<text>This paper presents the contributions of Karl W. Butzer and his team to establishing the role played by the Moriscos in the environmental history of the Mediterranean. The Moriscos are considered the last representatives of Arabic domination in Spain, but also an example of a rural community that had to deal with major inconveniences which, in certain areas such as the more mountainous regions, implied a series of environmental issues. Their presence, linked to the progressive cultural change that took place following the Christian conquest of the 13th Century, and the consequences of their expulsion in 1609, are analysed from a broad and critical perspective, which examines the relationship between man and his surroundings within the cyclical problem of the degradation of Mediterranean ecosystems.
