              <text>Os ecossistemas crescem e desenvolvem-se dentro das restrições termodinâmicas. Uma das formas de se medir o estágio de amadurecimento de um ecossistema é avaliar suas propriedades emergentes, que apesar de não realizarem trabalho no sentido físico, influenciam seu desenvolvimento. Essas propriedades podem ser quantificadas em funções-meta que servem como indicadoras da qualidade do ecossistema. Neste trabalho, são detalhadas, em vários aspectos, duas funções-meta: ascendência e “overhead”. Ambas são baseadas na Teoria de Informação, sendo que a primeira delas reflete o grau de ordem do sistema e a segunda o de desordem. Apesar dos sistemas tenderem à maior organização, um nível de desordem é imprescindível para manter essa mesma ordem. As funções são descritas matematicamente e, através de um exemplo hipotético, os seus cálculos são realizados de forma que possam ser refeitos por interessados no assunto.Ecosystems grow and develop subjected to thermodynamic constraints. Emergent properties can measure the ecosystem maturity. These properties do not do causal work but they influence the system development and they can be shown as goal functions that indicate the health of ecosystems. In this paper, two goal functions are detailed: ascendency and overhead. The origin of them is the Information Theory. Ascendency shows the degree of system order while overhead quantifies the disorder component. Although, systems tend to order increasing ascendency, a certain disorder degree is indispensable to sustain the order. Ascendency and overhead are described mathematically and the calculations are exemplified through a hypothetical ecosystem.</text>
