %) y en la pila 4 (9,5 %), cumplieron con los valores establecidos (&lt; 20 %), lo que demuestra madurez y calidad sanitaria con valores bajos de coliformes fecales y totales, con ausencia de Salmonella. Se obtuvo en 40 días un compost que cumple con los parámetros exigidos por la norma técnica Colombiana (NTC 5167, 2004).</text>

                <text>La Biotecnología ambiental trata de corregir los desequilibrios causados en el medio ambiente por actividades industriales que alteran los ecosistemas naturales mediante contaminación química o biológica y que también afectan a los grandes ciclos biogeoquímicos en la biosfera, mayoritariamente catalizados por seres vivos, entre los que los microrganismos juegan un papel esencial. Las desviaciones en los balances de compuestos carbonados, nitrogenados y azufrados atmosféricos pueden causar fenómenos de gran complejidad como el calentamiento global, la destrucción de la capa de ozono, la contaminación ambiental o la lluvia ácida. Por otra parte, las interacciones de los microorganismos entre sí y con el medio, desconocidas en su mayor parte, tiene importantes repercusiones en la generación y persistencia de especies químicas que, depositadas en las cadenas tróficas, son altamente tóxicas para los organismos vivos. Para atajar estos problemas es necesario avanzar en el conocimiento a nivel molecular de la ecología microbiana y del funcionamiento de los ciclos biogeoquímicos, aunque no es menos necesario desarrollar tecnologías para la eliminación de contaminantes industriales in situ y ex situ, evitar su producción y utilización incontroladas así como corregir las actuaciones desequilibrantes, actuales o futuras, de la biogeoquímica planetaria.</text>

                <text>Resumo Crédito rural e assistência técnica são importantes instrumentos de estímulo à agropecuária. Mas de que maneira eles têm sido utilizados pela agricultura familiar, que engloba quase 80% dos estabelecimentos agropecuários brasileiros? O presente artigo, usando microdados da PNAD de 2014, analisa o acesso de Pessoas Potencialmente Classificadas como Agricultor Familiar (PPCAF) a programas de crédito e assistência técnica e extensão rural (ATER), diagnosticando possíveis diferenças pessoais e regionais neste acesso. A análise tabular e via o modelo lógite sobre as PPCAF mostra que: (1) nordestinos são predominantes entre as PPCAF, mas não entre os contemplados no Pronaf e na ATER; (2) à medida que aumenta a faixa de rendimento domiciliar e a escolaridade das PPCAF, aumenta o acesso ao Pronaf e à ATER; (3) enquanto as PPCAF nordestinas e da região Norte fazem maior uso de ATER pública, as PPCAF do Sul e do Centro-Oeste fazem mais uso de ATER privada; (4) os modelos lógites indicam que há menor probabilidade do homem, do menos escolarizado e do nordestino ter acesso à ATER do que os seus contrários nesses requisitos. Constata-se, portanto, haver diferenças pessoais e regionais no acesso à ATER e que precisam ser mais bem tratadas por políticas econômicas.</text>
