Descripción

Deregulation and privatization policies that took place in the last 50 years created negative conditions to family farmers all over Latin America. Interpretations over the factors that determinate their permanence in rural areas have been diverse and not always concordant. This work approached this subject in the northeastern region of Uruguay from the vision of institutional referents. Results show that their permanence depends on the combination of positive and negative factors related to culture, profitability, access to public policies and services and infrastructure. Then, it is possible to assume that policies aiming to support this sector should take into account other factors than only productivity issues.
