No Maranhão devido às suas características históricas de uso e ocupação do solo e de sua grande extensão territorial, há predomínio de atividades agrícolas com o uso predominante do sistema de corte e queima. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a dinâmica de focos de queimadas na Baixada Maranhense, local de potencial socioambiental complexo e que é vulnerável às queimadas. Os dados utilizados têm intervalo temporal de 2000 a 2013, sendo utilizados os seguintes dados: focos de queimadas do banco de dados do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), dados de precipitação do Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) e dados de altimetria provenientes do Banco de Dados Geomorfométricos do Brasil (TOPODATA). Os resultados obtidos evidenciam um padrão espacial em que os focos de queimadas ocorreram nos períodos de menor ocorrência de precipitação, e em áreas com maior influência antrópica. Outro fator importante observado foi a altimetria, pois locais mais baixos e sujeitos a alagamentos, mostraram-se menos suscetíveis às queimadas. DYNAMICS OF FIRES IN THE BAIXADA MARANHENSE ABSTRACT Burnings occur naturally and by influence of men; both having its negative impacts maximized by the effects of climate change. In the state of Maranhão (Brazil), due to its large territorial extension and land use occupation history, there are many agricultural activities widely using the “cut” and “burn” approach to clean the land. In the light of this evidence, the aim if this paper was to analyze the burning spots dynamics in Baixada Maranhense, a rich socio-environmental area vulnerable to burnings. The burning time series data interval adopted was from 2000-2013, obtained from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE); the precipitation data from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TOPODATA); and the altimetry data from Brazil Geomorfometric Database (TOPODATA). The results showed a spatial pattern where outbreaks of fire occurred mainly in periods with less precipitation and next to areas occupied by men. In respect to altimetry, we found that in lower altitudes (typically swamps or flooded areas) burnings were less likely to occur. Keywords: Flooded Plains; Droughts; Land and Soil Use Changes. DINÁMICA DE LOS INCENDIOS EN BAIXADA MARANHENSE RESUMEN Incendios se producen de forma natural y por la influencia humana, pueden tener sus impactos negativos maximizan los efectos del cambio climático. En el Maranhão, debido a sus características históricas de uso y ocupación del suelo y su amplio territorio, hay un predominio de las actividades agrícolas con el uso predominante del sistema de “tala” y “quema”. En este contexto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la dinámica de los incendios en el Baixada Maranhense, lugar de potencial social y ambiental complejo y que es vulnerable al fuego. Los datos utilizados son intervalo de tiempo desde 2000 hasta 2013, y se utilizan los siguientes datos: base de datos de incendios del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Espaciales (INPE), datos de precipitación de la Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) y datos de altimetría de la Banco de Dados Geomorfométricos del Brasil (TOPODATA). Los resultados muestran un patrón espacial, donde los incendios ocurren en períodos de lluvias más bajo, y en áreas con alta influencia humana. Otro factor importante observado fue la altimetría, para lugares expuestos a las inundaciones más bajo y, eran menos susceptibles a la quema.
