Desenvolvimento. Subdesenvolvimento. Economia. Dependência. Ecologia.     Abstract: This work aims at presenting the range and the limits of the dependence theory, fi rst outlined in 1970, as a means of analyzing the economic reality of the Latin American continent. The objective of the following article is to demonstrate that the dependence theory is closely related to the ideas behind the CEPAL’s development theory. In this sense, the range of the dependence theory, when compared to the development theory, is bound to the idea that the underdevelopment state of the Latin American continent is linked to the economic and political worlds. On the other hand, the limits of the dependence theory are based on the fact that it hasn’t accomplished its initial proposal, since its analysis of the Latin American reality was restricted to economical aspects. This work also assumes that the modern crisis occurs in all aspects of western living, as a result of economic rationality and of a one-dimensional development, which affects directly the Latin America region. Therefore, both the understanding of the reality that surrounds us and of its transformation require us to rethink the homogenization of the production and consumption standards present in the Latin American society, which are based on the western model of the central countries.
