El ensayo se realizó en las instalaciones del invernadero de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Palmira. Los resultados demostraron que la melaza es un acelerador de la descomposición de los residuos de hoja de caña, pues muestra una marcada influencia en la tasa descomposición inicial de dichos residuos, pero una vez consumidos los carbohidratos que la constituyen, la tasa de descomposición se disminuye ostensiblemente. Se evidencia entonces el potencial de los residuos de hoja de caña como elementos para el mantenimiento y/o mejoramiento del capital biofísico en el sistema productivo de la caña, debido a su alta eficiencia fotosintética.
