Conditions of emergency and reproduction of family production in agriculture are discussed, based on recent approaches, mainly suggesting the ability of small units to produce surviving strategies in conditions of capitalist market. As a result, is proposed an understanding of the small production as an integral part of the present phase of peripheral capitalism. Under this view, the recent expansion of vegetables production in 'brejos' is discussed, emphasising the resource use strategies, specially labour, both family and hired. Severe problems of market instability are analysed, with implications on the capacity to capitalise by the smallest producers. In consequence, the strengthen of the so called 'family complex' is observed, which combined with subsistence production contributes to support the permanency of the small farmers in the market.</text>
