RUSSIAN GEOPOLITICAL OBJECTIVES IN THE CURRENT OIL PRICE CRISIS AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR CANADA

The Russia-Saudi oil price war that devastated energy markets in March alsoilluminated the Kremlin’s thinking. It revealed Russia’s fears and just how farit’s prepared to go to prevent them from becoming reality, even at the cost ofwrecking promising alliances. In 2016, Russia and Saudi Arabia agreed to cooperate in managing oil prices through the OPEC+ agreement. Their partnershipdeepened to the extent that the Kremlin excused some of Saudi Arabia’s recentdirty deeds, while the Saudis began making overtures to draw the Russians awayfrom Iran in the Middle East.
