La presencia del dolor dentro de un proceso oncológico es variable y depende del tipo y de la extensión de la enfermedad, así como de la propia tolerancia individual de cada persona. El dolor oncológico terminal intenso es una circunstancia tan previsible como necesariamente evitable. Su alivio resulta prioritario en el programa mundial del cáncer de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Conocer la clasificación del dolor, las causas, las escalas de valoración, la manera en qué se puede describir, permite un tratamiento integral del dolor por cáncer, optimizar la atención integral del paciente con esta afección y mejorar su calidad de vida.
