              <text>Este artigo apresenta a avaliação de sustentabilidade de agroecossistemas fami- liares de produção de mandioca do município de Bom Jesus, no Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, na perspectiva do Marco de Avaliação de Sistemas de Manejo incorporando Indicadores de Sustentabilidade (Mesmis). Após a aplicação de 18 indicadores estratégicos simples, vieram à luz as diferenças de sustentabilidade entre agroecossistemas de produção de mandioca, no que tange às dimensões econômica, social e ambiental, comparando-se o sistema convencional (que pro- duz mandioca em monocultivo para comercialização usando agroquímicos) com o alternativo (que faz policultura preservando os recursos naturais e usa técnicas agroecológicas). Com base nos suportes teórico-metodológicos adotados, con- cluiu-se que a produção de mandioca do agroecossistema alternativo mostrou-se mais sustentável do que a do convencional, uma vez que o primeiro apresentou uma situação desejada de sustentabilidade, resultado da diversidade agropecuária e de princípios agroecológicos, enquanto o segundo deu prioridade ao aumento da produtividade ou ao crescimento econômico, negligenciando aspectos de sus- tentabilidade nas dimensões ambiental e social. </text>
