Verificou-se que a metodologia de criação foi satisfatória e segura para manipulação em laboratório. Durante o desenvolvimento larval a lagarta apresentou seis ínstares e o ciclo biológico (ovo-adulto) foi de 139,5 dias. Foram analisadas 64 fontes no município de Arvoredo e 73 fontes no município de Saudades. Os indicadores considerados foram coliformes fecais e totais, nitrato, amônia, orto-fosfato e pH. Constatou-se a ocorrência de contaminação por coliformes fecais, oriundos dos dejetos animais, em 49,3% das fontes de Saudades e 73,4% das fontes de Arvoredo. Em 9,6% das fontes de Arvoredo e 4,9% das fontes de Saudades foram encontrados níveis de nitrato acima de 10mg/L. Em 46,3% das fontes de Arvoredo e 27% das fontes de Saudades foram encontrados níveis de orto-fosfato acima de 0,025mg/L, que é o valor máximo permitido (VMP), caracterizando este elemento como um bom indicador químico da poluição agrícola na região. Nas fontes protegidas, as alterações nos indicadores ocorreram em menor proporção, levando a concluir que a diferença de qualidade da água entre os municípios deve-se ao percentual de fontes protegidas de 51% em Saudades e 27% em Arvoredo.
