Esta terrible situación genera, entre otras muchas nefastas consecuencias, una incapacidad de aprender o estar atento en clase que desemboca en un círculo vicioso de hambre, pobreza y analfabetismo. Una forma de luchar contra el hambre es ligar los esfuerzos para su mitigación a la educación. En este artículo se muestra la propuesta hecha en el distrito (“chiefdom”) de Biriwa, en el norte de Sierra Leona, para disminuir las tasas de hambre crónica y analfabetismo infantil a través de un sistema de extensión agraria por el cual los alumnos desde niños aprenden a manejar pequeños huertos escolares. Estos les deben permitir comer en el colegio mejorando su rendimiento escolar y garantizando a largo plazo una mejor seguridad alimentaria para ellos y sus familias.
