              <text>A busca por sustentabilidade é crescente em diferentes meios, porém, é na substituição de combustíveis fosseis por combustíveis renováveis que se tem o maior enfoque. Encontrar culturas que se demonstrem altamente produtoras de óleo e que tenham alto rendimento é um dos grandes gargalos ao crescimento dos biocombustíveis. Esta revisão literária vem embasar futuras pesquisas a respeito de uma palmeira altamente produtiva e eficiente na produção de óleo, a macaúba. Esta palmeira apresenta uma produtividade média de frutos de 15000 kg ha-1 e rendimento médio em óleo de 4000 kg ha-1, bem superior ao rendimento das oleaginosas mais comumente utilizadas, com a soja, a mamona, o girassol, o algodão e o amendoim, que tendem a apresentar média de produtividade de 1000 kg ha-1. Desta forma, a macaúba apresenta todas as características para despontar na produção de biocombustível, pois é uma cultura de elevada sustentabilidade e de extrativismo familiar, além de, ser encontrada em praticamente todas as regiões do Brasil.</text>
